San Marino 0-13 Germany

Germany set a European Championship qualifying record after crushing San Marino 13-0 in the republic.
Striker Lukas Podolski scored four, while Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Thomas Hitzlsperger all found the net twice.

Michael Ballack, Manuel Friedrich and Bernd Schneider with a 90th-minute penalty also scored in the game, which Germany led 6-0 at the break.

Germany's Group D win bettered Spain's 12-1 victory over Malta in 1983.

The result was also the worst in San Marino's history - 14 years ago they lost 10-0 to Norway.

San Marino's population is just 27,000, though the game was watched by a crowd of just more than 5,000.

Germany top Group D, which includes Wales and the Republic of Ireland, on goal difference.

Joachim Loew's side have six points, the same as the Czech Republic, who beat neighbours Slovakia 3-0 in Bratislava.

England meanwhile, somewhat less impressive, beat Macedonia 1:0. France got revenge for the WC Final and beat Italy 3:1. And Australia managed to lose an Asian Cup Qualifier against Kuwait 2:0 (http://www.abc.net.au/sport/columns/200609/s1734869.htm?football).

So, do we have any favourites for the next few tournaments yet? Any new coaches that people particularly liked or disliked?

Oh my God, I hadn't even heard about the result until now, so this really made me laugh. 13:0. Lol. :p

It was... I dunno. Like taking candy from a baby? And Gerald is the only forward who didn't get to score. That's gotta hurt.

Whats this for Euro 08? I'll support anything in Eastern Europe plus Israel. :)

Yes, I was very disappointed with that result. :(

I was more disappointed with the performance than with the result. They really played like crap.

I'm afraid right now...without those players that did so well in the World Cup, it doesn't look like the Aussie team is all that good. I mean, the first round match in Sydney didn't exactly convince either.

Italy just got their arse handed to them, and Brazil's new coach didn't exactly have a dream debut...

I didn't watch the game this morning, but I agree with you about the Sydney one a couple of weeks ago. We got the win, but looked fairly disjointed doing so. I'm hoping that there will be more preparation & training before/when the squad actually goes to the Asian Cup.

Strange rule, that. Italy hadn't won for decades before this tournament, and Brazil crashed out in heroic fashion.
