It's the well-documented physical anamoly known as the Small World Effect.

SWE takes effect as a person becomes more used to a forum. They begin to tune out one-post lurkers and "Newbs" and the forums appear to shrink as their posting-generation "Grows up" into forum-royaltyhood and the forum-royalty they were used to passes into the great internet void.

I think you're right. It generally is the same people on NS. I don't really go in for NS roleplaying myself so I will just presume all the others have migrated there.

Well I think that NS is getting smaller. I had an old account (bobslovakia) and that was last year (sadly I quit for a while and my account was deleted:( ). Back then there were a lot more posts and the forum bar changed more quickly. I only post in general, but it seems like all of NS is shrinking. It's sad.

Schools started. All the summer noobs have disappeared. Don't worry, they'll come back for xmas hols :)

There weren't that many kids on it NS this summer, say compared with 2 years ago, the place was flooded with them. As for College students, I'm not back til the middle of October:(

There's a smaller "core" of posters these days, posters who have been around for a long time and post regularly. But I think there are more 'other' members...those who haven't been about so long and don't post as regularly. Probably about the same amount of posters in general, just different.

I think it depends. At my university I'll have a laptop and there's wireless Internet access across the entire campus so I can go on NSG if it's a slow day or if I'm working on my computer at the same time.

Needless to say, laptops are not allowed in lower levels of school...plus, a lot of employers don't like people browsing the Net while they're working.

Londim reporting for duty. But school as started :(. On the plus side most days I'lll finish by 1pm :). So I'll be around for a while. I need NSGahol!

I remember the days when General used to be 8 pages long, now it's 4-5 at the most. Threads are getting longer, mind.

And I've just noticed that NSG only has 4 pages of threads in the last day, which is lower than its usual 6/7.

Well it all started when I was young, except I cant remember what it was because my memory is blank. I was told some things like I was super cross-eyed and I would walk straight into poles and wall corners. I've also cracked my head open more times than I can count... and I can count up to eleventy.

It's because this forum is like the American political discourse. All the left wing whackos and right wing zealots shouting too loud and drowning out the majority of people in the middle.

Yeah, I think a lot of it is because of technical issues. Some people still can't get on at all, or only once every few weeks for a couple hours. And there are just a lot of times when jolt is completey fucked up and won't load at all or will take half an hour or longer to load.

That plus the fact that there are tons of new puppets lately, which dilutes the old General quality. It gets tiring trying to figure out which people are hiding behind a mask.

to an extent. there's always new blood coming, and oldies leaving - at the moment it does seem to be more going out than coming in, but i'm sure thats temporary. there was a huge influx of noobs about 2 months ago iirc but hardly any stayed, heh.

as a result the regulars are probably more prominent than perhaps as is usual and the place feels 'smaller' (not really to me but meh). the thing that gets me is the old regulars (many of whom i've seen as noobs) are now dangerously close to my postcount :eek: not that it means much, but i was quite proud of my 14k, and with so many reguars now getting to the 10k and above mark i can no longer feel in the least bit special :( :( (semi-serious point - i do mean it but i don't really care that much :p)

Yeah, I think a lot of it is because of technical issues. Some people still can't get on at all, or only once every few weeks for a couple hours. And there are just a lot of times when jolt is completey fucked up and won't load at all or will take half an hour or longer to load.

to an extent. there's always new blood coming, and oldies leaving - at the moment it does seem to be more going out than coming in, but i'm sure thats temporary. there was a huge influx of noobs about 2 months ago iirc but hardly any stayed, heh.

as a result the regulars are probably more prominent than perhaps as is usual and the place feels 'smaller' (not really to me but meh). the thing that gets me is the old regulars (many of whom i've seen as noobs) are now dangerously close to my postcount :eEk: not that it means much, but i was quite proud of my 14k, and with so many reguars now getting to the 10k and above mark i can no longer feel in the least bit special :( :( (semi-serious point - i do mean it but i don't really care that much :p)

It's true, many of the major players have gone on to bigger and better things. Or some sort of camp, in LaDame's case.

As for getting noticed, I've only been here since February but I think at least 50% of NS General recognizes my name at this point. Here's how I did it:


When I first signed up, I didn't find the forums for a while. When I did, I posted like CRAZY.
When I couldn't post a lot, I tried to do it at least 13 times a day.
Every so often I'd start a thread and then monitor it heavily, replying to almost all of the posts.
I got real involved in social threads, and got to know some of the major players. Private IM and Gabbly comes in handy for that, as does photo posting.
I somehow got on the "Hottest girl on NS" poll and came in 6th or 8th or something like that. That was purely a fluke, but luck is useful in that respect.
Finally, I recently hosted an area meetup. Only one person came, but luckily it was Laerod. He's great.
