Anyone who is currently on facebook noticed today that facebook has taken a huge turn towards becoming stalkbook. I am among many users who are pissed at the new "News Feed" which serves no other purpose than to aid stalkers.

I sent an e-mail to them and some douchebag named Pete, who is their Customer Affairs Rep, ignored all of the complaints. I've heard similar things from others who emailed facebook.

How's that for irony?

Dude, I totally agree. I mean, come on, if I want to stalk someone, all the information is right there the instant I log in. Seriously, make us work a LITTLE to discover the details of our targets', er, friends', personal lives. Jesus Christ, stalking has just totally lost its fun. :(

Heh. One of my friends did too.

Personally, I think it was stalkerbook before, and this just made it a tad easier.

It's a networking site for American college and HS students. (Mainly college though). It was better than the trashy myspace, but after today I think myspace might've become the better site.

It's basically a log of every action you undertake on the site (relationships, friendships, status updates, group memberships, notes, messages, photo uploads, etc., etc., etc.) and makes it publicly viewable.

That's it? Jeez... The changes are viewable on the website already. Now if NewsFeed told everyone where I live, what my plans for Friday were, then I would be concern, but as far as updating my Facebook, *psh* comon.

Oh, wow, newsfeed is so horrible, it gives you news about people you have on your friends list. Facebook is the least stalker friendly thing, you can't even look at a profile unless the other person allows you to with the security settings, heck, I wish my Xanga had that feature when I used to have one. I only see newsfeed as an improvement because it allows me to keep up with my friends with greater ease, even when these friends attacked me for my beliefs on newsfeed, newsfeed allowed me to see that this happened faster and deal with it more efficiently. It is the greatest thing since sliced bread.... well... not really, but I find it to be a great improvement in terms of my ability to deal with my facebook needs.

That would be pointless, as Facebook already has fields for providing all of that information to the general public, as well as a Status updater that can be accessed from a cell phone for providing people with up to the moment information on your location (if you feel so inclined).
And it was the ability to provide RL info to every loser with an account that first attracted these people to Facebook in the first place, yet they're bordering on riot over the idea that their use of the messaging service and profile updates might be made public (neverminding the fact that this info can be obtained pretty easily with NewsFeed).
Isn't nerd-drama just so precious?

If you don't want people knowing about your internet life, then don't join FaceBook, or MySpace or any community website. If you don't want people knowing where you are in Real Time, then don't use their mobile update service! Jeez...

Well, when I sign on to my facebook, I don't get any information about people I don't know. I only get information from the people whose profiles I could have just simply looked up anyway, which is what a real stalker would have done anyway. I simply do not see where the complaints about stalking come in, newsfeed really helps casual friends more than it helps stalkers.

Newsfeed does sort of weird me out, but I don't hate it necessarily. It just shows what your friends are doing -- which you could already find out by looking. However, I understand that some people don't want their every move broadcasted and brought to the forefront.
All that said, I'm sure facebook has received a lot of feedback, much of it negative, after the change. I'd doubt they'd take the time to respond to individual emails.

My guess is that some changes will be made. Perhaps they'll make it option to be a part of the "news feed". (if it isn't already -- I haven't checked).

Well, you can hide any of the posts on your mini-feed anyway, just by clicking the x.

To be honest, this is just a further degeneration of a site that was intended for creepy time-wasting vicarious voyeurism. If you're lame enough to have an account (as I am), and even lame enough to constantly update and check it (not I), well I see why you're annoyed, but whaddya really expect? Just leave the site and pickup the goddam phone to you friends. It really is a better way of having a social life.

When they added the "status" feature over the summer I was like WTF, this is creepy. But this is sooo much worse.

All of the information is already out there. But now a friend can click on my profile and see exactly who I've left a comment for. Before they would've had to search through all of my friends. And yes, before I could see if a friend was dating or single or what, but now i know the EXACT TIME this persons relationship status changed.

I mean, yeah, facebook was always great for stalking. But this is flipping ridiculous. Makes me plenty happy I was smart enough to not post things like my address or phone number on facebook.

I suspect it will be gone within a week, though. It is so unpopular.

Individually on each thing you have done, but how many people care or are smart enough to do that?

It is unpopular with the students, which are obviously not the target audience for this. This is more than likely for school administrators and job recruiters who check out your page and easily sort through who you are and what you have done so they can dish out "just" punishment for offsite offenses that "make the school look bad" or decide whether or not they should hire you or fire you.

Instead of allowing your friends to just look on your profile in the first place? So you are afraid that the people who can look at your facebook from the start are just trying to get your information to sell it to the commu-nazis? You put that information on the internet so that other people could see it and now you are upset that they see it?

So, wait, your argument is that the individuals that hate this are too stupid or care too little to correct the problem yet they somehow are intelligent enough or caring enough to try to address this issue? It doesn't quite add up.

School administrators and job recruiters could easily not be allowed on your site in the first place and newsfeed only goes to your friends. In your privacy options you can easily make it so that nobody but those you want to see your profile will be able to see it, regardless of school or anything else. I think it was designed for students who wanted a tool to keep up with their friends as the problem you speak of is so easily addressed. Besides, unless you unchecked the box in the privacy options like many people haven't all of your posts are kept on file anyway.

So, right, the defense is about idiocy.

Yeah, you can prevent people from looking at your profile if they have the same school account. I choose not to do this, however, I know of people who do block out non-friends that go to their school.

Get rid of all of your information on the mini-feed, or just block out people you don't want to look at your profile. Once again, I state that you can block out anyone you want from your profile, you can block out your non-friends even if they go to your school.

What oblivious to the great evil and wrong? Please, I just see this as mostly an improvement. You have your choice on whether or not you want stuff on your mini-feed. You have your choice about who gets your news-feed. You have more privacy than many other places because facebook is a closed community and you can prevent anyone from even seeing your profile if you choose, you can even prevent them from searching for your facebook(although you probably wouldn't want to). Facebook gives you a lot of freedom and it is not now super-stalker fun land unless you really like inviting your stalkers to be your friends.

I'm very concerned about the News & Mini feeds on Facebook. Although I do allow my friends and those at my Uni see my profile, the intricate documentation of my activities on the website is, I feel, a step too far. I accept that the same information can be retrieved by other means, but it would have required an effort. The feeds give me the feeling of being constantly monitored by those in charge of the site.

I would ideally like this feature to be optional and for me to select what I want it to show (without constantly deleting parts of the feed) in some kind of options for the thing. I personally wouldn't mind my friends and those others that can see my profile from knowing of any new notes or photos I've added, but for someone to see what thread in which group I've posted on and at what precise time is just going too far.
