A Prince is Born

I'm not sure if anyone other than the two Japan residents have been following this or not, but HH Kiko-himesama gave birth to a boy this morning in Japan.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060905/ap_on_re_as/japan_imperial_succession
The boy is currently the third in line to the throne, but is not the child of the current Crown Prince and Princess as Japan has a male only sucession law.

Previously no males were born to the Imperial Family in 40 years and Japan was actually thinking of changing it and allowing an reigning Empress for the first time in centuries.

So whadda think? Should they change the laws?

How is the other Princess doing? The news mentioned she had major issues of depression over this tradition.

I don't know. I for one am (almost) always content with the way things are.

Does it matter?
The fact that the gender of an heir to a ceremonial position would even be an issue is pathetic.

It's Japan. They fear loss of power of the penis.

There is a thing called tradition that people believe in as a solid thing to fall back on.

And you could file it under culture, I guess.

Is it pathetic that the British line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_of_succession_to_the_British_throne) goes to 893rd in line?

And good for Japan. I'm sure a change would be equal to the petty squabbling here in the U.S. over elections.

Those people are idiots.

Yes.

Which are also pathetic.

Recovering, but still has not resumed her public duties. There's a lot of speculation in Japan over whether this will help (by taking pressure off) or hurt (by making the pressure worse for the Crown Prince to have a boy) her.

No reason for them to change their customs, especially if this solves the problem.

Um... Princess Kiko gave birth, Kiko's name isn't even close to Koizumi (the current Prime Minister of Japan). So I have NO idea where that came from.

It doesn't actually aliveate it as there are three total canadates to the Imperial Throne (The Crown Prince, his youngest brother, and the new child).

And it IS going to take a bit before the kid fathers children. ;)

From the times article, a man with the right idea:

"Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, 60, a cousin of the current emperor, argued for the revival of the concubine system, which in the past had made plenty of child-bearing women available to the emperor."

That guy almost got himself killed. A lot of women were about ready to line up and take turn hitting him with something heavy when he said that. ;)

First off, YEA!!!! Omedetou, Kiku-sama.

As for the laws, the current law only dates back to 1947, although it's a revision of a 1889 (IIRC?) law. I think the rules should revert back to the pre-Meiji period which did allow Emperesses to hold the Chrysanthemum Throne.

How is the other Princess doing? The news mentioned she had major issues of depression over this tradition.

Masako's doing better, but as NERVUN said, she's still not fully recovered.

Interestingly, that tradition ended only with the previous Emperor Showa (aka Hirohito).
