Need Creepy Music
I need to know if anyone knows any music that's a bit creepy, eerie, without lyrics. I'm working on a project and if this is a 'homework help' kind of thread, I am very sorry, and will not complain if this is closed, however I don't know any other way to have it work. I have a song set in mind kinda - the song played during the Diablo II preview with the Wanderer, though I'm not sure what the name of that song is.
Does anybody know? The name of the song when the Wanderer in the Diablo 2 preview is in the carriage holding the SoulStone? I would greatly appreciate if anyone had the name, and even more if they found a link (as I do not use any kind of file sharing program - I'm legal 100%) to the download. However, if you know the tune, but don't know the name or place, then know that I'm looking for a song along those lines, with a very delicate, eerie kind of music. Please help, and thank you if you do help.
Once more, sorry if this thread breaks the rules, I've just exhausted my other options (which includes emailing Blizzard, on which I got no reply and it's been a week).
*A note, but know that I am getting this together, so it is no gigantic rush, but I would like if sample links at the least are sent so I know what songs or types to focus on, since there are many kinds of songs that fit my description.

Well, i don't know the Diablo 2 song, but I would advise that you take a look at Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony Op. 110a. There's a couple parts to it, there's a dramatic bit, that's often ripped off of for horror movie soundtracks, and there's another bit that kind of evokes slow decay. Very good options.
Okay, I'll check it out, thanks.
Still looking for that name, though.

I got one!
This is the Amityville Horror (the 70's verison) theme song.

Have you tried Paris Hiltons single. Not really creepy, more downright scary.;)
Wilgrove, that doesn't work.
And Pax Dei...I want people creeped out, not downright scared.

There are entire genres of music that may interest you. I listen to industrial music, much of which is without lyrics and often very dark in atmosphere. You can find industrial albums that will sound like soundtracks to SciFi films or video games ... and others that sound like pieces from classic horror films.
I've never played Diablo, so I don't know what exactly you have in mind. However, you can find free 30-second samples of music on amazon.com. :)
I'm going to suggest you use amazon to look up two bands "Forma Tadre" and "Haujobb". They both have electronic music that could easily fit in video games. In particular, Daniel M. of Haujobb wrote an alternate opening sequence for one of the Aliens movies that is included one of his more recent albums. (I think he did this on his own and was not paid to do this ... though there are a number of industrial artists whom actually make a living scoring the menu selections and extra features on DVDs or other similar work, as sound engineering has some incredibly useful skills in composing electronic music.)
If you want something darker and more sinister sounding, "the Retrosic", "Yelworc" and "Wumpscut" are three other bands worth checking out.
Do keep in mind, all of the artists work I've mentioned actually belongs to people trying to make a living producing and performing music ... so they do *not* take kindly to people distributing their music. But listening to samples or possibly doing this for a school project would probably flatter most of these musicians. :)

The topic would have been so much more interesting if the request wasn't so specific. Sadly, I don't remember that track from Diablo either, although I've played the game. Could you at least describe the composition? Does it have some sort of percussion, is it fast-paced, or is it a flowing slow track?
Try various dark ambient artists. Endura, Funerary Call, Moevot, old Mortiis, Raison d'Etre, Velehentor - there's a whole lot of them, - I bet you shall find something that suits you even better than this track.

I'll see what I can find.
On the atmospheric, creepy idea... if you can find a copy of the music to "American McGee's Alice" game... that's very atmospheric. There are occassional words - but no songs.
The 'text' is things like "Anyone who says there is nothing like a nice cup of tea for settling the nerves... never had real tea. It's like a shot of adrenialin straight to the heart" - from the track "I'm Not Edible".
Gothic-y, horror-y, very much like demented musicbox music.
If you can find them, there is an 'Industrial Ambient" band called "Lab Report"... sometimes they use lyrics, sometimes not - but the 'lyrics' (when present) are murmured repetitions of mantric phrases. Worth listening to, maybe.
Also worth looking up, maybe... the earlier career of the band "Delirium". Now, they make Enigma-sounding stuff, but their earlier career was much more like soundtrack stuff.

The song is very slow, very subtle, very simple.

Yay! I second Haujobb, Forme Tadre and :Wumpscut:
Very atmospheric. "Doubting Thomas" and "Download" are others that leap to mind, now that I am reminded.

The music for Diablo 2 and whoever made it should be in the instruction manual if you don't have it then you'll have to complete it and carefully watch the credits.
http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/demos/movies/diablo2.exe
If anyone has the time or patience to download that, it's the trailer I was talking about. The song at the beginning is what I'm talking about when 'Blizzard Entertainment Presents' fades in.
Right now, I'm trying to get my hands on some samples of the other songs posted...to no avail.

The third movement of the solo cello sonata from Zoltan Kodaly's opus no.8
It will chill your blood cold.
I recommend Sun-Won Yang's recording.
maybe you should try some drone ambient (or other music that uses a lot of drones). biosphere for instance, when played in the right environement his music should be kind of scary and it is very subtle, slow and simple.
samples (http://www.amazon.com/Substrata-Biosphere/dp/B0000057OQ/sr=8-3/qid=1157487805/ref=pd_bbs_3/103-1969693-4114228?ie=UTF8&s=music)
but if you want really terrifying slow and simple music try some drone metal, i'm not really in this kind of music but some other people on these boards should be able to help you out.

The song is very slow, very subtle, very simple.
That helps.
Try sampling:
Artist: Wumpscut
Album: Mesner Tracks
Track: Ceremony
Length: 4 mins (the sample on amazon is but 30 secs, but accurately captures the track)
It is slow, subtle, simple, and CREEPY.
Note on Wumpscut ... the album art is designed to shock people, and honestly not very school or work friendly. This particular album is, at times, rather intense. But I think it is along the lines of what you are looking for.
As an aside, there is another track on the album titled "Crate", which is a cover of the Terminator theme. Crate kicks serious butt. I'm also very fond of the track "Lindbergh [Ocean part]", as aside from a short audio sample that I believe is from Lindbergh it is also a slow, subtle, and simple piece that carries a good steady beat.

Or maybe this artist (http://svc.nulll-void.com/udom_index.htm). He's talented and he distributes his magnificient music for free. Most of the tracks are ambient, though the early albums are Funeral Doom Metal.

The 2nd movement of Franck's Symphony in D Minor (1888) is damn creepy and a little somber, subdued. It was used as the theme in the radio series Quiet Please and gave the show a very creepy feel.

Creepy music? Perhaps the soundtrack from Bram Stoker's Dracula would do something for you.
That would be the work of Polish classical composer Wojciech Kilar ... I recently (this year) bought his Angelus / Exodus / Krzesany. Love it. Though I personally feel his music, tends to have a majesty quality and though he composes dark music, it isn't what I'd call creepy. Kilar also scored the Pianist. A most amazing man!
On the subject of NationStates, recently I created a NSWiki entry for the Mikitivity Gewandhaus Orchestra and plan to actually create a series of fictional composers ... but I've first been looking for a neo-classical or classical song that is public domained that I could "incorporate" as my national anthem.

That was my 1st thought.
I'll also second Anti-Social Darwinism's suggestion of Saint-Saens "Danse Macabre".
Some more modern orchestral music suggestions, Krzysztof Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima and Polymorphia.
I'd also suggest The Grassy Knoll (http://www.amazon.com/Grassy-Knoll/artist/B000AQ4Y0G/002-9851764-2721605), especially the self titled first album and the second album Positive.

Since someone has already suggested Danse Macabre - Saint-Saens, how about......
Night On Bald Mountain - Mussorgsky
Music For Strings Percussion and Celesta: III Adagio - Bartok
Symphonie Fantastique V Op.14: The Witches Sabbath - Berlioz
Toccata and Fugue in D Minor - Bach
The Planets: Mars - The Bringer Of War - Holst
The Sorcerers' Apprentice - Dukas
De Natura Sonoris No. 2 - Penderecki
In The Hall Of The Mountain King - Grieg
Most if not all of these can be played by going to the Napster free service. You can play each one up to 5 times before you can't access it anymore. But if you download Audacity first, that won't be a problem. Hope this helps. Click the NOT READY TO JOIN? link at the bottom.
http://www.napster.com/index.html
I don't know the track you're after, but I can give some other suggestions...
The album "Black One" by Sunn O))) is in my opinion some of the creepiest (and heaviest) music ever made. It's mostly instrumental but there vocals on some of the tracks.
And on a different track, the album "Black Earth" by Bohren and der Club of Gore is some very creepy instrumental jazz.
(as I do not use any kind of file sharing program - I'm legal 100%)
But this is a perfect indication on why that attitude (and more, the legality of filesharing) sucks. How else are you going to sample this music? I know that I for one won't pay for music I haven't heard before.

Also worth looking up, maybe... the earlier career of the band "Delirium".That's a fantastic suggestion. "Delirium" has some very creepy music.
<snip>You have "Dead Can Dance" in your sig and you don't mention them? Tsk.
Let's see... most anything off the Projekt label would suffice. Speaking of DCD, look into Lisa Gerrad's solo work, it's pretty creepy.
Spinning into the more esoteric, there are several albums by "Scorn" that would certainly work. They were founded by a former "Napalm Death" member (Mick Harris), but are in the industrial ambient genre mentioned by Grave. 'Zander', 'Collosus', and 'White Irises Blind' are all good albums. If you want even creeper, then you can't go wrong with C17H19NO3 (either the 'Terra Damnata' or 'Terra Null' albums) or, for probably the creepiest shit I've ever heard, "Death Ambient (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000003YU3?v=glance)".
And, since I won't make the same mistake Mik did, I'll mention the band in my sig: Switchblade Symphony, especially the song I'm quoting (which is off the album 'Serpentine Gallery').
Most, if not all, of the albums I've mentioned are available on Amazon, and most of them provide samples.
For the Diablo II music, you might try looking here (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/mp3/lod.shtml). This is as official a site as you can get, so those mp3s are perfectly legal.

Meh, I refuse to listen to him out of principle...I don't really find black metal all that "creepy" though.
