When i tell people i know all 50 states in alphabetical order, they look at me like im crazy. Its because of this damn song that haunts me to this day, learned in elementary school, 28 years later. Anyone remember learning the song Fifty Nifty United States ?

Its amazing how song makes you remember stuff even decades later. If i was just given a list of the states and told to memorize it there is no WAY i would remmeber it past the next test, but to this day i do cause of that damn song.

One saving grace version of "Fifty Nifty United States" was sung by the Seattle-area group the Urban Rhythms Gospel Choir. They did a full on medium-Gospel swing version of it, and it kicked ass.

Other than that, it's a cheesy attempt to capture some of the 70s "School House Rock" magic that had Saturday morning cartoon watchers of the era memorizing important lessons in civics, mathematics, grammar and science against their will. I know that I'll never forget the preamble to the Constitution of the United States because of that idea, but "Fifty Nifty" was embarassingly unsubtle and ham-handed about it.

Perhaps the lyrics will jog memories...

Fifty Nifty United States
By Ray Charles

Fifty nifty United States from thirteen original colonies;
Fifty nifty stars in the flag that billows so beautifully in the breeze.
Each individual state contributes a quality that is great.
Each individual state deserves a bow,
let’s salute them now.

Fifty nifty United States from thirteen original colonies,
Shout 'em, tout 'em. Tell all about 'em,
One by one till we've given a day to every state in the USA ,
in the USA., in the USA .

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas,
California, Colorado, Connecticut;
Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii,
Idaho, Illinois, Indiana;
Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Michigan;
Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana,
Nebraska, Nevada;
New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York,
North Carolina, North Dakota, O-hi-o;
Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania,
Rhode Island, South Carolina,
South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas;
Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington,
West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wy-o ming.

North, south, east, west, oooh…
In our cool, considerate, objective, un-prejudiced opinion,
(name of home state) is the best--of the

Fifty nifty United States from thirteen original colonies,
Fifty nifty stars in the flag that billows so beautifully in the breeze.
Each individual state contributes a quality that is great.
Each individual state deserves a bow, let’s salute them now.

Fifty nifty United States from thirteen original colonies,
add up to U-S-A!

I remember that song from being required to sing it in 2nd Grade. Been a very long time since I've heard it.
