Dawn of War: Dark Crusade

So I've just played the new demo for this upcoming expansion pack for DoW, and it does look pretty good. Risk-style combat map? Nice. Few new units for existing races? Pretty funky.

Then it comes to the two new races. They both "look" good, and the Tau are great for the game.

But being a collector of Necrons from the tabletop game I can't help wondering how they're going to work as an army in-game. For a start they have only one vehicle, the Monolith. Damn good vehicle, but it does sorta limit your options. (In the Necron army as a whole there are far fewer unit types than many other armies.

Secondly, how is research going to work? The Necrons have remained essentially unchanged for thousands and thousands of years, how come they start learning stuff now?

A third point is the technology: On the tabletop they have kick-ass weapons (Warscythes and Gauss weapondry for starters), but compensate by being expensive in points cost. So how are they going to balance a unit of Pariahs, armed with the usual Warscythes, (a blade that can swipe off a tank barrel) in-game without somwhat changing the accepted lore?

Finally, in the gameplay videos you can see that the devs have chosen the Nightbringer as the "top" unit. How the hell can you balance the ability to field a Star God? The C'tan are totally lethal on the tabletop, they even get special rules as a whole separate race. These guys feast on the energy from stars and the devs are suggesting that they can be taken down by anything less than a full CHAPTER of Space Marines/Eldar/Chaos Marines etc?

(A minor aspect I'm wondering at is how they'll handle the fact that no new Necrons can be built, or the "We'll Be Back!" special rule.)

So those are my thoughts, anyone got some ideas as to how it could work?

I don't think about it. I just think it's going to be boss.

Hey Trandonor,

Players of the tabletop can bitch and bitch (and then bitch some more) about Dawn of War being true to the table top rules and individual races. The point is it can't, Dawn of War is a game and although there are some similarities it should not be compared to its distant tabletop cousin.

For Example: If Dawn of War was based on the story line of Warhammer 40k the Eldar could orbital bombard the battle field (killing everyone) from their craft worlds, but they can't cause that would unbalance the game.

There are few examples of DoW following War40k rules or law. DoW is a representation of it, nothing more.

If they were ever considering on maying the k'tan anything like the tabletop version, Eldar players would demand that The Avatar be beefed up, the same for chaos etc.

Hope this helps,

Yea, I suppose so. The Space Marines having their "And They Shall Know No Fear" special rule would be a problem as well.

But even realism aside, are the Necrons diverse enough? They have only the one vehicle (Monolith), and ten other units (Including the Nightbringer, and leaving out the Deciever). Compare that to the fact that the original races are getting five new units each (If I recall correctly), and it could be an issue. (Plus how can the devs then boast "New Units For Everyone!" in the next expansion pack? :P)
