Tennis Feminism

I was watching the US Open, and I realized that it is quite sexist that women only have to play a maximum of 3 sets while men have to play a maximum of 5. Aren't any feminists protesting this blatant unfairness? After all, women are equal to men in sports, so both should play the same number of sets, right?

But all that feminists have worked so hard for is coming undone! How can you not take action against this wanton male supremacy!? Surely we shouldn't regress to the 50s in terms of women's rights.

I don't know about the US Open, but at Wimbledon time, lots of people protest that women should be paid as much as men, and play the full 5 sets.

So, broadly, yes, they do protest about inequality between the sexes in tennis. I don't know if it coalesces around the US Open, but as I say, it certainly does at other Grand Slam events.

If you wanna be fair women should have to compete against men if they want to play sports. Would that not make them equal rather than giving them their own little league because they are not good enough?

Obviously you haven't watched the Knitting Championship this year. Women dominated the men at the internationally televized event, which resulted in a win for Hazel Tindall with 255 stitches in 3 minutes, a world record. Your bigotry is not amusing.

There was a rather famous tennis match resulting from a certain man (Bobby Riggs, former men's tennis champion) with a tennis history saying that no woman could beat a man in tennis.

After a certain female tennis player (Billie Jean King) whooped his tail on the court, hilarity ensued.

Frankly, I think female tennis players would by and large not have trouble competing - but it's a spectator thing. Who watches men's tennis anyway? They don't wear as short shorts.

It's not a matter of not being good enough. It's a matter of physical differences between the sexes. Women don't have the bone or muscle density of men, and to expect them to compete, elite versus elite, is ludicrous.

That is a typical argument borne out of a misguided view of male supremacy. You feel emasculated when women are better than you at a sport. Thus, you claim that the sport is "bullshit" or "not a real sport" so that your sex can enjoy a continued illusion of athletic prowess. Also, women are worse at some sports then men because the male/female segregation adversely affects the athletic abilities of many women.

why can't a women compete against men if they want to think about it there would still be women’s events(or men’s events in some sports) its just that the title of world champion would actually be fair if women could also have a chance to achieve it

Also on an elite level I doubt there is as much difference between the sexes it balances out usually with women being more nimble yet somewhat lacking in power whereas men are strong yet the muscle bulk makes us less flexible and such

About the only major sport where women and men compete with each other at an elite level--and then only rarely--is golf. And when I say rarely, I mean rarely--there's only been a handful of women who have tried to compete on the men's tour, and I don't believe that any of them have finished in the money. Michelle Wie will likely do so eventually, but she'll be the exception rather than the rule.

so as you can see by golf it makes no real difference in that sport men seem to be superior but still women have there own cups its just now women actually have a chance to compete against the men

So do tell why a woman shouldn’t compete against the odds if she chooses to?

But you don't get to chose what level of play you're capable of, you have to fight for it and some thing have to be given by chance and nature. I don't think at the top level of competition women are a match for the men.

I think I have found an article about it, though I am surprised how hard it is to find comments/articles on it.

I dont think women can compete against men at an elite level. Take for example the serve, the serve in tennis is very important and to be honest men would thrash women at serving. It is likely you could get a scenaro where men won games just on the serve. That just isnt fair hence men and women's competitions. But if women want to play 5 sets then i say let them but my personal opinion is their quality would detereate if they played more than 3 sets so i dont see the point in playing 5

When I was an undergrad, some friends of mine and I would play golf with the caveat that when you were teeing off, you had to hit your first shot past the ladies' tees, or play the next hole with your dick out to prove you're a man.

Seriously, sports have always been about equivalence between competitors. You don't see welterweights boxing heavyweights or 120-lbers wrestling 200-lbers (and in the US, at least through high school, women do competitively wrestle men). If you're a 5'4" male and weigh less than 190, you're almost certainly a gymnast not a linebacker.

As for the number of sets of tennis, I'd just as soon see them all play best of three and go all out from the first serve.
