Just a random thought. What's most likely to be the root of an oppressive regime where you live? And, for some added giggles, though it won't be in the pool, what would you do if it came about?

The BNP, and if they got into power I'd use my SA80A2 (which every house would have to have) and gun the fuckers down.

As for what I'd do about it, well, you really don't know untill you're in that situation. I'd hope I'd have the strength of will not to bow down, but to resist, and the presence of mind to do it effectivly.

What about the peaceful protest approach? Which, as far as I can tell, involves both getting beaten over the head without actually attacking the people dragging you off.

That's a matter of personal choice. You gatta look in yourself and decide what's right by you. Personally, while I would not initiate violence, I will fight like a caged animal against anyone who tries to make a slave of me.

I voted a neo-conservative regime. Despite what a large portion of voters so far think, (well, a quarter so far) the majority of Christians do not want to live under a theocracy of ANY kind.

Or the resistance will be viciously opressed, and people won't want to risk torture and death.

There were numerous rebelions against Stalin. He inharented a "revolution" made up of many smaller revolutions, most of which were not compatible with his highly centralized and authoritarian governing style. So he faced a populations with rifles, gernades, takes, howitzers, naval vessles, and they were all ruthlessly crushed.

Becides, totalitarian governments, especially the kind that would rise in the West today, would have a 1984 thing going on, where they have everyone (or most people anyway) so in love with the opressive state. Nationalist pride and the like.
