Favorite Comic?

So I'm flipping channels the other night and I come across Dane Cook on HBO, and the name is vaguely familiar for some reason, so I stop to see what the deal is. He's supposed to be a comic, from what I understand, but I didn't find him to be all that funny.

Now I'm a lover of comedy, in all its various forms. I'd rather see a comedy than any other sort of film. I've spent many a night in a comedy club, and I used to tape Short Attention Span Theater when it was on Comedy Central (the first place I really saw Jon Stewart).

But my favorite kind of comedy is that which examines the human condition--Chris Rock riffing on race, George Carlin talking about the stupid things we do with language, pretty much anything Dave Chappelle does. And I'm also fond of the stuff that points out the hypocrisy in society--Stewart, Colbert, even Dennis Miller back in the day.

So what's your favorite kind of comedy and who's your favorite comic(s)? No poll, because the field is too vast to even begin to do it justice.

I am in the same boat as you, I really liked Gallagher when he wasn't smashing things.

Gallagher: What'd I see the other day that lacks style... 'My wife ran off with Bigfoot'. You're gonna tell everyone in the world you're such a shit to live with that she ran off with a beast?

Dennis Leary, George Carlin, Carlos Mencia also favorites.

I also really liked Mitch Hedburg, but he was a completly different style, it's sad that he wasn't around longer.

No poll, because the field is too vast to even begin to do it justice.Calvin and Hobbes and the FarSide are my favorite comics from when I was little. Recently, I've gotten to like Ctrl+Alt+Del and Elf Only Inn (though EOI hasn't been updated in years :(). I dip into This Modern World occasionally, but it usually stops being funny if you don't put enough distance between the different cartoons, because it is the same rhetoric over and over again.

Comedian-wise, Tom Lehrer rocks my boat :D

Right now, Kaya Yanar.. although I don't expect many of you to have heard of him :D
Oliver Kalofe isn't bad, and of course Bully. Although I didn't fancy Traumschiff much.

Bookwise, Liberty Meadows, Get Fuzzy and Anything by Walter Moers and Ralf Koenig at the moment, as well as Nicht Lustig.

No, seriously, I've got two CDs of him and I regularly nearly wet myself laughing when listening to them. Especially when he describes his childhood.

He's the king. His bit about Rush Limbaugh has put him at the top of my list for all time.

Personally, Eddie Izzard is king for me. Followed very closely by Bill Bailey, then Jimmy Carr. And I've liked Rich Hall whenever I've seen him, and Dylan Moran especially in Black Books.

I watch the Colbert Report. Does that count? People always point out to me that Colbert is too brash and whatnot, but I like it. Some episodes made me cringe (ie: when his guest was his co-star from that Candy movie, and they did a tumbling routine), but he's had some great jokes.

I devour stand-up omnivorously and it would be shorter to list the comedians I DON'T find funny. But I won't. They don't deserve mention.

I just watched my first Carlos Mencia performance and I laughed my tits off. :)

Here are a few good ones that haven't been mentioned yet:

Mark Gross
Robert Schimmel
Denis Leary
Sam Kinison
Dennis Wolfberg
Billy Crystal

Second on David Cross. He also did "Mr. Show" with Bob Odenkirk which ruled. He tends to be kind of inflammatory like George Carlin, so it will turn some people off.

Sad about Mitch Hedberg. If anyone else had said what he said, it would not have been funny, but he made it hilarious somehow.

Yeah, me too. I was all ready to type "Calvin & Hobbes!" when the OP threw me off completely.

I'll have to go with Jon Stewart.

Alright, so I don't really know many US comedians, so he's kind of winning by default, but I love him so much I doubt anyone else could beat him. :)

Sacha Baron Cohen Oooh yeah, he's good.

ETA: Oh, just saw a Mitch Hedberg special for the first time the other day - I couldn't get used to his accent and delivery, but I laughed so hard I cried.

Well, I'm such a fan of Jon Steward that it seems to have trickled down to my daughter via cellular memory. She's 15 months old and loves the Daily Show. She'll sit and cheer Jon Stewart, but (thanks be to the benevolent TV gods) she'll completly ignore Barney.

Baisicly, I think the point of comedy is to take truths and make them presentable in new ways. The essence of comedy is when you're comfortable looking at things one way, the comedian shows you things his way, you say "oh yeah," and for an instant, you see the world both ways.

That's why you have the phrase "it's funny because it's true." If it wasn't true, it wouldn't be funny. That's why Dennis Miller's talk show was canelled so quickly. He was saying stupid shit like "this president brought respectability to the White House." If Dubya brought respectability to the White House, it was only to have it shot and secretly buried.

That's why Carlos Mencia and jokes like "why don't they make the whole plane out of the black box," aren't funny. Their jokes are based on false premises, and the hope that you won't see the flaw in their logic.

"Why do they have signs that say 'no pets allowed except for seeing eye dogs? Who's supposed to read that sign. dee de deee!"
Maybe the people who can see and think that they're allowed to bring their pets in because that guy in the funny sunglasses just brought his dog inside. dee de deee you ignorant motherfucker!

Also, the humor of a joke is inversly proportional to the time it takes to deliver the punchline. That's why it's a punchline, not a stranglehold on humor.

In short,
(truth + new perspective)/time = funny
(bullshit + bullshit perspective)time = fucking annoying
