when I grow up.......

what do you want to be when you grow up? hmm??

Some of you may remember a while ago me pondering my educational future, if you don't, I am going to get to go back to school next summer and I was in a quandry as to what I should study.

I don't really "need" a job, but it would be nice to have more money, mostly I just am going because I can and I want to.

Anyway, I have decided that I am going into the mental health field, I can finish my degree in a short 2 years combining my past credits and will be able to work weekends so that I can still stay home with my kids and homeschool and all that crap, I found a hospital that will pay for my tuition so I start work there as a part-time "mental health tech" in November, I will have been there 1 month past the time that you have to before they will pay for your tuition when school starts so that's nice.

Anyway, what do you want to be? what are you now?

also, slightly on topic I told my kids today of my plans and they told me what they want to be (not that you guys care)

5 year old- President

Financial analyist. Of course, I'd say it's a done deal since I love finance/economics and I'm already in college in the program. When I was younger, I wanted to be an architect, lawyer, and some other things I can't remember but were probably cool.

I think I even wanted to be a "storm chaser" meteorologist.

At the moment though I'm undecided. Hopefully a career will come to me. Probably be a desk pilot of some kind.

I'm interested in being a psychologist. Not because I get to help people, but because I get to study the human brain. I find the human brain the most confusing thing on this planet, and I take every opportunity to study it. As a psychologist, it will be my job to.

But I want to be a soldier, a paramedic, or a professional MMA fighter (sort of like a pro boxer, but not fake.)

Hell, I could be all three...

At the moment it's a serious and very tricky toss up between an astrophysicist and a hardcore, dedicated gamer with a job in some retail store to pay the rent. Hell if I get good enough I could even work the pro gamer tournaments.

Now this may sounds ridiculous, but here's the thing:

Astrophysics: Very interesting topic, but only in very specific areas. A lot of hassle and hard work to get to a position where employment is even possible, and even more so to be able to work in the field I find most interesting. More worthwhile, and certainly better paid.

Gamer: Sad though it may sound I am becoming an ever more hardcore gamer, as is my best friend. We're seriously considering getting a couple of other friends in, who are or could be equally hardcore, renting a flat somewhere, getting jobs in retail (maybe even a game store :D) to just pay the bills and stuff, but mainly to dedicate our time and money towards ever more awesome entertainent systems. Again it sounds sad, but I could really see myself enjoying dedicating professional life to something I enjoy as much as gaming.

Of course none of this is to say I'd become one of those deplorably socially inept gamers with friends only online. I manage to upkeep an active social life right now, along with college and my current level of electronic pastimes, so I needn't worry about becoming a recluse.

Maybe I could get a job as a games-tester...

Well, I recommend astrophysicist... it'd be more fulfilling in the long run, and you could still be a gamer. But it's entirely up to you, pick the one you'd be happiest with. :)

First of all, congratulations. Go for it girl. I just found out today that my daughter-in-law (we consider her our daughter) has gone back to school to become a nurse’s assistant. Yea, for the both of you.

Secondly, DON'T EVER GROW UP. at least mentally. :)

Third, what do I want to be when I grow up? Well, I'm 63 years young (or old) and am not sure. I like teaching electronics and may go back to that part time when I retire in 3 years, 11 days, 2 hours, and ___ minutes.

What have I done? Paper boy, soda jerk, taxi driver, security guard, bar back, salesman, avionics technician, aircraft maintenance manager, avionics & electronics instructor, and engineer. Probably a few other things I've forgotten.

Hehe, my every instinct agrees with you, and I appreciate how much better for me it will be in the long run, but... just a year or two of gaming wouldn't hurt would it? :D As to which I'll be happiest with, well, deciding that is the problem :D

The real reason this indecision came up is the fact that I currently have really rather a lot of money (relative to your average 17 year old that is) in my bank account towards my gap year travelling plans, and I can't help but think of the awesome HDTV with digi surround sound that could buy, with plenty left over for all the super sweet games coming out.

I expect it's just a phase, which I'll grow out of soon enough. But if not I could always get my degree then cut myself off from society for a year or two eh? :D Ah... a man can dream can he not?

The best fit for me at this point is being a history professor.
I love history, and I'm ridculously good at it. (It feels so good knowing you don't have to study and you can still easily get an 95+ in your classes)
I've also thought of doing something in politics, economics, and such, but that's about it. The only thing I know for sure is I don't plan to be my friends, who seem to be content with going to UT, getting some engineering degree, and living a dull life.

I never managed a realistic grasp of "what I want to be."

I wanted at one point to fly. There was the idea that I'd be a fighter pilot, but I had some budding pacifism that made me settle on wanting to fly helicopters for the Coast Gaurd 'cause rescuing people seemed cooler. But, I'm colorblind.

I wanted to design the first craft that could pass back and forth from atmosphere to space in flight. But I suck at math, and really don't like doing it. I liked the idea of such a craft, it turns out, but had no real interest in working out its details. Exactly not engineer material.

I wanted to win the sort of 'triple crown' of racing, the Indy 500, Monaco, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Or drive rally cars. Just race in general. Not good enough.

I actually was a musician for a while, just not a good enough one.

During all of that I dug the hell out of movies, but felt like it's silly to say you want to do movies. But then I thought, everything else has been silly, why should that hold me back? So now I'm a playwright and do set crew work on film an television and working on getting my short filmed in the hopes that I'll get a chance to make my own movies.

I can't help but think if I had just wished to be a pony it'd be easier. I'd probably be a pony right now.

Ok, that isn't a field but it is one of the biggest motivating factors in choosing my field. I will probably end up working for some tech company as an engineer at first then later as some form of manager hopefully. The interesting thing is that I sort of went full circle with my career path thing. When I grew up I wanted to be a scientist, then I went through all sorts of confusion then I ended up working towards a Bachelor of Science.

Growing up I was the boring one - I wanted to be the typical stuff. My little bro was the funny one. For a long time he wanted to be a lawyer. And when he was about 4 or 5, he told our Nana he wanted to be a pimp. Of course, that was back around the height of the blaxploitation films, and he had no idea. Nana was pretty cool about it. So a little patience and a little saving up before any Unexpected Adventures. Still, no rush. I may well live another fifty years yet, and who knows what'll happen in the meantime? Stuff tends to turn up when you're not looking for it.

I think she is trying to model her business after one of my tax clients, he has his own truck and just takes the jobs he wants to, he and his wife go around together like 4 days a week driving everywhere and then when they aren't trying to get something somewhere they sightsee at whatever city they come by, he is making pretty good money and getting to see the country. It's not a typical story for a truck driver (I have heard bad-badness from some of them) but she is 3 and has wishful thinking I guess.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a soldier, so I did it, but decided it wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. Currently the plan is to teach French, hopefully at the university level. I'd really like to go to France for a few years to teach English, but we'll see how that works.

I don't really "need" a job, but it would be nice to have more money, mostly I just am going because I can and I want to.

now wouldn't that be a nice position to be in? :(

what did i want to be when i grew up? a doctor. largely cos i got told from a very young age that i'd make a good one, but when it came to actually visiting medical schools and the like, i realised that i wouldn't actually be able to take the emotional and stress aspects of the job, much as i'd like to help people. plus grades were slipping by then, heh.
as of now i have no idea what i want to do bar... as little as possible :p

it wasn't long ago at all that I was living on the street. ;) we aren't rich, in fact we are what most would consider poor, but with planning and saving and sacrifice we are financially sound. I would probably spend more keeping a job than I make now, but it has come up that I can go back to school, so it seems like a smart decision, since we may hit hard times in the future, and it would be nice if I were more educated. ;)

How old are you, Smunkee?

You are not forced to answer, just curiosity.

And regarding the question, I am already what I wanted to be when I was a kid. I think I realized all my dreams at the age of 23, that is not bad, from now on, every achievement is a luxury.

I always wanted to play the Elgar cello concerto for an audience, although :(
Never achieved anything far from just being another cello in the orchestra.

I've never really known what I wanna do next. I'm limited by my epilepsy as I can't (shouldn't) spend all day working on a computer (been there it sucked anyhow:D ).

I would love to be a herpetologist along the lines of what Mark O'Shea does (venom research and tv work, conservation etc.). I met him at a talk at London zoo - he rocked! Animals are my thing, reptiles (esp snakes) and dogs in particular. Unfortunately animal related jobs don't pay the bills:(

And I already own a part of a hundred year ish old Maine farmhouse (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j163/otnekstem/P1010142.jpg) with a hundred fifty-something acre blueberry farm (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j163/otnekstem/P1010137.jpg) that no one cares for or lives on, but still makes a profit. Haha, that's great. :) About the bear thing, did you ever get this forward?

In this life I'm a woman. In my next life, I'd like to come back as a bear. When you're a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that. Before you hibernate, you're supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that too. When you're a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you're sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute, cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that. If you're mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that. If you're a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat. Yup, gonna be a bear!!

When I was ~8 to 12, I wanted to be like Gyro Gearloose (the inventor from Donald Duck), and make all sorts of cool machines.

after about 12, that split up into either and/or any of:
A) The person who gave humanity interstellar drives
B) Leader of the most uber-army of high tech peace soldiers. They'd be so good they never needed to fight a war, because everyone was so scared of them they just signed the peace treaty anyways (Like the UN, but more effective, and less political nit-picking: PEACE NOW, OR ELSE...).

what do you want to be when you grow up?

Anyway, what do you want to be? what are you now?

also, slightly on topic I told my kids today of my plans and they told me what they want to be (not that you guys care)

nice. :D

I think your 5 year old would make an excellent President. I bet he even knows how to hold a book properly unlike the current one!

Anyway I don't have much ambition oh just to be Secretary General of the UN. Or head of my own corrupt yet profitable dictatorship. In the unlikely event that these goals will not be realised then I would settle for working with the UN as a Country Director, Working for an NGO-particularly GOAL, The Red Cross, writing policy (international or EU),or working for the department of foreign affairs. Wouldn't mind being an MEP etiher! I was asked to run in the local election but meh local politics isn't my thing at the moment.

Right now I work in International Education, I have just finished my BA and am about to start an MA in International Relations. All while doing Model UN ( in case I never make it to the real UN!)

All of these can imho be combined if I became, say, president. Look out, I'm old enough to run in the 2028 election!

I now realise that forcing the world into peace with weapons is, if ironic, not entirely beyond reality. A thought which, at times, concerns me.
C) the first Immortal

(this referring to: "to overcome the existential lonelyness of man")

You know, That's not such a bad idea.
I've lately noticed that "information overload" is not just a personal burn-out like disease, it also affects society, and scientific research in specific.
Each day, scientists write more scientific literature than a person could read in a month.
This causes scientists to miss information that could be crucial to his own current research, thereby delaying it.
To quote Newton: "We stand on the shoulder's of giants".
But it's hard to climb on a giant's shoulder and advance science if you are not aware of his existence, because you never had time to read an article of him/her

I think that, in the foreseeable future (meaning, our grandchildren may see it), there will be a neural interface, and from there, it's only a small step to a collective humanity-memory, instead of unefficient individual memory.
(Note: memory only, individuality should be retained!)

Contrary to Pompous world, I am being serious (sorry about that :D).

I forgot to mention I also dreamed of being a pyrokineticist (someone who controls flame with his mind). Fire Pwns!

When I grow up, I'll be stable... when I grow up, da-da-da-daa-daaaaaa...

I know that song... but from where?

It's not this one, is it? :)

Life's gonna suck when you grow up,
When you grow up, when you grow up
Life's gonna suck when you grow up,
It sucks pretty bad right now.

Hey! If you know the words, Sing along!

You're gonna hafta mow the lawn,
Do the dishes, make your bed.
You're gonna hafta go to school until you're seven-teen.
It's gonna seem about three times as long as that

You might have to go to war, shoot a gun, kill a nun.
You might have to go to war, when you get out of school.
Hey cheer up kids, it gets a lot worse.

You're gonna hafta deal with stress
Deal with stress, deal with stress.
You're gonna be a giant mess
When you get back from the war.

Santa Clause does not exist, and there's no Easter Bunny,
You'll find out when you grow up, that Big Bird isn't funny.
(funny, funny, hahahahaha!)

Life's gonna suck when you grow up,
When you grow up, when you grow up
Life's gonna suck when you grow up,
It sucks pretty bad right now.

You're gonna end up smoking crack, on your back, face the fact.
You're gonna end up hooked on smack, and then you're gonna die.

And then you're gonna die-ie-ie-ie-ie.

Something for the kids!

when I was little (under 5) I told everyone that I was going to be the statue of Liberty when I grew up.

up until a few months ago if you asked my 3 year old what she wanted to be she would say "a bear" and when someone would say "you can't be a bear" she would say "I want to be the person who can turn people into bears, I would be rich" :D

she apparenlty thinks there is a market for people to turn into bears......haha.
There isn't? And I invested all that money, too.:(

Today we made "magic wands" out of cardboard and glitter and she comes up to me and says "I am a fairy godmother I can make all your dreams come true, what's your wish?" and I said "I wish to be rich and well fed" and she wispers to me "you know that this thing is cardboard right?"

You should die first, start out dead and get it out of the way. Then you
wake up in an old age home feeling better every day.. You get kicked
out for being too healthy, go collect your pension, then, when you start
work, you get a gold watch on your first day. You work 40 years until
you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You drink alcohol, you
party, you're generally promiscuous and you get ready for High School.
You go to primary school, you become a kid, you play, you have no
responsibilities, you become a baby, then, you spend your last 9 Months
floating peacefully with luxuries like central heating, spa, room
service on tap, larger quarters everyday, and finally you finish off as
