Okay, before this thread begins, I know there's too many 'favorites' threads floating around, and I'm sorry, but I want to know more gamers dammit! Ahem... *regains composure*

So, what's your favorite video game of all time? Or are they all great to you? Or do you think games are spawn from Satan?

After 25 years of games, it's tough!

A few favorites...

The Civilization series of course (I, II, 3 and 4...)
Wasteland.
Pool of Radiance, especially the module made for Neverwinter Nights. (NOT that Ubisoft abortion thing they made recently, I'm talking about the original game!)
Defender
Panzer General
Jedi Knight (finally! Light sabre battles!)
Castle Wolfenstein
Doom
Age of Empires
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The Civ 4 copy I.. uh... borrowed was so addictive I went and bought Civ 4 and the Warlords expansion.

Fuck this bullshit edit mode.

-Starsiege: Tribes (no other Tribes games) The original and best jetpacks, in your face Halo.
-Homeworld series. Best RTS, the end.
-Dark Messiah of Might and Magic when it releases. Who can't like the excellent first person melee and easy on the eyes, and computer, visual provided by the Soruce engine. Not to mention an apparent multiplayer mode.
-Guild Wars before Arena Net decided it would change its business model from trying to please the customer base into buying extras to coercing the customer base into buying extras.

Game I love to hate:
Halo and its spawn, Halo Jr.

RPG:
OBLIVION! All the Elder Scrolls games, really.
Praise be to Akatosh and All the Nine Divines, Hail Emperor Uriel Septim!
Its like Warhammer, only with shinier graphics.

FPS:
Call of Duty II
I almost shouted 'Hooo-RAH!' once or twice when playing as the Russians.

Strategy:
Total Annihilation.
Best. Game. Ever.
Think of it as The Elder Scrolls of Strategy.

Sub-Genre Turn-Based Strategy:
Deadlock: Planetary Conquest
It works bug free on my laptop and runs naturally in a window. And its fun.

Sub-Genre Management:
Dungeon Keeper series and their sexy cousins, Evil Genius and Startopia.
Railroad Tycoon comes in a close second.

Sports:
This whole genre sucks now. If they were thinking straight they would have made a sequel to Rocket Jockey.

Sim:
Il-2 Sturmovik, a flight sim that lets you play as the Russians...wowzorz.

That reminds me.
GTA - until now, the best sandbox ever. But it has been corrupted and it looks to be overtaken by Saint's Row.

Vigilante 8 pwns all auto destruction games. And Auto Assault is alot like Vigilante 8.

I forgot Evil Genius, great game.

Nah, she pissed around with the XML files. Not only is the game un-playable, but she also destroyed the damned Uninstall Wizard, so I can't get the damn thing off my PC.

And I can't reinstall the game because I have the 1.61 patch, the disk is the original 1.11 version *sighs* I really was born under an unlucky star.

For strategy games, Probably Civilization...

....buuuuuuuut, as Paradox seem to slowly be getting their shit together, i'm enjoying their games (esp. Victoria and Hearts of Iron 2) more and more; they're on the right track when it comes to making the ultimate strategy game, I think, whereas Civ grows a bit stale for me.

For FPS games, i'd have to say System Shock 2 is probably my favourite.

And as for RPGs, the Baldurs Gate Saga. Honourable mentions to the Ultima series, The Elder Scrolls series, Arcanum and the Fallout series.

I really like Red Orchestra, when it comes to FPSes. (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/redorchestraostfront4145/review.html?q=Red%20Orchestra)

For RPGS...on the Eastern side, FFIX will always be one of my favorites. On the Western side, I love Might and Magic VI and VII.

Super Smash Brothers is always fun. And, oddly, I really like Madden NFL 2003. I don't know why. I'm not interested in most sports. Hell, I only care about football to the slightest extent because my dad essentially imprinted his love for the Broncos on me from the second I was born, and yet, I really like it. (Hate the music that plays in the menues. Horrible stuff.) It might just be due to the strategy inherent in football itself.

Speaking of strategy, I love Rise of Nations, and suspect I will love Rise of Legends. I did play Total Annihilation once, but never got around to playing it again. I may just net myself a new copy at some point and take a look at it.

I really like a lot of others, but those are the ones that really spoke out to me at the moment. (To name a few of those others: the entire Ratchet and Clank series, the entire Kingdom Hearts series, and the Sly Cooper series.)

Try HOI2: Doomsday, and watchout for Europa Universalis III, plus I heard there's a Victoria II, subbed 'Revolutions', in the making. I really hope, when they finish Crusader Kings II, that one is able to import saved games to the next era, from 1066 all the way to (currently) 1954 - say hello to the Eurasian Empire of Bavaria :D

Yes, but it's a text adventure game. Be sure to take the screwdriver, to brush your teeth, and NEVER throw away that thing your aunt gave you.

I think my record was 150 odd points... the Babel fish I got after like 2 hours, but I had trouble at one spot later in the game and ultimately gave up. :(

Now by old school, do you mean 1999 games? :)

No, Ultima is older. The series dates back from a little game called Akalabeth, released in 1979, IIRC. :p

Yes, I must admit, most of the titles you guys are mentioning I have never heard of in my life, not even remotely.

Most of the ones mentioned are well worth checking out. You should scour abandonware sites if you've got any interest in gaming and can tolerate poor (by today's standards) graphics - be wary that abandonware is a legal grey area, but nobody has actually been prosecuted for downloading old, out of print software to date, and I doubt anyone has any vested interest in doing so. (I recommend www.the-underdogs.info, and downloading dosbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/) to help get them running.)

Oh, and I highly recommend this modernised version of Star Control 2 (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/) - I should have mentioned it in my other post. In retrospect, it's probably my favourite game ever. This one is actually freeware and sanctioned by the original game authors, so no legal issues here.

I am not a fanboy. I play Sly and GTA occassionally(on the rare occassion my PS2 cooperates). I just have way more Nintendo games and my Nintendo's seem to not hate cooperation.
whatev. the thing is that consoles are the gay. PC gaming is muuch better, especially since you can get mods (as in modifications, not as in Tactitical Grace and Frisbeeteria)

In no particular order:

Civ II, III and IV
Baldur's Gate
Diablo II
NWN
Halo
Grim Fandango
the Monkey Island series
Warcraft II

I'll probably think of more in a few minutes.

Sadly, a lot of good, memorable games like Day of the Tentacle, Everquest II or Rollcage were left out of the top. Some titles were placed there purely because of their sentimental value (say, Mortal Kombat), and I highly doubt that I shall enjoy playing them now.

It is to be noted that a considerable number of posters have a surprisingly good taste when it comes to games.

Thought of a few more:

- the Zork games
- the King's Quest games (for purely sentimental reasons)
- Privateer 2: The Darkening (again, for purely sentimental reasons)

if you have the time, try it again and give it some time... i had the same problem first but you get used to it - and it's really woth the time, for the plot alone.

Hmm, I might give it a try if I can unearth it. As I recall though, I played for a few hours before quitting with a raging headache.

:( Will it make you feel better if I tell you that the reason it's not on my list of favourite games is for personal reasons, and has nothing to do with the game itself? And yes, Grim Fandango rocks. I played through it again last year. Are you running CPU Killer or something similar? That solved my compatibility issues.

Only if you tell me why so that statement makes any sense!

Well, to be fair I suppose I should say that Counterstrike is a good game but not on my list of favourites. Half Life still rocks, I'll amend my list to add that one. Anyway, I originally got into video games because of an ex-boyfriend. It was a lot of fun, until the jerk dumped me because I started beating him consistently at CS. :p I knew it was his loss, not mine, but it still rankled at the time, and still makes me very annoyed when I think back on it.

I have no idea if it will work with older DOS games. I don't even really know what it does, beyond slowing down your computer so you can run older games and applications. Worked great for me. :)

none of my friends like it either.

It's good graphically and you know Valve are the masters of storytelling but somehow it fails. The enemy are the weak point, they pretty much just stand there and allow you to shoot them, making little attempt to get out the way. Bits of it are brilliant and had me gripped. The vehicle bits are waaay too long IMO and feel like an afterthought.

I'm playing HL2 Episode 1 at the mo - I prefer it to HL2.

I was going to break them up by category, but with one exception all the best games ever made were RPGs. So, to the exception:

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

That's the best strategy game ever. That's right. Better than CivII. CivIII was a huge disappointment. CivIV is pretty good, but it's no Alpha Centauri.

The RPGs:

Ultima IV
Ultima V
Ultima VII

Those three are the high art of computer gaming. All praise Richard Garriot.

Wasteland
Fallout
Fallout 2

RPGs don't need to be sword & sorcery to be excellent. Those are excellent. I fear for Fallout 3, though. Bethesda is developing it, and I really don't like the direction of the Elder Scrolls.

Ultima Underworld
Planescape: Torment

Those two were revolutionary. Torment's storyline is legendary, and Underworld's 3D technology vastly outclassed the most famous FPS of all time - DOOM - even though DOOM came out after Ultima Underworld.

Honourable mention:

Questron
Baldur's Gate (and almost everything else produced by BioWare)
The Total War franchise
Donkey Kongo

Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario World.

5th: C&C Generals
Equal 4th: Battlefield 2, CoD 2
3rd: Oblivion
2nd: Halo 2
1st: Rome Total War

If you exchanged Battlefield 2 with Battlefield 1942 you would have a nearly perfect list.
