Master of Puppets - the album that got me into metal. I still prefer it over all the others in the poll and then some, and since I own 8 and love 7 of those albums, that's saying something.

EDIT: Although Number of the Beast is closer than the rest to MoP - for some reason, my mind didn't register its presence properly...

Gonna go with Medadeth's 'Rust in Peace' after a bit of an internal debate between them and Metallica, but I really like a couple of tracks on Megadeth's album, nonetheless because I recently learned to play a few of them on the Bass.

However, I would have preferred the choice of 'Cowboys from Hell' by Pantera...

I really dig AC/DC .. but they aren't metal. I've always considered them hard rock. Same with GnR.

No, it's not, but i'm confused as to your definition of doom; only one album on that list (Paranoid) could fit in that genre, and even then it's only a "maybe".

But I suppose this isn't the worst list i've seen made.

Sabbath is considered Doom, that's why I mentioned it. Dio's metal strikes me as being very similar to Sabbath, and so I might put him there as well (mind you, I've only heard a little Dio, because I didn't like him very much).

Metallica and Slayer are Thrash.

I suppose I should have added Classic & Glam, because the rest of the artists are those.

Which begs the question:

What happened to Death, Black, Progressive, Power, Speed, Stoner, Industrial, Folk, Neo-Classical, Nu, or Groove Metal? Why do we see over half of the poll choices taken by Classic, when there are so many other genres unrepresented?

That was my point.

I don't care for Dio much either, but I never considered what i'd heard of him doom...But anyway, i'm not sure on the doominess of Sabbath - while they're arguably the prime influence on that genre (and stoner metal), it's only certain songs that are truly remniscient of it (eg. Black Sabbath, Electric Funeral...) I can't compare any given Candlemass album to an early Sabbath album and say "this is definitely the same scene", because I think doom was an evolution of certain aspects of Sabbath rather than a direct continuation.

I suppose. But then it begs the question; what do you pick out of each of those genres? Each of those have more than one fairly well known and respected band (within their specific genres, anyway)...you'd only get people bitching "BUT WHY IS MAYHEM UP THERE AND BATHORY NOT?!?!?!111". It's impossible to make "favourite album" polls and satisfy everyone. Threads like this are better without them.

Agreed. I think the best possible tactic would have been to do it in three rounds: Nomination, Elimination, and Final, just like we've done other polls in the past, since that means that the poll is actually indicitive of a "favorite" album for the forum, rather than a favorite amongst the pollster's favorites.

But I'm biased, because not only are none of those my favorite albums, I don't even like any of the albums up there.

Depends on what you consider "metal". I think most people would say Sabbath's selftitled record...that's my opinion anyway, although there are perhaps borderline cases like Blue Cheer that wouldn't be classified as metal by todays standards.

Wiki credits Zeppelin with doing it first, but I think that one's really up for debate.

The transition between heavy blues and heavy metal is a very gradual one.

This is probably the best poll, as far as choices, that Ive seen in a while.

Kudos to the OP.

However, GNR....not metal.

Out of the ones selected, I chose Slayer, "Reign in Blood".

But I will have you all know it KILLED me not to choose Black Sabbath.
However, half of Sabbaths "Paranoid" isnt so good (for Sabbath), and contains the ones like "Iron Man, War Pigs, Paranoid".

Some of Sabbaths worst songs.

The other half, however, the one that has Hand of Doom, and Electric Funeral, kicks much ass.

So taking that into consideration, the only other two choices were Metallica and Slayer.

While both these albums are some of the best metal albums ever recorded, the production of "Reign" is somewhat better than "MoP", and certainly betetr than anything Slayer had done previously.
Puppets has better songs, but overall "Reign" is just more powerful of an album.

I would also like to add that unlike some, I only went with those choices selected.

I did not pick my own personal favorite metal album.

Cuz then it would have definaty been a Sabbath album.

If the question is what ten I would pick for a public poll... I honestly can't answer. I'd have to add Paranoid, but I'd try to make sure that Dream Theater got a slot, that modern Pop Metal got mentioned at least (for better or for worse, it still has the characteristsics of metal). Other than that, I'd be stranded, because my taste in Metal falls out of the mainstream.

If you're asking what my top ten metal albums are...
1. Angra - Holy Land
2. Symphony X - The Odyssey
3. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
4. Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 2: Scences from a Memory
5. Machinae Supremacy - Deus Ex Machinae
6. Michael Romeo - The Dark Chapter
7. Yngwie Malmstein - Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E-minor (Yes, that's geeky. I still love it)
8. KMFDM - Angst
9. Korpiklaani - Spirit of the Forest
10. Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth

But I'm a neo-classicist, so my taste is at the very least obscure, and I wouldn't expect many people to share it.

I say metal was conceived by The Who during a live show.

On the album "Live at Leeds", the song "Young Man Blues".

If thats not metal, nothing is.

I voted Screaming for Vengance not because it's the only metal album on the list I've owned, it's the only metal album I've ever owned.

Obviously not a metal head. But my uncle gave it to me along with Dark Side of the Moon. That one had a more lasting effect, but the Judas Priest album did grow on me, and it does cause a bit of childhood nostalgia.

Why do we see over half of the poll choices taken by Classic, when there are so many other genres unrepresented?Well... I would certainly classify Megadeth as speed metal, especially their earlier stuff. Also, so-called "nu-metal" isn't metal. The word you're looking for on that one is "crap".

I'm not sure what I'd pick as my true favorite over all, but of the options on the poll, I'm gonna have to go with Motörhead.

But, seriously... no Luca Turilli? No Manowar? No Anthrax? No Blue Öyster Cult? No Ygnwie Fucking Malmsteen? Meh.

Oh, also, I'm thrilled to see people mentioning Dream Theater, but I can't say that I agree with the choice of Metropolis part 2: Scenes From A Memory. I'd probably pick Images and Words.

Out of the ones listed, I'd go with Master of Puppets.

I may be flayed alive for this, but I've never been able to listen to Paranoid, due simply to the fact that the sound on it is thin and terrible. Because of this, I like Black Sabbath's first album and Master of Reality better (the latter is in my opinion, their best album).

MoP is one of the best records ever imho... sadly completely listened to death and now untouched for years :p

other favourite metal albums of mine would be:
Iced Earth: Alive In Athens (3 CD live set of sheer awesomeness)
Bolt Thrower: For Victory
Alice In Chains: Dirt
Testament: Days of Darkness
Exodus: Another Lesson In Violence
Korn: Issues
Iron Maiden: Brave New World (yeah that album rocked)
Megadeth: tough call but i prefer Youthanasia
In Flames: Clayman

there's probably others but i think that covers a fair few of my favourite styles of metal :)

Well I think Maiden's Killers is far better than Number of the Beast, Sabbath's debut better than Paranoid, Motorhead's No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith (a live album but hey) better than Ace of Spades, and Priest's Stained Class better than Screaming for Vengeance (only just though!) Holy Diver has an awesome title track, but the rest of the album's not up to much. Personally I could never really get into Slayer, AC/DC, or Megadeth, and GnR ARENT metal. Therefore I went for Master of Puppets (despite the fact I prefer Kill 'Em All!) I also witnessed the whole thing at Download this year, and it is truly a classic.

If the list wasn't there for me though it'd be a close call between Helloween's Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1, Maiden's Killers, Avenged Sevenfold's Waking the Fallen (yes those of you've who've only ever heard City of Evil and didn't really like it you must listen to this one instead. I find most people have a closed mind about A7X because they're now seen as 'mainstream' but their earlier albums really are magnificent), Dragonforce's Valley of the Damned, Mercyful Fate's Melissa, or maybe Mastodon's Leviathan (although I haven't heard Blood Mountain yet).

8. Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance

I'll do a top ten as well...cause I'm bored and it's always fun...

IN ORDER: For once...

1. In Flames - Colony
2. Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth (Not really "metal"...but it's my list, damnit!)
3. Fear Factory - Demanufacture
4. Blind Guardian - Live (I need more music like this, as it fucking rocks)
5. Tool - Aenima
6. Sevendust - Self-titled
7. Mudvayne - L.D. 50
8. System of a Down - Self-titled
9. Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin
10. Stabbing Westward - Darkest Days (Again, not really "metal")

As for the poll...I voted for Sabbath...mainly since they are the only band in the poll that I have seen live.

10. Stabbing Westward - Darkest Days (Again, not really "metal")Listen to Ungod. Much better; more metal.

You mean Adam Curry, former Host of Headbanger's Ball?

Not Tim Curry, the actor who starred in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

:embarrassed:

Shoot. No more posting w/o coffee. ;)

I've heard none of these!
Go buy some. Start with Metallica or Slayer.
Indeed i shall.
Meh, my top 10...one album from each band, just for fun:

1. Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
2. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
3. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
4. Candlemass - Nightfall
5. Sunn O))) - Black One
6. Sleep - Sleep's Holy Mountain
7. Tool - Aenima (yes, it counts. Fuck off.)
8. Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance
9. Mastodon - Leviathan
10. Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (The wildcard...I just got into it, but i'm liking it a lot at the moment.)

Could easily name more, but eh.

All right, a metal top ten (in no particular order):

Metallica - Metallica
Cradle of Filth - Cruelty and the Beast
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption
Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
Carcass - Swansong
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Motörhead - Overkill
Sentenced - Frozen
Megadeth - So Far So Good...So What?I can't believe I made the glaring omission of The Plasmatics' Coup d'Etat. Insert that instead of Sentenced.

Old school Metallica is what got me started. Master is a truly great album. I used to like Justice better - no Burton and you can barely pick out Newstead, but the lyrics are really cool. Eye of the Beholder is a great song, and so is the title track on that album.

I'm sad to admit that some of the bands and songs thrown out by other posters are unfamiliar to me. Considering that I like almost everything mentioned that I am familiar with (and love much of it), you have all supplied me with quite a bit of music searching to do!

I'll be bookmarking this thread now...

I liked ....And Justice for All better than Master of Puppets. However, old school Metallic simply dominates all other choices anyway. ;)
I bought Master of Puppets on Saturday and i saw And Justice For all.
Black is meant to be their best one...
I am Aware that St Anger is a piece of shit.

Black is meant to be their best one...It depends. If you're a pure metalhead, you won't especially like the Black Album, you would like MoP or RtL. Since I am not a pure metalhead, I like the Black Album best, though RtL is a close second.

Haha, I love it when metal mixes with the mainstream and all it's misconceptions are mooted by music maniacs!

As a metal music reviewer, I agree that this list is severely limited in scope and only covers the traditional aspect of this diverse genre. I thought I was on crack when I didn't see at least one Dream Theater album in there - same goes for Opeth and Dark Tranquillity for that matter. (No Helloween - Keepers of the Seven Keys, Part II? HELLO?!) But from an outsider looking in (or a casual metal fan) seems like a "fair" enough list to have.

Well, to be fair, you only get so many choices when making a poll.

You know what kind of qualifications you need to be a "Metal Music Reviewer"

a cd player, and an opinion.

Mine says, that while Dream Theater are incredibly talented, and not incapable of writing a good tune, that it borders on pretentious wankery, and long drawn-out soloing the likes that make even good musicians like Vai, Satriani and Yngvie Malmsteen unpleasant to some ears. (Impelliteri, anyone?)

Too damn much.

Like overseasoning a recipe.

like a metal version of Yes.

Good band....but...same thing as above.

Besides, tastes are so subjective, how can you ever really determine whats Good and Not-Good?

Most influential for me was Iron Maiden's Fear Of The Dark which got it all started for me.

Then, of course, Black Sabbath's Paranoid which I greatly appreciate to this day. Metallica has lost its edge after (some might argue with) their Black Album.

Blind Guardian wasn't mentioned AFAIK, so that's another one I like listening to. And powermetal à la Manowar (yes, I know...) :D

But it's really hard to pin down just one single favorite metal album...

Um...

I disagree... the self-titled (black) album in my opinion is 4th best at most, behind Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning and ...And Justice for All. Don't get me wrong, it's a great album, but when compared to the masterpieces that preceded it, the self titled album isn't all that remarkable.

Yeah, until i hear all 4, i'll be reserved on that.
But in saying that, St Anger was described as going back to thir original albums, i thought it was messy and pretty much shit.
I didn't believe the comparrison though.

At work i realised what RtL stood for.
Ride the Lighting.
