14 arrested in anti-terror raids

Police have arrested 14 men in a series of dramatic anti-terror raids targeting the alleged recruitment, training and encouraging of people to take part in terrorist acts.

The men, who are thought to be mainly young British Muslims of Pakistani origin, were held in London, with several arrested at a Chinese restaurant in the Borough area of the city.

Detectives are carrying out searches at at a large number of residential properties across London - running into double figures.

The men were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 after months of surveillance involving Scotland Yard's Anti-Terrorist Branch and MI5. They are now in custody at Paddington Green high security police station.

Security sources said the investigation was focusing on the alleged recruitment and radicalisation of young British Muslims and the facilitation of training for terrorism purposes.

It is not yet clear whether the men were part of one group, or disparate groups who knew each other.

Police have only just started the searches and have not ruled out the possibility that the investigation may take them elsewhere once their inquiries are complete.

Sources said there was no evidence that any kind of terror attack was imminent, although police have not disclosed why it was felt necessary to intervene at this point.

"Part of the investigation will focus on the alleged training, recruitment and encouraging of others to take part in terrorist acts," a source said. "It is very early days and we do not know where this will take us until we do all the searches."

However, another security source went further and suggested those allegedly involved may not just have been recruiting and training suspects, but actually plotting an attack. There has been no official confirmation of this.

Arrested two more in Manchester..

LONDON (Reuters) - British police said on Saturday they had arrested 16 men in two separate anti-terrorism operations just three weeks after uncovering a suspected plot to bring down U.S.-bound airliners over the Atlantic.

Fourteen of the men were held in London in an overnight operation that a police source said focused on suspected training and recruitment of terrorists.

Anti-terrorist police in Manchester arrested two men early on Saturday and were carrying out three searches but this was not linked to the London arrests, police there said.

The arrests came after the head of London police's anti-terrorist branch, Peter Clarke, said on Friday that police were keeping tabs on thousands of British Muslims who they suspect may be involved in or support terrorism -- higher than previous official estimates.

The BBC said 12 arrests were made at a Chinese restaurant in south London that police in riot gear raided on Friday night. It said the probe may be linked to alleged terrorist training camps in Britain.

Police said in February they had uncovered evidence of such camps while other reports have spoken of militants going for adventure training to forge closer ties.

Two of the four Muslim suicide bombers who killed 52 people on London transport in July last year are believed to have gone on a team-building white-water rafting holiday in Wales weeks before the attacks.

Cabby picked up on terror charges

Cabby seized by anti-terror squad

A TERROR suspect arrested in north Manchester is a taxi driver and the doting father of two children, according to neighbours.

As Asian News went to press police were still questioning 27-year-old Adeeb Ahmed who was arrested in his cab outside his home on Elmfield Street, Cheetham Hill.

His cab was seized and the suspect's wife and two children were escorted from the scene by officers, though they were not arrested.
It is understood the arrested man was not being questioned about the alleged plot to bomb passenger jets over the Atlantic or the July 7 London bombings.

Police said it was "in connection with an ongoing investigation acting on intelligence".
The suspect is thought to be a British-born Muslim of Pakistani origin.

More on the police keeping tabs part

Asked roughly how many people in the UK police were looking at in the belief that they may be involved directly or indirectly in terrorism, Mr Clarke said: "I don't want to go down the numbers game, I don't think it's helpful.

"All I can say is that our knowledge is increasing and certainly in terms of broad description, the numbers of people who we have to be interested in are into the thousands."

When pressed further on the figure, he added: "As I say, that includes a whole range of people, not just terrorists, not just attackers, but the people who might be tempted to support or encourage or to assist."

How sad that chickens are now roosting at home. Winston Churchill, who has the last laugh now...

Do you think they might actually get a conviction this time?

I dunno. I am not aware of what constitutes illegal in UK, is voicing support to terrorist causes illegal? is hanging around with a buddy who is a member of a shady group which plans to do something illegal? is knowing your friend went for terrorist training and not telling police illegal? I dunno what the anti-terror laws are in UK.

I am merely amused by the turn of events. About 60 years ago Churchill assured Jinnah that he ‘‘espoused the right of Moslems and the Depressed Classes to their fair share of life and power. I feel that it is most important that the British Army should not be used to dominate the Moslems, even though the caste Hindus might claim numerical majority in a constituent assembly’’. And now the children of Churchill and Jinnah are being arrested in UK left and right as suspects of terrorism. I dunno about others but this is fricking hilarious for me.
