The Best Band
With the inabilty too fall asleep, along with the absence of a social life, I have decided too make this thread.
There is no best band. However, I'll shamelessly promote Agalloch and Carissa's Wierd.
I'm glad the last option was there.

As great "all round bands" go, I promote John Butler Trio and The Gathering shamelessly, I think anyone can enjoy them, given the chance. But pfft, too many genres, too many artists to name one single band that I think is exceptional.

Aye, they were excellent at Leeds Fest.
Where are the bands like Feeder, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snow Patrol, Razorlight....(continue this list as you see fit)

I've seen them. They were okay next to some of the other crap at that particular festival.

I believe the OP's intent was to discern which of these bands we consider the best, not that these are in fact teh best bands EVAR ;)

For that matter I don't see any good bands up there.
In fact, I'm not sure I see any music up there.
*Sigh* It's cold and lonely for those of us who despise pop. Except perhaps here on NSG where we're the majority. :p

There is no best band. However, I'll shamelessly promote Agalloch and Carissa's Wierd.Actually, there is. It's "Die Ă„rtzte". One of the synonyms for the band is "the best band in the world". They aren't necessarily my favorite, but they are the best. :)

Uh. I guess Franz Ferdinand is the best up there, but...
I'll second The Clash, also The Ramones, The Police, Talking Heads, Santana, The Who, King Crimson (careful with their catalogue, though, they put out equal amounts of great music and shit music).
And the anti-prog movement be damned, I'll say 70's Yes and Genesis, both great bands in their prime. And DOWN with John Mayer, the overrated dumbass.
That list sucks. The Doors FTW.

Pop Punk, if done well, is class (All Time Low etc). Fall Out Boy are simply abysmal.

*shrug* I like some emo. Taking Back Sunday and Finch are/were good. And modern AFI is pretty emo too...
I also like what was originally considered emo: hardcore punk, sung by crybabies. It's called Screamo nowadays, though.
Emo was good when it started back in the 80's. It was actually unique. Sure, it was still a bunch of crybabies, but at least each band wasn't an exact carbon clone of the the band next to them.
Emo was never good... Different, whilst not always bad, certainly isn't always good, and emo's just a big cesspit of the worst self-indulgent crap, and has been from the start.

By "Good" I mean "Hell of a lot better than it is now".
I won't argue on that one. At least there was a time when it was original.

Where's Motion City Soundtrack?
(OK, I guess most people would hate them too but to call the list up there uninspiring would be kind).
Why all the emo-hate anyway? At least emo bands don't run around singing about killing people (well, not normally) which seems to be the entire purpose of the current hardcore/metal scene...
Hardcore and metal are teh suck as well as emo. Get some psychadelic rock and just disappear into a cloud of fuzzy love and peace. :D

Find the album "Red" by King Crimson. It's as heavy as metal, but completely different in form and execution. Great heavy guitar/bass/saxophone jamming that deserves its own category. Hell, Kurt Cobain said it was his favorite album ever! That should be enough of a recommendation.
Kurt Cobain= least favourite junkie.

Well, I was wandering around Pere Lachaise when I encountered a bunch of stoners sitting on a tombstone (presumably his, I couldn't see the name). Does that count?
