Leaving home for the first time...

...so I guess this is happening! Which is a bit wierd but so the right time.
P is leaving the nest! Today infact. Most of my stuff is packed up and it kinda feels like I'm going on holiday, but at the same time I'm saying goodbye to my friends. Just odd.
I've been told there will be one other girl in the house who moved in yesterday, I haven't met her and I'm praying she's nice, maybe a bit like me, or just not a wierdo!
Wondered what the situation was for everyone here when they moved away for the first time. Mine is Uni. I'm wondering how people got on with the first people they lived with and the such!?
*also as a little side note, the novelty hasnt quite worn off...I've grown some pink!!!!...*http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/probe_me/pinkhair2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v297/probe_me/pinkhair.jpg

Are you living in a dorm? You should get together a folder with all your medical info so if there is an emergency and your parents aren't right there people will know your prescriptions, past surgeries, allergies and etc. ;)

The wierdos part is sort of a given. I don't think normal people get roommates in College (or Uni, whatever) the normal ones get shunted off to an asylum somewhere and then you end up moving in with a guy who can (and will) projectile vomit at distances of 2-3 yards and another guy who irons his clothes . . . at 4 in the morning . . . every goddamn day.
Oh, how I hate him.

it'll probably work out quite nice, but playing roommate roulette is always just a little bit dodgy (though also an excellent way to meet new and different people). my favorite living arrangements have all been group-based. particularly in a place that has strange quirks to it, like a staircase to nowhere.
...so I guess this is happening! Which is a bit wierd but so the right time.

Ok, now that that's over... Trust my second-hand experience. Leaving home isn't that bad. Once you get used to your new place, it's like you never left home.
Aw thats awesome I've heard so many people say that. I have 4 lovely years of it ahead :DNot too dampen your mood too much, but the worst times of my life have occured at Uni. But it is fun otherwise.

I had a fabulous time at uni. My first roommate and I got along great, probably because we were friends but didn't hang out in the same social circles and had completely different classes. So we had fun, but didn't do everything together.

I ended up flatting with a mate, who was cool, his classmate, who was also ok (though very homophobic and bigotted, but if you ignored his tirades he was fine - esp in the 'paying the rent on time', 'doing his share of the housework and cooking duties' bit).
And.
An unemployed clown.
Not just any unemployed clown, mind you. But an unemployable clown. One who showered and changed his clothes once a fortnight whether he needed to or not. And wouldn't wipe, prefering the cloth of his underwear to do the work for him. How did we know he didn't wipe? Because he didn't flush.
Every six weeks, come rain or shine, he would wash his 4 pairs of underwear.
Never his clown outfit though, which he practised in the garage daily.
You have no idea how stinky a man can get. My mate offered to film him for promotion purposes, and told me he was gagging and dry-retching from 20 feet away.

I couldn't do that. I'm very much a neat freak, and I sleep so light that my neighbor's cat wakes me up about every other night meowing outside. I could live with another person, but not the average university type roommate. Luckily, when I started university I was old enough (22) that they didn't make me live in the dorms. Especially those dorms, because at 2:00am I could hear music from a block away. I would have been put in prison for mass murder and crimes against humanity.

one time in the dorms some people were running down the hall unravelling duct tape (which makes that nice ripping noise). at 3:30 am. on a tuesday. so i opened my door, flipped out my knife, slashed their tape, and went back inside. they stopped running around after that.

i moved away for the first time to go to Uni as well. Cardiff uni in the summer of 2003.
i just hope it goes better for you than it did for me... my flatmates were all a bunch of wankers, i had a terrible dorm room where the 3am army of drunken bastards coming back from clubs would wake me up every night by racing shopping trolleys just outside my window, i had a practicing DJ in the room above me who had no consideration for how loud he fucking was, and i wound up a clinically depressed pothead by the end of the year :(
Hey P! You're gonna have a great time, I'm sure :) But good luck regardless!
My first experience moving out and in with other people was... strange. I lived for a year with one guy, two girls and two cats.
Now, one of those girls were incapable of cleaning up after herself. So it was tiresome and anoying to live with her - her mom had to come in and clean up after her at least three times during the year, she left her sex-toys in the bathroom, she hardly ever washed the dishes, she never washed or clean her room (even if she did smoke inside)
She herself were clean however. She took showers often - but didn't bother to cover up after showering, walking around naked or with an open robe instead.
She was a loon. :)
The other people were decent enough though ;)
And disregarding the living-situation that year, uni was the best years of my life... thus far :D

When I first moved out I mover from SD to CO to go to school. The school didn't have dorms, but they did have a program where four people could rent a two bedroom apartment. I moved in and two of my roommates were racist. The other one had some mental problems with depretion and a family history of bi-polar. I moved out into my own place and my boyfriend moved with me from SD. He moved in his brother too and about 8 months into it they locked me out of my house, stole my car and went out to some bar. They came home drunk and beat me up. I had no where to go after that and was forced to quite school and go back to SD. Despine by ex's probation in CO, he fallowed me and still two years later I still have problems with him. But don't let this scare you, being on your own is a lot of fun and a bit scary at times. I just got bad luck you could say!

Congrats on getting entry!!!
I moved to the UK from the US when I was 14 (sorta ran away from my old mans)...then moved out of my Mums when I was 15...
One thing I learned is that the best thing to do is just talk to people (I think someone already touched on this).
I've been living in shared houses since '84 (or been on the road) and yes you will meet nutters and you will also meet people who will become your dearest friends (and usually lots more of the latter than the former!). But you won't know unless you interact. Something tells me you won't have a problem with that! A sense of humour is important as is being able to say no.
Always read contracts and get to know your rights.
Keep to a budget....seriously. Work out your week expenses (food, bills, rent, travel, books, education stuff and also fun money) and stay within that budget.
If you can spare the time maybe get a part time job in the Uni or join a Uni club...
Most important things - HAVE FUN, GET INVOLVED AND STUDY HARD! :)
and call yer parents at least once a week...beleive me....they will appreciate it!

(was in Bristol last weekend...could have done with a local guide LOL)
Get ready for the best time of your life....
Aw *hugs*
You were in Bristol!?!?! What part? And why! :p
Some good advice there. I will be working part time as much as I can, because I cannot get a grant this year. So I will be supporting myself. This year is like a foundation year before my degree! So I'm in for 4 years of higher education :D
Enrolled this morning, met and chatted to some of my course mates, they seem nice. A few people were very quiet, and others already knew people there. But I think I'll be fine. Once I'm in there, you can't shut me up, I am a rather loud social one me. I have a 'what have I got to lose' attitude. And I find it works :)
Thank you all for posting in here :p I appreciate it.

Uni is indeed one of the best time of our lives, as is the leaving home to attend it! Things to watch out for, though: Money (in keeping that damned loan and overdraft under control, just a little restraint will help a lot); Slackers (don't follow their example unless you are one of the lucky people who can somehow pull a first out one weeks actual work a year...get stuck in to the studies); Slobs (the domestic version of the Slacker...make sure they pull their weight in communal matters); Scallies (depending on where your student house will be, you might have trouble from the local tribes if they take pleasure in harassing students...York's Tang Hall crew ensured a long years worth of repairs to our rented house, but if you're on a campus you should be alright...).
Otherwise, don't be fretting about leaving the nest. On your own two feet, stand and be, yo! ;)

Aw yo!
I have no loan or overdraft so if I don't keep an eye on my money, I will simply have none! lol
I was sat on the beach yesterday and I was so happy :) I'm glad I've moved. Hope this year continues like it has done!

Have fun and enjoy your freedom.
Now, the only, and most important warning I can give you: Do your grocery shopping regularly!!!
The fridge gets empty astonishingly fast and there's nothing worse than an empty stomach on an empty fridge.
That said, I'll order some pizza today (for I was too lazy to go shopping yesterday and on Sunday, the stores are closed....).

yeah....road warrior me! LOL
I do recall thinking I was in Berlin at one point with all the building sites. But we were mainly around the Youth Hostel area...that was pretty nice. I guess Bristol has undergone a huge amount of change since its become a popular place to live...
What do you think of Portsmouth?

The pizza was great, by the way. Which leads me to another thought:
Make sure you always have some money stashed away somewhere to be able to pay for those "emergency rations". With spare change I barely managed to come by today ;)

I'm really liking Portsmouth. I've visited the beach a few times, my housemate and his friends took me down there last night about midnight for an adventure :) we walked around the castle and stuff. It was cool. I do love the sea. Really don't think the novelty will wear off. This week feels like its been a month Ive had so much to do. Feel like ive been here for ages, which I guess is good.
I start tomorrow, have a few drawings to complete today and then woo. I'm gonna make my sammiches tonight like a good girl and then I'll be set :D
It was fun, and my first roommate was alright. Don't worry about it...you'll end up coming home after university anyway, because everything is so expensive. I've been home since spring of '04, and I'll have to stay here until I graduate from my masters program in spring of '08. Gah!
