No confidence vote sought against Rumsfeld

Well, in the attempt to stay on the attack Democrats are attempting to seek a no confidence vote against Rumsfeld and to demand his resignation. I suppose some will see this as an attempt to get votes in November and I can see how this is part of the strategy. But Rumsfeld as botched the Iraq war so spectacularly that I can completely understand the attempt. Even some Republicans are criticising Rumsfeld's job. I wonder how this is going to play out...

And that would change what's happenning in Iraq how?

General Casey has already said that we're 12 to 18 months away from a complete handover to Iraqi forces.

And Bush says that he'll go with what the military commanders recommend.

Sounds like election babble to me.

I also seem to remember that Bush says that we won't leave Iraq with their forces unprepared which given how things are currently that very well may remain unchanged. There seems no plan whatsoever to stop the violence there and frankly I don't trust the military generals who are also incapable of halting the violence.

Firing Rumsfeld won't change anything.

It will make a lot of people feel better though.

Wasn't there a group of Iraqi soliders who attacked their fellow troops when the British left a base in Basra? They pretty much switched sides and plundered the base if I recall correctly. The loyal troops couldn't even secure one base, let alone a city, province or country.

(These Iraqi troops seem as reliable as the Roman legions in the 3rd century; every few years, they'd rebel and declare their commander Emperor.)

Perhaps someone competent will be brought in. Someone who will admit their mistakes and actually work to change that and improve on the situation.

Rumsfeld should have resigned after Abu Ghraib.

But now it really doesn't matter. As someone else said, it's all about politics.
