Anime thread o' doomz!
[NS:]Harmonia Mortus Redux

NS had one last time I was on, but that was a while ago and it seems to be lacking one now :P
So, basically this is a thread for the discussion of anime, likes and dislikes thereof. If you totaly dont like anime and feel that it needs to be destroyed, feel free to make a thread stating your feelings, but dont post 'em here.
Anyway, just to get things started, what kind of anime do people on NS general like?
Personally, I enjoy serious anime, provided it doesnt take itself TOO seriously and turn into a giant angst-fest. A good example of the latter would be Witch Hunter Robin, which I only watched once because it was on Adult Swim. It also made bad use of CG for random things, which was even worse :P
'Good' for me is stuff like Trigun and Ruroni Kenshin, the occasional humour to help lighten the mood a bit and apparently prevents everybody from dressing in black and cutting themselves. I also occasionally dabble in the less serious sort. A recent aquisition for me was Saber Marionette J and J to X, both of which I enjoyed and would recommend to many people.
Of course SMJ's ending is a bit, ah, cheesy, but once its explained in J to X it makes a bit more sense. It was very sad though.
Word of warning though, J Again is pure fanservice, dont watch it. Especially after the rather good dub of SMJ. Apparently sometime between J and J Again Otaru (the main charecter) went on hormones.
I personally DONT like Naruto for some reason, perhaps its the funky ultra-fast/ultra-slow pacing, or maybe its just the general idiocy.
Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop sort of fall in between, they both have their good and bad moments/episodes, although I like Samurai Champloo a bit more for some reason, possibly because of the great way Jin and Mugen bounce off of each other.
EDIT:
Oh, yes, and Outlaw Star is the king of all anime.
And, at the risk of being skewered by the 'dont you prefer real women' people, Aisha is hot ;)

I'm a fan of progressive and philosophical Anime. Ergo Proxy, Noein, Paranoia Agent, Black Lagoon, and other anime that have the litterary value of the great works of litterature.
Not that I have any problem at all with big explosions. Those're cool too.

See, Im the sort of person who hasnt heard of any of those...except Paranoia Agent, and I suspect I only know of that one because it was on Adult Swim. Didnt like it much though, too slow for me.
I like good sci-fi anime like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, but I loath the cliche cookie-cutter anime with shitty self-perpetuating storylines.
Couldn't get into Naruto.
my friend is showing me "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" Weird mixed up Shit.... the episodes are all out of order and it was purposely done that way. the gist of it is that a school girl creates a club where she can go and investigate strange mysteries, look for aliens, espers and whatnots... not knowing that the Aliens, Espers and other strange phenoms are also looking for her.
I also like Vandredd, Chobits, Captain Tylor, Catseye, and several others.
Including Madlax and Azumanga Diaoh... so a whole range of em...
oh, and I cannot, absolutely cannot stand Dragonball in any incarnation.
I wanna test a thesis of mine, concerning Anime... specifically, Irrisponsible Captain Tylor... if anyone's interested.
Black Lagoooooon!
As well as Ghost in the Shell, FLCL, Hajime no Ipo, Gungrave and Big O are a few that come to mind of the top of my head.

Adult Swim is a bad source for Anime. They only have the really crappy ones. Subs from current Japanese shows are much better.
Ergo Proxy is a philosophical story that considers the possibility of a self-aware Turing Machine.
Noein is a story which deeply discusses the effects of the quantum world on the perceived world... It also has huge-ass explosions.
Black Lagoon is a pirate anime which attacks modern Japanese culture, Naziism, Racism, and the difference between guilt by association and guilt by action.
Paranoia Agent is about slowly going insane.
Cartoon Network butchers innocent anime on their cutting block of censorship and mistranslation. :)

No, never heard of them....I just like them to have a definitive conclusion, by the time the first episode is aired the last episode should be finished. Not like inuyasha which keeps being drawn out forever to milk as much money as possible out of it ;P

Madlax and Noir definately end. the twists in the story tho, are inventive.
also it features Chicks with Guns... another formula that is difficult to screw up. :D

Check online dude... there are many clubs that distribute fan subbed tapes.
I saw Initial D, Vampire Hunter D, and many more before they were translated.
I'm a big fan of anime that can be serious, but chooses not to. Like Slayers, Sailor Moon, etc.
I'm also a big fan of the zany for the sake of zany stuff. Like Di-Gi Charat and Dragon Half.
I can not, under any circumstances, watch Neon Genesis without throwing something at the TV set.
I'd like to know what the people here think of the Azumanga Daioh anime? I'm a huge fan of the manga and am wondering whether it's worth forking over for the anime...

Sounds interesting, I may check of those out :)
But yes, I only watch the CN/Adult Swim stuff due to limitations on harddrive space on my laptop. Sure, I COULD move stuff over to my desktop, but I would have to do it 1gb at a time :P
Censorship and mistranslation I dont mind so much (in moderation, unlike, say, Robotech), its when they screw the voices up that I get annoyed.

Ive got issues with vampire anime.
Y'see, one of my 'friends' in High School claimed to be a vampire, possibly because she watched too much anime.
So, basically when I hear 'Vampire' and its not connected to an early 20th century horror movie, I think 'Angst' and 'stupid', and often 'crappy plot', and rarely, 'stupid excuse for blood-hentai mix'.

plus if you think about it, all vampire stories are based on one novel, Dracula by Bram Stoker(which is really good BTW) totally unoriginal.

I plan to run the modern classics:
Mai Hime
Gundam W
Black Lagoon
at least 2 Miyazaki films
School Rumble
Do you have any recomendations for universally classic peices so that I can appease both the fangirls and the "we wanna see things explode" fans?

I also forgot to mention Record of the Lodoss War, Im currently on episode 4. Thus far the plot is good and the charecters are pretty enjoyable. It also manages to be comic without being silly (although 'Welcome to Lodoss Island' is on some plane of Kawaii that I dare not comprehend).
My only issue with it is the 3 frame per second animation, although everything is very well drawn. I suppose that is the tradeoff with most older anime...well drawn or crap frame rate. There are some exceptions though :P

Many, many thanks. I'll make a point of having my downloads/screening guy get all of those.
I'm still trying to make up for last year, which was a bit of a disaster.
After running:
- Gunbuster 1 (the first sub... Felt like constant "All Your Base") for 4 episodes, until we realized we had gotten the uncensored version (oops)
- Tsubasa Chronicles... The whole thing. If you haven't seen it, count yourself lucky.
- Mahou Sensei Negima twice (it was OK the first time...)
- Advent Children umpty-million times (That was really good... The first time)
- A bunch of really stupid Chibi anime, which were absolutely awful.
All in one year, I have a lot to rebuild in the anime collection (it wasn't my fault last year! I swear!).
About my only problem is that I know one of the fan-peoples is going to force me to run EVA at least once. :headbang:

Basically, you just play a really bad anime (this is great for bad dubs), and everyone is totally free to make as many wisecracks about it as possible. (In the tradition of the much-beloved Mystery Science Theater 3000.) We absolutely ripped the dub of "Now and Then; Here and There" to pieces, as well as a subtitled version of this absolutely atrocious Chinese Dragonball movie.

The stopped when they realized that only the board members were coming to club (I wasn't getting up at 5:00 in the morning to go to club for that.).
Furi-Kuri is a possibility for this year's club, although I worry that I could scare off the fangirl population with it.

FuriKuri and Excel Saga. I love a series where the main character DIES in the first 5 minutes of the show. ;)
Have you seen Yu Yu Hakusho then? I think the main character in that dies within the first 30 seconds XD
And ouch, Sensible. That sounds a little like what happened to CSUN Anime for awhile. The roster was split into two hour-and-a-half blocks every Friday night- each week the members in attendence would vote for three shows to watch the following week in the first block, while the second block would be three shows set for the entire semester. We had this obnoxious voting block that adored the really stupid cutesy anime. >_< Much dislike for Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar.
You might look into I My Me Strawberry Eggs also. You can't go wrong with crossdressing schoolteacher comedy!
this is totally off-topic, but I just realized that Ghost in The Shell is an alluration to Gilbert Ryle's description of Descartes' Dualist theory. Descartes says that the mind and body are polar opposites, and that primitive parts of our brain control the physical aspects of our body....he calls our consciousness a ghost in the machine. Meaning that its merely an imprint on our primitive brain.
so the major from Ghost in the shell, has a robotic body but a biological brain that can be detached from its body just like the seperate mind and body of dualism

Yup.
That's the reason that I love progressive anime. Ergo Proxy is much the same (although it looks into Turing Theory, rather than Cartesian Dualism).

My favorites include:
- Shoujo Kakumei Utena
- Kino's Journey
- XXXHolic
- Ouran High School Host Club
- Excel Saga
- Slayers
- The Rose of Versailles (also known as Lady Oscar)
- X (TV-series)
- Saint Seiya
Other series that I like are Lain, Hellsing, Azumanga Daioh, Nadia, and a few others.
Many of the series I mentioned I own as fansubs, which I've found are usually far superior to licensed subs. It seems the big companies just don't want to put as much effort into it as people that do it for FREE. The best example of this that I've seen is Utena. They ruined large parts of the translation in the licensed version, and gave it horrible menus as well.

The extreme contrast between light-hearted to the point of silliness and extreme seriousness on Trigun turned me off the series.
Ruruoni Kenshin did it well because the silliness and seriousness was well proportioned and correctly timed. Though I couldn't stand him repeating that saying every time he made a statement. He never did that in Samurai X.

Okay, so it's not the worst dubbed anime, but to tell you the truth the voice acting and the words are always a bit off in my opinion. That, and it's just... Not really my cup of tea. I just don't like it plain and simple.
That and the show is about ninja's right? Ninjitsu, surpisingly enough, teaches methods of gathering information, non-detection, avoidance, and misdirection techniques. It also involves training in disguise, escape, concealment, archery, medicine, and explosives. Combat is an absolute last resort for ninjitsu practitioners.
The guys in Naruto engage in direct combat all the time! And they cast silly little jitsu magical effects. That, my dear friend, is not what a ninja does. The concept is ridiculous. The characters should all be samurai or something. That'd make a little more sense.

And this is possibly my favorite...

My exposure to anime has been very limited, but so far I've like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop the most. I also liked Ghost in the Shell. Gundam Wing, EVA and Escaflowne were all decent, but not great in my opinion. I still haven't decided if I like Berserk or not, and I'm still watching Noir so I don't know if I like that yet either.
One of my friends adores Naruto and keeps telling me to watch it, but I haven't had the chance yet. Not sure I want to, either, considering that most of my other friends that like anime detest that one.

Also, your friends have good taste.
Trigun's about a wandering killing machine called "Vash The Stampede" (though he rarely, if ever, kills anyone). Good writing with some intense action sequences, and some comedy thrown in.
Cowboy Bebop's a bit more involved. It's about three mercenaries who live on a space ship, hunting down wanted people to get loads of money... But they never seem to get their reward(s). It's very atmospheric with excellent writing and character development. The soundtrack is also very good, and even the overdubbing is great.

Trigun is about this gunslinger with a ridiculously huge bounty on his head. He is alternately a bumbling idiot or a kickass gunfighter; other characters include two insurance agents sent to follow him around, and this gunfighting priest (one of my favourite characters).
Cowboy Bebop is about a bounty hunter in space, but half the reason I love the show is because of the music and the storyline woven around Spike (the main character) and his past.

Those are just the cover stories.
Trigun is really about a plant-based cyborg trying to come to terms with the fact he isn't really human and with the deaths of his friends caused by him despite having no control over it.
Cowboy Bebop's underlying story is about Spike's relationship with Viscious and escape from the crime syndicate the Red Dragons, which has recurring roles in the cover storyline while whenver Viscious appears it has to deal with the underlying story.

I'm not a big anime fan( and nowhere as big as my psychotic otaku sister), but the ones I have watched:

Full Metal Alchemist (Mep, I think it is kind of stupid. Though this may be because my little sister fawns over Edward at every single oppurtinity)
Naruto (Don't get me started. Let's just say my sister's fawning over Sasuke is even worse than her fawning over Ed)
Bleach (Pretty good, and it introduced to High and Mighty Color)
and EVA(I'm sorry, I love EVA).

I'm in the middle of watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, which is the most depressing, horrifying television show I've ever seen. Meanwhile, I'm watching Zero no Tsukaima to counter-act Higurashi. Zero isn't the best show I've seen, but it's funny and doesn't take itself too seriously for a comedy with a dramatic underlying plot. Paranoia Agent was the most recent show I've see on Adult Swim. Probably the only show I've seen on Adult Swim too. Meanwhile, my favorite show of all is still the three original Tenchi series. Which is also probably the best dub that was ever done.
Beyond that the only animes I've seen are Neon Genesis, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Elfen Lied. The middle is the only one I'd gladly suggest to someone.
NOTE: If you do want to watch Neon Genesis, do not watch the dub. It was constantly raping my ears.

another anime i was obsessed with was the tenchi muyo/universe/whatever series.
loved the VG too.
My list:
Full Metal Alchemist - Really well written for such a long series. Not much on the old action scenes, but I found the story really engaging.
X/1999 - Pretty basic story, very pretty art, lots of character development (though a little too much mush for my tastes), but the fight scenes were perfectly executed, what of them there were.
Cowboy Bebop - It's all about the Music. Spike's underlying history and struggle serves as a broad narrative, but the entire anime is really about the expression of different styles of music in story form. And it works.
Trigun - What started as a fun, easy to watch piece became far too serious towards the end, and I guess I wasn't really in the mood to truly appreciate it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Mecha with warped judo-christian imagery, really. Not a fun watch, by any means, but certainly interesting, particularly with regards to the psychological failings of its entire cast.
Dragonball (0_o) - Having watched some of it in desperate boredom when all my friends decided to go home while I was left working over the summer in my uni town, the Android saga could actually have been worse. Fights seemed really rather dull at times though; especially when they just dissolved into throwing single barrels of huge energy waves at each other.
Chobits - Chi is cute. I want a persocom. 'nuff said.
Ranma 1/2 - Neat premise. Got a bit repetitive, but still good for a laugh.
Yakitate Japan - Melodramatic parody at its finest. It does a fantastic job of making fun of every aspect of Japanese culture (especially popular anime), though you do have to deal with an almost painfully overly melodramatic plot in between the gags.
School Rumble / Azumanga Daioh - Both cute little school-based shows. Heartily recommended to anyone just wanting a fun story.
Akira - Erm... Boom? The original apocalyptic, mutant psychic power and laser gun showdown. "Tetsuo!" and "Kaneda!", in steadily increasing volume, sums this up pretty well.
Rurouni Kenshin - Great up to 62 (I think it is); a good mix between light hearted comedy and serious tragedy. With swords. Stop there; it just tries to drag itself on after that. You could probably skip quite a few from the first 27 episodes too.
.Hack//Sign - I liked it. Then again, I was a bit of an MMORPG freak at the time. Not for everybody.
Gundam SEED - Wow, shiny laser battles. I loved its philosophical approach to war and the histories and struggles of its characters, though it didn't half drag on a bit to begin with, and the battle dialog was absolutely atrocious.
Gundam Wing - Didn't like as much as Seed for its philosophy or design, but it was a little bit faster paced, and stayed interesting from the beginning, at least.
Lastly, Naruto - Quirky and quite fun at times, and some of the battles were a good watch, but it just goes on and on, the main character is completely uninspiring and the whole plot seems far too convoluted.

Full Metal Panic!
also:
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu!
and
Full Metal Panic! Second Strike!I'm not sure if there is anything else I have watched that made me hate one of the characters (Chidori) so intensely. Funnily enough, the fumoffu series were the one that by far had the least of that effect on me, being so blatantly silly and throughoutly unserious. In the rest of the FMA series, the main character risks his life in a series of battles, over and over again, only to be near-constantly assaulted by a certain mindless, hypocritical, selfish moron, who has a complete lack of understanding regarding the wider situation of the events in the series. The main character's complete lack of reaction regarding the abuse he is subject to doesn't make it any better; when I had seen the end of the last series, I thought that were he to have the smallest amount of self-respect, he should commit suicide ASAP. As for Chidori, it's a shame that she didn't die; preferably slowly and painfully.
That said, the other aspects of the series make it worth a watch.

Sometimes I wish I were an anime drawing because my hair would be a lethal weapon. Also, I would be able to jump about two hundred feet. On the other hand, any time I went to tackle somebody, all these vapor trail lines would appear around me. Annoying. :p

That said, the other aspects of the series make it worth a watch.actually, its similar to Ranma.
if you watch Ranma 1/2, you get glimpses (even from early on) how Ranma truely feels about Akane. it's the little things, the gestures, his actions.
same with FMP. after the hijacking of the plane, you notice that while Chidori does maintain the selfish facade, she does back him up from time to time and even deferrs to him most times. the Abuse she reaps on him is usually caused when he does something 1) dangerous, 2) stupid, 3) embarrassing.
after all, he is supposed to be "undercover"
And probably the inspiration for LG. Or maybe LG inspired him
you never know... I have a friend who was called by "Anime America" a frightenly realistic Genam (Ranma 1/2) clone. his sister could be Nabiki come to life...

I'm taking a Japanese film class right now, and along with the live-action stuff we have to watch those three films and Nausicaa. It seems like those are really serious. I like Cowboy Bebop, especially for the great music, but the rest, I don't know.

How could anyone not love Samurai Champloo or Cowboy Bebop?
I'm personally a bigger fan of the latter, there is just something inherently cool about the mixing of hip-hop and samurai genres. If only the last episode had ended it properly, the series might have been near-perfect.

It's more like... Fanga. Not actually a doujinshi; more a comic in homage to manga.

Yes. Since, honestly, manga just means comics in Japan.
Of course I would probably find MT under the komiku at my local bookstore, assuming it had been translated into Japanese.
FuriKuri and Excel Saga. I love a series where the main character DIES in the first 5 minutes of the show. ;)
If you liked Excel (and can handle the general oddness) may I recomend Dokoro-chan?

I watch some anime, but I would hardly refer to myself as an anime fan, mostly due to my loathing of Japan.
What I find absolutely hilarious, though, is that most anime fans obtain the shows illegally, stealing money from the creators and distributors of the medium they claim to love.

errmmm. download any music/movies lately?
the fact is, most fans... infact all true fans and groups...
1) Stop distributing a title once it is confirmed to be released.
2) Don't charge for profit. most usually charge for the tape or tell people to supply their own tape. while Donations are welcome, they are not required.
3) Some legitamate companies, after getting the rights, will contact the fans and study their translations. if they are good enough, they will buy the rights from that person. (it happened to a friend of mine for a series that was released years ago.)
4) encourage people to pick up the Offical, Licenced versions.

Okay, so I just saw "Nana" in my film class two days ago. It's live action, so it doesn't quite belong in this thread, but it is based on a manga so I figure what's the difference. Anyway, it was pretty good based on the clips he showed and I find the main character very hot, which is weird because she's kind of a punkish character. Anyway.

I don't enjoy exorbitant fines. People are getting caught more and more lately. A programmer in California was fined 30,000 for one movie.

Any unauthorized distribution, whether for money or not, is a violation of copyright law as defined in the United States, and is essentially theft.
3) Some legitamate companies, after getting the rights, will contact the fans and study their translations. if they are good enough, they will buy the rights from that person. (it happened to a friend of mine for a series that was released years ago.)

I don't see how. Why pay when you can get something for free, until the law comes for you anyway?

2) Don't charge for profit. most usually charge for the tape or tell people to supply their own tape. while Donations are welcome, they are not required.Any unauthorized distribution, whether for money or not, is a violation of copyright law as defined in the United States, and is essentially theft.actually, until recently, it was only Copying and Distributing for PROFIT. it was only reworded a couple of years ago (5 I believe) to include any form of copying.
3) Some legitamate companies, after getting the rights, will contact the fans and study their translations. if they are good enough, they will buy the rights from that person. (it happened to a friend of mine for a series that was released years ago.)So?the smart companies use the fans to get the best product out there. "Give the Fans what they want" is not a stupid policy. that's one reason why most production companies don't go after the fan clubs that don't do this for profit. it's 1) an indication as to what's popular. 2) quality control 3) free marketing.
4) encourage people to pick up the Offical, Licenced versions.I don't see how. Why pay when you can get something for free, until the law comes for you anyway?the clubs pull the title from their distribution list. the WHOLE TITLE, and all of the TRUE FAN CLUBS. so if anyone asks for... say Naruto. the reply is "Buy it from the stores, it's out professionally.", "Watch it on Cartoon Netowk." or "We no longer have that title for distribution."
now if an INDIVIDUAL has the title and says publicly, he/she will give a copy to that person, most club will black list him/her from getting any more.
if that transaction happens in private... then it's the individual who will be caught.
if a club refuses to take the title down, then they will either 1) get a cease and desist letter from the company. and/or 2) get blacklisted by the other clubs, so the only way to expand their library is to do it themselves.
A very High percentage of the clubs actually have the support of the production companies as long as they continue to do this practice of pulling titles as soon as confirmation of rights is given.

I typically only download for preview purposes, or to see an episode I missed on TV. The thing is, the only store in our town that sells anime is a used video place, so you dont see much of the 'good stuff' there, especiall series and such. General lack of cash means that I cant afford to buy series Im not going to like, which means I prefer to preview stuff first to avoid getting stuck with something I dont want and cant take back due to the lovely 'Once you buy it its yours forever and will be buried with you and haunt you in the afterlife' policy many stores seem to have now.

update re: hotness of main character in Nana. actress' name is Mika Nakashima, and according to the professor she is a real musician and dabbles in modern jazz (!). Nice. Attractive and talented musician to me, much like Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads fame.
edit: or Grace Slick, but I mean Grace Slick around 40 years ago, when Jefferson Airplane was actually a good band.

Just clips. YES OKAY IT'S A CHICK FLICK. But I'd rather watch that than, say, some Kate Hudson movie. That's not saying much, I guess.
oh yeah: it's worth it for the ridiculous costumes the musicians in the film wear. The drummer of the band the punk-looking girl sings for looks like the guy from the game Hitman.

nothing wrong in a chick flick... ;)
I watch "After School" where two High School students, one a Straight A girl and the second a barely passing punk rocker, switch bodies. Hilarity ensues.
