Considering that the military base on Honolulu reported waves about 32ft (~11m) high, and considering that the highest point on Wake is about half that...
For those who dont know, Wake is a historic site in the Pacific which hosted a few important events in WWII...look it up on Wikipedia :P

So, considering the size and configuration of the island, it doesnt seem too far of a stretch to say that after the storm it may only be a sand bar with some rocks sticking out of the ocean.
Even if it downgrades significantly before it arrives (unlikely) it will do serious damage to the historic sites.

It might come back eventually. But I'm sure it will be wiped clean for awhile.

considering the highest point of wake Island is 20 ft above sea level, and I don't think that includes any buildings...

Wake Island will be submerged, whether there will be enough of an Island left after all's said and done is a good question.

Katrina hit the Gulf Coast over a year ago, and the area is still rebuilding. That was on mainland USA. Does anybody expect Wake Island, a small piece of land hundreds of miles from the shores of North America, to be rebuilt reasonably soon? I certainly don't.

Its not an issue of rebuilding it, its a historical site. Rebuilding a historical site sort of makes it not a historical site.

The base is coral, so the island will still be there after the storm. Stuff on the island, that's another matter.

Its great to see that people care about important historical sites. Im sure the Parthenon would make a great McDonalds.

Its great to see that people care about people more than artifacts of war that can be rebuilt. There is little if any that could rationally be done to save the island's strudtures in the face of a cat 5 hurricane, but I suppose that you would have posted human guards to try their best in the name of saving what you consider to be the equivalent of the pantheon. I suppose if you were in charge of the pantheon and the roman coliseum and wake island then none would be in ruins now would they?

Did I say anything about people?
If you would be so kind, please point out the part of my post where I said that human guards should have been left behind? Quote it for me, and bold it in fact. Oh, its not there. Sorry.
I was stating that I cared about the islands structures, its history. No doubt there is much on that island that we could learn and in a few days it will be gone. If you want a human interest section, its probobly home to lots of fish and sea turtles and all that.
And I said Parthenon, not Pantheon. There is a difference.
As to being in ruins, I seriously doubt I could have stopped the Venetians from blowing it up, or the Greeks from storing gunpowder in it. The Collusium in Rome could have done with a bit more preservation, but considering its age its done fairly well. Most people wont leave a handy pile of rather nice limestone and marble laying around for centuries anyway.
However, denying Wake Island is an important part of American, even world, history is like calling the Napoleonic Wars 'a bit of a scuffle'.

The bridge has already been gone for a number of years. Fishing and drinking off that was the only way to stay sane when you were stuck on that island.

the island was evacuated days ago, so whatever hapens now is okhere is implied that because Not Bad said that the people were evacuated, thus leaving the island to it's fate is ok.

We need guards to control the looting that will follow the flooding.

I dont think anything could be done, I was expressing my regret as to that fact, and my frustration with the fact that some people think that the island has no value, it seems.

I don't think so. there are times when nothing can be done. how people react to that loss is varied. some say "Oh well, it was fun while it lasted" others will Morn their loss. because Ioke is so powerfull, there was nothing one can do except evacuate the people and pray/hope for the best.

Wow. Can you imagine if some poor slob got left behind on the Island? That would be the worst.

I nominate it to be the site of the debate between Ahmadenijad and Bush.

That wouldn't count. We're talking about people, not politicians... ;)
