WoW or Guild Wars?

I've been a bit bored recently and decided to start playing a MMORPG again. But I can't really decide between WoW and Guild Wars...
Has anyone of played both? Which do you prefer and why? Or do you have any alternative suggestions?

Been playing eq2 since launch.
Great game.
Recently, (a week now) started WoW.
It too, is a really great game.
Guild wars is a bit low on content.
Between the two, you'll be MUCH happier with WoW.

Don't get Guild Wars until Nightfall comes out in October. There is no support of Prophecies (the original, plain Guild Wars) and Factions sucks - it is tediosu and droll. Nightfall is beingm ade by the same team who did the original (they divy up every other chapter in order to mass produce as much unsupported shit as possible) so it has alot more promise.

I played WoW for a couple of levels at a friend's house. It was dull.
Eve-Online kept me hooked for over a year; if you're not a carebear ( ;) ) I'd recommend that. You can get 14-day free trials, too, and the client's free.

I've played EVE for a while myself. Nice game, I really liked it, but it's a little ... slow somehow.
I'm sure I will re-activate my account some time in the future. Good thing that skill training is still active even when your account's disabled.

Guild Wars is £10 and that much forever, you never pay a subscription fee.
It's also pretty good graphically, and superb in terms of PvP, although nothing special in terms of PvE.
There's less content, and it's a bit one-dementional in terms of things to do, though. It's also rather lonely outside of the cities, because you are the only one in the zones out of the towns, other than anyone you've teamed up with.
WoW on the other hand, is £30 and then £8 (I think) a month.
It's not as good graphically, is not that impressive in terms of PvP, the PvE is not bad, though.
There are also other good things such as fairly in-depth crafting and the quests are much more engaging, and there are more people around, which is nice (although it also means more griefers etc.).
I'd say of the two it's a bit better overall, although weaker out in terms of PvP than Guild Wars.

What would you recommend then?
Go with guildwars. ive played both, after hitting about level 7 with two carictures i was so friggen bored with WoW that I wanted to smash the game into little pieces. Guildwars I enjoy alot more on the other hand, I have lots of fun with both campains and just love using my minions. IF you want to pay out the nose for the ability to make your own shirt go play WoW, if you want to have fun and save a lot of money go with the better game, guildwars

Neither! Both must die!
I can't stand the whole look of WoW. I've no doubt the content is good, but the graphics just irritate seven shades of fuckery out of me. Were I you, I'd give Dark Age of Camelot a go, and/or wait for Warhammer, which comes out in 2007.

Or scrap the whole MMO thing and get Neverwinter Nights 2 or Dark Messiah of Might and Magic when they come out in October, or grab Civilization IV + Warlords. I ..uh.. borrowed a copy of it and have to admit it is more addicting than previously though, unlike Galactic Civilization.

Played a somewhat buggy demo of "Dark Messiah"...sexy. Its intended as more of a FPS multiplayer though...."Ye Countere of Strike"...

Guild Wars is better for people who don't want to pay to play.
You have to pay the initial cost of the game. But, after that, there is no monthly fee to connect to the servers. The game is always updated and I like the structure.

I played WoW for this summer, and it was just too dull for me. Those quests with the extremely low drop rates just drive me nuts.

I would highly recommend Dark Age of Camelot if you're looking for an MMO where you can pretty much just have fun. It takes almost no time to get to level 50, and once you have one character at 50, you can start new ones out at level 20, eliminating those pesky early levels. And the system they have in place for PvP is excellent and perfect for both people who want to have some fun without any griefing involved, or a lot of commitment and for people that have the spark of a General deep down inside of them. The world is divided into three realms, each of which has a gigantic safe zone where you can PvE until your heart's content plus a frontier zone where you fight alongside your realm-mates against folks from the other two realms to capture and keep towers, keeps and (the ultimate goal) relics.
Or, if you're into a more free-style of PvP without the constraints of DAoC's RvR (Realm vs Realm) and you don't mind one serious treadmill, Lineage II is an excellent game that is certainly worth a shot. This game is not for the faint of heart, however: The treadmill will be very, very long and you are bound to be killed by PKs once in a while (though it is always nice when you manage to kill them. PKs have a very high chance of dropping gear, which can be very expensive.)

Neither.
WoW is the grind from hell, populated by a bunch of obnoxious second-rate gamers with delusions of grandeur.
GW is just totally boring. If I wanted to play a shooter, I'd play a shooter.
I'm a Shadowbane man. It's not a crafting/carebear based game where everything is about gaining the next set of equiptment. What it is, is a GvG game driven by destroying other cities in the name of world dominance. It has a good progression system, with a great deal of customizability (which is 99% unused by a population who favor FoTM builds), and fast level-up.
It's also free, right now.

Ultima Online is excellent, the more recent MMORPGs are no match for it in terms of positive complexity of gameplay and good community (EVE-Online is close in this respect though). I lost interest in the game a couple of years ago after playing it for a very long time, but I still highly recommend it to everyone. I am also yet to try the free shards of Ultima Online - from what I've seen, some of them have evolved tremendously and exceeded the official ones in quality.
One of the best choices among the fancy new ones is probably Everquest II, which I'm currently playing, the content is rather good and the game itself is relatively fresh. Looks like it degraded a bit since Everquest I, the world seems to be somewhat simplified, but it's still fine.
Both World of Warcraft and Guild Wars look rather primitive to me. They're the modern equivalents of Diablo.
I was something of a Ragnarok Online fan back when it was in Beta, then again a while later in a Private Server. That was fun to start with, got pretty old in the mid-game then got way better once you hit the higher levels. My monk kicked ass. I don't think it's worth getting into at the minute though; the developers have pretty much let it go while they work on RO2 (which looks pretty cool in itself).

Guild Wars is, in my opinion, the superior game on virtue of its lack of subscription fees alone. I've noticed a couple of people complain that there's no support for the original [Prophecies] campaign, but I'm not really sure that's the case. I've had problems before and gotten answers fairly quickly, and I've been playing for about a year.
There's also a lot more to do in the game than some people seem to think; I've logged 2300 hours and I've still got quite a bit left to do.
Seeing as WoW owns more than 50% of the world MMO market I think the answer is easy...or was it the North American market? Whatever...

Stuff WoW, I play a funky 2D french creation called 'Dofus'. It's great. Very stylish. Lots of fun. The whole thing runs on flash too (though you couldn't tell). It's got a good sense of humour too. Ridiculous humour, LG style. I definitely reccomend it. ;) Free too, with the option to pay.

Let's not contradict people who have been following the game since the first E3 event.

You either go realllly slow or are gonig afk alot. People with all skills and item bonuses unlocked have less hours than that.
You can realistically do everything there is to do in the first game in a week of even gaming (given the optimal condition of party finding which is nil). In Factions it is alot more difficult because the game is filled with tedious quests and barriers that add artificial length.
My hunter was better.
I played a private server. I quit playing the day it took a hunter to level from 93 to 95 in a day. The game mechanics were too broken for me to continue bothering to play.

QFT, as they say in EVE.
It does have a certain pace, certainly in war, when all sides are serious about it. If the game feels slow, that's only people people are missing opportunities to be doing stuff.

I play Guild Wars. Why? Weeeeelllll… I don’t really have a good reason. A couple of my friends wanted to try a MMO, but they didn’t want to pay a monthly fee – that eliminated most games from the outset. And of those that were left, Guild Wars was the one that they found in a shop. And eventually they pestered me into getting it as well.
Having had it for a year, I’m fairly satisfied. It can be a bit tedious at times, but overall the pace is good. I only wish that the economy wasn’t player based…

Shadowbane is free now? Gameplay wise, SB is the best MMOG I have ever played, but the severe lack of players is a real turn-off for me: I've levelled a character up to 20 or so without seeing a single other person. If it's free now though, I might give it a shot again.

I'm a WOW man myself. Despite the monthly fees I've found it to be hugely satisfying. Plus to totally complete it (don't think it's ever been done) You would need more time than any human being should have and about 10 characters. Furthermore the PvP just got much better as they linked all the servers in the battlegrounds so you can now get in with a less than five minute wait.

Why do people keep comparing WoW to Guild Wars? It's really not a fair comparison. I've played both, WoW has more storyline, better lore, and HUGE HUGE masses of people, not something I'm fond of. Guild Wars on the other hand lacks in story and lore but makes up for it in it's capacity for strategy. It's smaller teams and restriction on the amount of abilities allowed to be carried into combat forces higher thinking levels, a good thin in my opinion. There's a time for both, Guild Wars isn't your traditional mmo, I believe it's actually styled CORPG. In any case I'm hoping a new game will surpass them both soon.
