Educating the masses..

Well this has to do with what happened to me today in school.

As I went through all my electives and what not, they were all mixed with college prep, and business students.

Thinking they would all be easy, I went to my last class (Government).

To my surprise all the other students were senior college preps.. and there I was, a junior business student.

The teacher seemed to use a different method to teach than I was use to.

I really don't know if I'm making sense..

In a class setting, is it better to use a heterogeneous system, or a homogeneous system with students?

Not sure which bad joke to make, the one about heterogeneity versus homogeneity in our schools or something else ...

I would think that each teacher, within reasonable gudelines, could use whatever method worked best for s/he. You weren't specific, though, how did this different method differ from what you're used to?

Uhm, one's the quality of being heterogeneous and the other is the quality of being homogeneous? I think. Maybe.

It was more of a.. I can't explain..

Like.. it was more "fend for yourself" instead of hands-on approach..

This thread sounded much better in my head..

whats the difference between the two?

Heterogeneous means that something (an object or system) consists of a diverse range of different items. It is the antonym of homogeneous, which means that an object or system consists of many identical items.
The students were mixed, it felt like he was trying to teach the majority..

if the rest of the students are college prep. then the teacher is doing the right thing by preparing them, if you are not going to college I guess it's a lesson to be learned anyway, life in general is fend for yourself.

I had a teacher in junior high, freaked me out, there were no assignments he just lectured all day long, no tests, no homework, nothing. I took notes, but everyone else just slept or played gameboy, at the end of the semester he had this huge ass test, open notes.

I passed, nobody else got above a C. I got my ass kicked after school ;)

oh well, I learned something from that class, you gotta look out for yourself, even if nobody else seems to be.

Highschool.

College prep is more.. preparing the student for College.

Business leans more to business managment and trade school.

Please, Ruffy, don't become a manager! They ... they'll remove your moral compass and the next thing you know, you'll be telling people they have to work weekends, and saying things like "Just have him solution the problem," and "It's a win-win situation." Think of the children!

So your high school has two separate tracks for the kids that want to go to college and those that don't? I've never heard of a school doing that.

Anyway, it makes sense that the teacher does that if the class is mostly college prep. College, in my experience, was a lot more fend-for-yourself than high school was. Professors and TAs were available if you needed help, but they didn't walk you through everything step by step. Is that kind of what you were getting at?

Don't worry, you'll adapt.

I saw something like this in college. The class was Probability Theory, a senior-level math class. 10 people in it. 9 of us knew the prof and took this specific class because we knew we'd be getting a measure-theoretic approach to the subject. The 1 other guy was some poor engineering shmo who needed the class and this one fit his schedule. We didn't touch the book all semester and the guy was totally lost :(

Moral? Transfer if it's going to be all over your head!

Um, there's HOW many kids in the class? I hate to say it, but as a teacher, it's hard to try to match every single kid when you have 20+ students.

Especially when 19 of the students are heading in one direction and the lone student is going somewhere else.

As a recomendation, you might want to talk to the teacher and let him or her know that you're stuggling, he might not be willing to change his lessons around just to suit you, of course, but he may be willing to provide extra help or at least check up more often to make sure you're doing ok.

Contrary to popular belief, our l33t teacher mind reading powers only work when you're contemplating how to get into trouble and not when your struggling in class. ;)

RUFFINO! you have one hard class. in government, a topic you are obviously interested in

do some freaking work for a change, you might like it.

ask around about the teacher. if he is acclaimed as a great teacher, keep the class. no matter how hard the class you will love it.

if he is average, talk to him about it since you are a jr in a class full of srs. it may be too much for you.

if he sucks, change it immediately. you will hate the class and get a terrible grade.

It really depends on the class and what is going on.

Sometimes it really benefits to have a different perspective. Sometimes it just destroys flow.As NER said, talk to the teacher. At the very least, it can't hurt, and you'll show that you give a damn and aren't just blowing the class off.

Ruffy, don't worry. I've faith you can do okay in the class. If you need any help at all, feel free to TG me; I'm a government major, so I should be able to help. My only other advice is to pay attention in class, take notes, and do all the reading. If you do those things, you should be able to survive.
