So, we've got ourself (probably) a hurricane. Ernesto is currently smashing away in the mountains of Cuba, which is causing it to weaken alot. However, once it passes Cuba, it will hit the hot water south of Florida and speed up like a mad-man...it is expected to take dead aim and smash into Miami-Dade county and Broward County (the areas where Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are).

Thats a sat-map of the hurricane..currently destroying Cuba. At the top of the pic you can see South Florida...where the hurricane is projected to hit.

So, there are two parts of this thread. 1. Discuss Hurricanes...Have you ever been in one? Ask about them...ect.

2. Floridians and other people of the gulf-coast states...what are you doing to prepare, got any stories about hurricanes....ect.

People used to underestimate hurricanes. I had the hardest time convincing people that as disasters go, they're on par with eathquakes and tornadoes. I don't have that argument as much anymore. :p

Hahahahahahhahaahhahahha....omg! No, you stock up on gas for your power generators. Hurricanes usually cause mass power outages which means...no A.C., electricity for your fridge, computer power...ect. Using a generator powered by gas, you can power up tons of things even if there is a black out. :)

Speaking of hurricanes, I found this (http://www.gregpalast.com/hurricane-expert-threatened-for-pre-katrina-warnings) little tidbit about Katrina very interesting:

HURRICANE EXPERT THREATENED FOR PRE-KATRINA WARNINGS
Monday, August 28. From New Orleans.

DON'T blame the Lady. Katrina killed no one in this town. In fact, Katrina missed the city completely, going wide to the east.

It wasn't the hurricane that drowned, suffocated, de-hydrated and starved 1,500 people that week. The killing was done by a deadly duo: a failed emergency evacuation plan combined with faulty levees. Behind these twin failures lies a tale of cronyism, profiteering and willful incompetence that takes us right to the steps of the White House.

Here's the story you haven't been told. And the man who revealed it to me, Dr. Ivor van Heerden, is putting his job on the line to tell it.

Van Heerden isn't the typical whistleblower I usually deal with. This is no minor player. He's the Deputy Director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center. He's the top banana in the field -- no one knew more about how to save New Orleans from a hurricane's devastation. And no one was a bigger target of an official and corporate campaign to bury the information.

Here's what happened. Right after Katrina swamped the city, I called Washington to get a copy of the evacuation plan.

Funny thing about the murderously failed plan for the evacuation of New Orleans: no one can find it. That's right. It's missing. Maybe it got wet and sank in the flood. Whatever: no one can find it.

That's real bad. Here's the key thing about a successful emergency evacuation plan: you have to have copies of it. Lots of copies -- in fire houses and in hospitals and in the hands of every first responder. Secret evacuation plans don't work.

I know, I worked on the hurricane evacuation plan for Long Island New York, an elaborate multi-volume dossier.

Specifically, I'm talking about the plan that was written, or supposed to have been written two years ago by a company called, "Innovative Emergency Management."

Weird thing about IEM, their founder Madhu Beriwal, had no known experience in hurricane evacuations. She did, however, have a lot of experience in donating to Republicans.

IEM and FEMA did begin a draft of a plan. The plan was that, when a hurricane hit, everyone in the Crescent City would simply get the hell out in their cars. Apparently, the IEM/FEMA crew didn't know that 127,000 people in the city didn't have cars. But Dr. van Heerden knew that. It was his calculation. LSU knew where these no-car people were -- they mapped it -- and how to get them out.

Dr. van Heerden offered this life-saving info to FEMA. They wouldn't touch it. Then, a state official told him to shut up, back off or there would be consequences for van Heerden's position. This official now works for IEM.

So I asked him what happened as a result of making no plans for those without wheels, a lot of them elderly and most of them poor.

"Fifteen-hundred of them drowned. That's the bottom line." The professor, who'd been talking to me in technicalities, changed to a somber tone. "They're still finding corpses."

Van Heerden is supposed to keep his mouth shut. He won't. The deaths weigh on him. "I wasn't going to listen to those sort of threats, to let them shut me down."

Van Heerden had other disturbing news. The Hurricane Center's computer models showed the federal government had built the levees around the city a foot-and-a-half too short.

After Katrina, the Hurricane Center analyzed the flooding and found that, had the levees had just that extra 18 inches, they would have been "overtopped" for only an hour and a half, not four hours. In that case, the levees would have held, and the city would have been saved.

He had taken the warning about the levees all the way to George Bush's doorstep. "I myself briefed senior officials including somebody from the White House." The response: the university's trustees threatened his job.

While in Baton Rouge, I dropped in on the headquarters of IEM, the evacuation contractors. The assistant to the CEO insisted they had "a lot of experience with evacuation" -- but couldn't name a single city they'd planned for when they got the Big Easy contract. And still, they couldn't produce the plan.

An IEM press release in June 2004 boasted legendary expert James Lee Witt as a member of their team. That was impressive. It was also a lie. In fact, Witt had nothing to do with it. When I asked IEM point blank if Witt's name was used as a fraudulent hook to get the contract, their spokeswoman said, weirdly, "We'll get back to you on that."

Back at LSU, van Heerden astonished me with the most serious charge of all. While showing me huge maps of the flooding, he told me the White House had withheld the information that, in fact, the levees were about to burst and by Tuesday at dawn the city, and more than a thousand people, would drown.

Van Heerden said, "FEMA knew on Monday at 11 o'clock that the levees had breached… They took video. By midnight on Monday the White House knew. But none of us knew ...I was at the State Emergency Operations Center." Because the hurricane had missed the city that Monday night, evacuation effectively stopped, assuming the city had survived.

It's been a full year now, and 73,000 New Orleanians remain in FEMA trailers and another 200,000, more than half the city's former residents, remain in temporary refuges. "The City That Care Forgot" -- that's their official slogan -- lost a higher percentage of homes than Berlin lost in World War II. It would be more accurate to call it, "The City That Bush Forgot."

Should they come home? Rebuild? Is it safe? Team Bush assures them there's nothing to worry about: FEMA won't respond to van Heerden's revelations. However, the Bush Administration has hired a consulting firm to fix the failed evacuation plan. The contractor? A Baton Rouge company named "Innovative Emergency Management." IEM.

It doesnt...Ever. The only problems people have with this is that there are ALWAYS a few tools who leave their generator running next to their window or in thier garage or in the their house..and get carbon monoxide poisoning.

It doesn't hurt that the governor is the President's brother, and that Dubya really needed a win after the disaster that was the Katrina response.

As for the prep, it won't be too hard. Drop the shutters over the front window and make the living room completely impassable with all our outside shit and we should be okay. We live a block from a FEMA ice and water station if it becomes necessary, though this shouldn't be a major storm. If it's as bad as Katrina was when it hit Florida last year, I'll be surprised.

What was Katrina? A 2? And Wilma? Also a 2?

Katrina was a 1 when it crossed Florida, but it didn't act like a 1. It did incredible damage and soaked the hell out of the state. We were without power for three miserably hot days during that one--grateful for cold showers then--and it took out part of a Miami highway that was under construction. Wilma was a borderline 3 when it hit us, and the destruction zone was the widest in Florida history--it went from the Keys to St. Lucie county, about 160 miles, which is why it fucked so much up. That's part of the reason why I'm cautiously optimistic about Ernesto, especially when it comes to electricity. Some people will lose it, no doubt, but most of the really vulnerable spots were taken out last year, and this storm shouldn't be too bad once Cuba's mountains finish fucking it up.

Hurricanes are nothing to worry about if you are prepared. And as long as you don't live right by the coast, at below sea level. I won't go so far as to say those people deserve it...but...well...if you choose to live in that area... then you are asking for it. It's not like hurricanes are new.

I've lived in Florida all my life (I'm 29), and I think people getting all scared and worried is so funny. I've been through enough hurricanes that I can't really remember which hurricane party was which.

I've lived in Florida for the most of my life. In 2004, three of the hurricanes passed directly over my hometown (the eye of the storm, mind you), and although my parent's house survived just fine with some moderate damage (mostly downed trees, trashed pool area, fence built to withstand hurricanes and yet fell after the flurry of them [obviously they can only take one 'cane a year...]), the entire landscape was ripped, shredded, and reassembled by the blind hands of obscure divinities.

As for the Gulf Coast and Hurricane Katrina, all I'm gonna say is this: If you live in an area that's below sea level, and any type of serious storm approaches, what the hell do you think is gonna happen?

Hell, having lived here in Florida for so long, I've come to see that some Floridians see oncoming hurricanes as an exciting time, almost as if it were our own version of Mardi Gras.

Yeap, Hurricanes Ivan, Dennis, Opal, and others. On the beach for Babe. Loverly waves, and the one person that I knew of that died in Babe, well, that one was a Darwin Award Winner wanna be. (Sorry, but a normal person does NOT climb onto the top of a roof, when the thing is directly overhead and could have waited until the thing had passed.)

Ivan spawned tornadoes, one of which ripped the barn up behind us. Less than 70 feet away. (shudder)

The worse part of the hurricanes is the power outage and necessary cleanup afterwards. For Ivan, it took a month and a week for my area to go back on the grid. (and the electrical companies that came down to help get the area back on line were working HARD from before 6 a.m. to after 8 p.m. every day.) Those poor dears were EXHAUSTED. And as some came from cooler tempertured states, the heat and humidity were vicious to them.

One of the problems for the electric trucks were FOOLS who had hotwired their houses to big generators, making the lines 'hot' instead of plugging in various items the way they were supposed to.

I believe I was born on either the day Nixon was elected or the day after. And my birthday was election day in 2000 and will be again this year. I'm hoping for slightly different results this time around.

Where do you live?

Ivan was nothing...you should have been in Florida for Wilma.

Wilam was such a typical bitch....when she came she was wet and wild, then she fucked us and took everything we had.:(

Wilma was nothing, you should've been there for Andrew. I don't live in Miami anymore, I moved out in 'o4 but I can remember well(even though I was a young'n) the destruction of Andrew. I've never seen so much shit destroyed in my life. People were paying my dad to chainsaw trees that had fallen on cars or houses. The house we were in lost almost every roof tile, four windows, a sky light, had a huge tree fall on a car, and lost electricity for weeks. Not to mention I got to see a tornado outside my window!

I've lived in Florida for my entire life. What really bothers me is that many of my classmates just say, "Yay! A hurricane's coming! No school on Wednesday!"

What they don't seem to get is that even ifwe are lucky and we live through it unharmed and with only minor or no damage, we'll still have to use one of our days from Thanksgiving break to make up the school time. And besides, even if we are lucky, where is the fun in missing school if we can't go outside and, in all likelihood, the power will go out, at least for a little while? And if we're not lucky...no more school for a long time. Along with no more house and possibly even no more life.:(

Relax, have fun, be safe, and enjoy the time off from the stress of everyday life and school.

And by the way. No school on Tuesday and Wednesday!;)

I didn't mean to depress anyone. It's just that my area has been really lucky so far and I'm worried that it's made people underestimate hurricanes.

And I really enjoy school. I'll miss it :)

Lauderdale are).

http://storm1.herald.com/auto/miamiherald/global/Region/g3/2xpxIRSatellite.html

Thats a sat-map of the hurricane..currently destroying Cuba. At the top of the pic you can see South Florida...where the hurricane is projected to hit.

So, there are two parts of this thread. 1. Discuss Hurricanes...Have you ever been in one? Ask about them...ect.

2. Floridians and other people of the gulf-coast states...what are you doing to prepare, got any stories about hurricanes....ect.

i dont understand why people live in places were weather can kill you. that would suck to have on your tombstone. unless you sky dived into a tornado, that would be cool.

Most people can't understand why others live in high crime areas, or places where people had been known to blow each other up, either.

they have more strict rules for titles...no profanity, that kinda thing. Those show up on all pages without people being able to choose, so it makes more sense to keep that page clean.

I grew up just south of Houston (Brazoria county) - lived there from '75 to '86, and off and on from '86 to '92 (off to college).

Got run over by: TS Claudette in '79, Cat. 3 Alicia back in '83, and the tail end of Cat. 1 Chantal and Cat. 1 Jerry in '89. (I just missed TS Allison).

Since moving to Osaka, I've been run over by a few typhoons and got near hits from several more.

Super Typhoon Ioke (http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/ap_alaska/story/8132157p-8024611c.html)(cat 5) will be passing Wake Island this Wed. it's is predicted that Wake Island will be submerged (being that the highest elevation is 20 ft about sealevel) the inhabitants/workers at Wake Island has just been evacuated to Hawaii...

can you imagine... Wake Island won't even be a speed bump to Ioke.

and should it maintain it's strength, and hit either Japan or the Phillipines...

As for the Gulf Coast and Hurricane Katrina, all I'm gonna say is this: If you live in an area that's below sea level, and any type of serious storm approaches, what the hell do you think is gonna happen?

Though it may seem odd, I hope we take it here and not the Philippines. The waters around Japan are much cooler and take the stuffing out of typhoons. Out of the several I've been through (lost count exactly, but around 8-10), only 2 were at all impressive, and then only because they went exactly right over us in Osaka. Plus, Japanese constuction tends to withstand the winds better, resulting in lower loss of life. There are usually a few deaths when we get hit by one, but mostly they seem to be due to stupidity - things like someone thinking that the middle of a typhoon is a good time to have a cookout on the beach, go winsurfing, or check the rice fields.

With luck, those factors will reduce it down to a cat 3, maybe a cat 2, but if it only reduces it down to a cat 4 or worse (since they are calling this THE most powerful Typhoon in Decades) it stays a cat 5...

I will agree tho... Japan's ability to recover is greater than the Phillipines... IMHO that is..
