Canadian NS meet?

Mikesburg

Is such a thing even possible?

Would the Canadian posters on this forum even want to get together with the rest of the mishmash of Canucks on NS? Would you have to break it down to east and west? Invite NSer's from neighbouring American states?

Personally, any excuse to go out and have a few drinks and discuss nonsense (everything on this forum falls under that banner as far as I'm concerned) is a good gathering.

Waddayou think?

Very much so. I went to Tim Horton's this morning. I didn't get a double double though so I guess that's the American part.

Double-Double is over-rated.

I always get a 'regular', unless I'm in the states, in which case I speciffically ask for 'one cream, one sugar'.

Just join Confederation already. What are you waiting for? A personal invitation from Bob and Doug Mackenzie?

I can arrange that if you want.

Yes. But that's alright. As long as you also have Slapshot. You have to have them both. It's a chemical reaction thing. They cancel each other out.

Whoa! Whoa!

It's just an idea! We've seen how hard Ilie worked at trying to get an NS get-to-gether going, and it doesn't seem to have worked out too well. I was just seeing what the Canadian posters thought of such a thing.

I live in the GTA. I'd be up for a GTA get together, although I'm not sure how many of us there are. And there's enough Michiganders and NY staters around who would be more then welcome to show up.

But I was just testing the waters, so to speak.

I live in East-end GTA, durham region actually. As far west as Mississauga, Oakville is 'reasonable' for me, depending on schedule, and I know there's a few regular Canadian posters who live in the GTA. That's not to say that it's that big of a deal if such a thing happens, but it's not impossible.

I'd say meet up in the lobby of the Royal York hotel, right across the street from Union Station. It's central for TTC, Go Transit (buses and trains), is just off the Gardiner Expressway, and is adjacent to the central taxi hub entering the core from Pearson Airport.

Oh, and it's close to the Island Airport, too.

Good place to start, anyway.

I've never been to Royal York personally. Union Station might be too crowded, and I don't actually live in the city, so I'll take your word for it. Any kind of central place where you can sit down and wait for stragglers works.

Union is where people inevitably pass through into the downtown, the Royal York is a well-appointed (centrally-located) hotel with a large lobby (you could sit down) - and it's right across from Union, on Front Street.

Trust me, it's just what you're looking for. Within walking distance of the CN Tower, Dundas Square, the St. Lawrence Market, Eaton Centre, the Queen Street strip, old City Hall, Nathan Phillips Square, and it's just a quick taxi-ride to Boystown or the Kensington Market. Oh, and Clubland is close by too, so dancing and drinking is a definite option.

Give me an itinerary, I'll get things arranged (I live/work in the core, btw).

The NationStaters (well, Wysterians) from Victoria have met up from time to time. We could easily reach out and include other Western Canadians. Or, should there be a good place to meet in Vancouver, get off our duffs and cross the Great Water to the mainland.

How terribly expensive is parking in TO, or is there some sort of parking area + mass transit outside of the city? Anyway, it seems that any sort of accomodations and parking will be quite expensive for those of us from out of the area.

Well, I'm not suggesting staying at the Royal York, just meeting there. It's easy to get to, and central, is all. Handy for those who might not know their way around.

As far as parking area + mass transit, you could most likely park it at a GO station and hop the train bound for Union. Of course, if you're going to stay overnight, there's invariably going to be accomodations in your price range available. Or who knows, maybe you'll get lucky while you're here and you won't need to bother with paid accomodations.

I'd suggest looking up hotels online. It's competitive, there should be some good deals available. Oh one thing - I'm thinking if we make this a reality, should we steer clear of timing it while there's some big thing happening in town, like the film festival?

Parking is an enormous pain in the ass, although not as bad as NYC (I'm speaking from the point of view of someone who makes deliveries all over the GTA, it sucks). I can't possibly think of how you would make accomodations inexpensive, unless you shacked up in a hotel in the burbs, and took the GO train into the city. The mass-transit system's not too shabby.
