What's your name from?
Edwardis
27-08-2006, 23:59
I haven't been here very long (like two days) so this may have been done before.
How did you make your nation's name? Is it totally made up? Is it derived from a Proto-IndoEuropean root for basket? Is it in reference to a superhero?
I originally wanted to name my country after John Calvin: Calvinia, but that name was already taken. So I chose to name it after Jonathan Edwards: Edwardia. However, I pressed s instead of a without realizing. So now, my nation is Edwardis. Nothing too spectacular.

I once knew a dustman, who used to collect the rubbish from my street every Wednesday morning at 7:36 AM, on the dot. As he came up the road in his big van, he would should 'Philo! Philo!', which he claimed was a chant to the ancient gods of Atlantis to give him good luck. You see, he believed that being a dustman was a dirty profession in the eyes of the gods, and so felt the need to cleanse himself of this sin as he earned his living.
Now, the 'sopy' part is the Latin word for 'Ancient Forest of Willows', a reference to my love of the great game of cricket.

"Soheran" was the name of a benevolent theocracy in a world I invented once; I think the origin of the word has something to do with the Hebrew term "beit sohar" (prison) but I can't recall what.

'Cause "King Arthur" had been taken, and anyways, King Arthur was, by accounts, one of the greatest of the British Kings in his day. He was able to drive away the Saxon invaders, and his marriage to Gwenyvere was somewhat political, since it gave him a claim to much of Alba (Scotland). He came from mixed Celtic Heritage, making him one of the first kings to have a claim to the throne of Britain long before the Crowns were unified under James VI & I.

The Parkus Empire
28-08-2006, 02:05
Comes from the name of my SWBF2 EMPIRE (not to be confused with clan). See my region description for more details.
I took two syllables and put them together.
I took "Min" (small... I forget why...) and put "-is" and the end (to make it sound like a real word ('-is' is a Latin ending (3rd declension, Masculine/Feminine, Nominative Singular)). Since "Minis" sounds horrible, "ar" got thrown in...
So it came to be "Minaris"...
I looked it up one time, and it means something... does anyone know what it means?

IL Ruffino
28-08-2006, 09:29
As I was backpacking through Europe one summer, I became thirsty and tired..
After walking several miles, I came across a vineyard and felt like exploring the grounds. As I reached the west side of the rows and rows of vibrant grapes on vines; I had found a little cottage and a little old lady sitting on a bench.
She waved me over and offered me all types of foods and wines that her family has made. Whilst sitting in her kitchen, I noticed a bottle covered in dust, laying in the cupbard. She saw me looking at the bottle and started telling me about it, its history.
The bottle of wine had been the last thing her late husband had ever created. As she wiped a tear from her eye she picked up the bottle, and dusted off the label.
On the label said "IL Ruffino"; she insisted I take it with me on my journey, I couldn't say no to such a nice lady..
And that is how I got my nations name.
.. that, or it was the old empty wine bottle I found at my nana's house..

My name came from the ideas of Metal Bands that have been on tour too long, and I think an entire nation of sore-throated Ozzy's, Corey Taylor's, and other such metal bands would be amusing. A government that requires Metal Music at all hours of the day, regardless of health issues. A moment of silence and the Preafects will execute the the familes of the perpetrators.

My nation is named after an old character of mine from Diablo II, back when I used to waste far too much time on that cursed game. He was a level 96 Druid (Werewolf type for the curious) before lack of activity resulted in his deletion.

If where the following story came from needs explaining, then you're too much of a n00b.
Back in the day, (a few years ago actually) me and my best mate were N64 wh0res and one of the games we played was wcw/nwo revenge, a pro-wrestling game. One day I decided to re-name on of the made up characters. Being a southpark fan then too, I named him 'FiveassedmonkeymanVII' with the 'manVII' being added on in a spur of the moment thing. About a month later, I was discussing with this said friend what I should use for my yahoo msger ID (I just started using that again even though no one I know is ever on) and he suggested I use the fiveassed name, so I did, 'Fiveassedmonkeyman7' became my Yahoo ID. A few months later, I started playing the online game 'Planetarion' (sometime during Round 3 for people who know when that was) and stuck with the name for my planets ruler name. Using IRC became an important part of playing this game, and I was forced to shorten my name to 'Monkeyman7' for IRC. Sometime during the round, my birthday happened and some of my friends gave me an orange 'pimp' tshirt which I wore constantly. When round 4 of Planetarion started, I adjusted my ruler name slightly on the back of this tshirt to 'Fiveassedmonkeypimp7' or 'Monkeypimp' for IRC. When I started up on NS, I ran with it.

Anglachel and Anguirel
29-08-2006, 05:46
Anglachel and Anguirel come from the Tolkien mythology. They were two swords forged by the Dark Elf Eol. He kept Anguirel, but gave Anglachel to King Thingol in tribute. Thingol then gave Beleg Cuthalion permission to take any sword from his hoard, and he chose Anglachel. After Beleg's accidental killing by his companion Turin, the sword passed to Turin and was renamed Gurthang, or Iron of Death.
Since my two main nations are Beleg Cuthalion and Turin Avenged, and this is my usual UN nation, I figured this name was appropriate (and I think just plain ol' Anglachel was taken).
Long story short: Anglachel was sword used by other nations' namesakes. Anguirel was twin sword to Anglachel.
Even shorter: Tolkien.
Nation of Fortune
29-08-2006, 05:50
I wanted a nation that revolved around mercenaries. Seeing as how soldier of fortune (for those of you not in the know, it's a term for a mercenary) was taken I tweaked it a bit, and came up with Nation of Fortune. Hence a connotation that means a nation of mercenaries.

Dostoevsky was illiterate compared to Tolkien, though he was good compared to most people. Hail Tolkien!

I'm re-reading the Silmarillion right now...such a great story. :)

Scarlet States
29-08-2006, 09:08
My nation's name was inspired by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. I've always been very interested in Russia as a country, especially the revolutionary and cold war eras. I wanted my name to sound "socialist"-like, so I used the word scarlet, being a predominantly "socialist" colour, put "states" in front of that, then I chose to put "The Confederacy of..." before it, as I've always been a fan of the Swiss confederate government.

Schartelfritzen

Schartelfritzen was a running joke in a parody series of mine, and I decided I liked the name too much to let it go.

From the game?
My name is entirely made up by me. I created a name that sounded elvish without resourcing to the common literature and themes, like Tolkien, DragonLance, D&D and so forth.
I think I managed to achieve my goal. Aelosia is also the name of one of my characters, and the name of a fantasy nation I created for a D&D campaign like five or six years ago. It was supposed to mean "The land of the mists".
Here in NS the meaning has changed a lot.

Nothing too spectacular.
 not telling.

i wanted Donmania but someone all ready had it. so i went with gorias, the east city of tir na n-og where lugh(the god of being really cool) got his spear from from.
Aquilonius Gloria
15-09-2006, 13:23
Aquilonius Gloria is latin for Northern Glory. Since I´m from Iceland I wanted something suitable, but almost everything was taken. Why in Latin? Well I didn´t have any special reason, I know of this English to Latin website and I thought it sounded pretty cool...or at least not completely stupid.

Dryks Legacy
15-09-2006, 16:23
I made a thread just like this and it died, mere months ago :(
Noone likes my threads :(
Well the story behind my name is this. My screen name is Dryk (more or less random, no vowels intended (rhymes with bike, dyke etc.)) and I had a few mishaps when trying to join NS, so I added "'s Legacy" to the end.
Pretty crappy story huh? :D

My nation name (Nihonou-san) comes from Japanese:
Nihon: Japan
ou: King
-san: An honorific somewhat like Mr.
Yeah, it's true, my nation name means Mr. King of Japan (I wasn't really thinking about it) BTW, I'm trying to change my forum username to Johnny B Goode. How do I do that? (And add more stuff for my sig).
