The spare processing power of Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) will be harnessed by scientists trying to understand the cause of diseases like Alzheimer's.

Sony has teamed up with US biologists who already run the distributed computing project, folding@home (FAH).

FAH say a network of PS3's will allow performance similar to supercomputers.

With 10,000 machines joined together the researchers calculate they should be able to do a thousand trillion calculations per second.

If that was achieved it would be nearly four times as fast as the world's most powerful supercomputer, IBM's BlueGene/L System, capable of 280.6 trillion calculations per second.

:D

Playstation 3, not only can it play awesome games, but it can save your life.

Who said video games could never save the world? And my parents thought I was wasting all that time in front of Star Fox 64 - it was all leading up to this.

If I get a PS3, which I won't, it will be unplugged when not in use.

There are no good games that are gonna come out for PS3, even PS2 had any decent games, hell i'd rather buy gamecube than a fucking ps2. Atleast gamecube has zelda. But nothing compares to xbox 360, there is just nothing. Halo 3 is coming out in early '07 woot.

If they remake FF7 for the PS3 that will make both the system, the game, the replacement plan, the controllers, etc. worth every penny. But now someones going on about PS3 solving a world crisis?
Power to the gamers of the world. Actually heck Xbox Live should do something like that, when users are offline, let the system be put to background use. Although that'd probably violate a number of ownership laws or whatever.

Great news, hooray for Sony saving the world!

Cloud and his friends are cool, even though they are terrorists. They're still the good guys though, after all the Shinra corporation is destroying the planets lifestream.
Just like the west is ruining our own planet with pollution.

I don't condone terrorism...

Big whoop, so PS3 has a F@H processor. It doesn't stop the system from costing "$599 US!"
