Are Blogs Worth It?

I've been musing about making my own blog recently (by recently I mean 12-18 hours) and after reading (or trawling through) a lot of them I've decided to put the biggest question of our era (no hyperbole there at all) to NS General...

Are blogs even worth the bother?

For those that have them, and for those that are thinking of having one.... are they even worth the time, effort or space on the interweb?

And I mean 'worth it' in any regard.

Thoughts, opinions, usual comic responses required.

They can be. Its a web log where one can put down anything from what you ate for breakfast, to political stories, to humour, pictures etc etc.

I've seen some good.... some bad and just wondering is it really worth having one or is it merely self-fellating one's vanity...

Blogs take up space that could be better filled with porn.

I think of it this way: Who the F*** really cares what you did or what you think?

Therefore, seeing as the answer to this is nobody, yes, it is a giant waste of time.

I don't think its worth it because I for one aint that interesting and also because I would blurt out secrets on it

there is also the fact to consider that if you have that much time you need to get out more

Id depends on if you feel like blogging or not.

Some blogs can be worth it if your political commentary (or story writing or whatever) lands you a job perhaps.

I heard of some people doing a play on the lives of some bloggers because they are super open about their lives and are very interesting I guess. One of the people they are doing the play on is an agoraphobic phone sex worker.

You might make friends with people who like to read your blog - so perhaps it could be worth it that way.

Um... it's usually free to have a blog so it's worth it that way.

You could use it to write about your life and/or dreams and later in life look back on those writings and be nostalgic.

Oh maybe you could write about all your ideas for inventions and then if later someone else comes out with that product you can sue for a part of the profits sayign they stole the idea from you.

I'm sure there are other ways in which it is worth it too but I have a crappy imagination.

I started a livejournal thingie but I never write in it because I never have much to say.

While some blogs are a good read ever once in a while - I'm not really fond of them. Sure, having your own little space in the endless tubes of the internet is nice and all, but I don't really care what most people had for lunch, how they feel about their dogs and cats and cars and such, or why they think the world is the way it is.
Besides, way too many blogs contain personal information that I would not put out in the public - so I wouldn't start one.
Hell, I don't even have enough time as it is without scanning the endless bowels of the interweb to find the one blog that would entertain me enough to return on a regular basis, even less so writing one myself.

I don't keep a journal and I don't care to read other peoples' journals, either.

So, if you really feel like you should have one and you enjoy it - go for it!

(I prefer webcomics, though. Those are way funnier and usually contain some sort of scribble-section.)

I have 3 blogs, one that I blog about the kids and their school and stuff that only my inlaws and such in other cities/states read, it's basically the stupid "Christmas letter" only it gets new info every few days. It keeps them from calling me about "how are the kids doing?" and saves me having to talk to them, so that one is worth it.

I have one for my charity support group for kids, it's useful to my group, I post pictures of outings so the kids can download/print out the ones they want, and I use it to raise awareness of the disease in the local area.

I have the one linked in my sig, it's useless. It keeps me from spamming NSG though, so useful to a certain extent. Also, it's my venty blog, so if I get pissed that will be my probable outlet.

I think two of mine are useful, the other one? not so much, but you guys read it and comment, so I don't want to hear anyone complaining about it.

The only question that should be asked before you make a blog is whether your life is interesting or not.

Depends. If you pick a topic and keep it focused it can be worth it. I find boagworld and the pcworld blogs, for example, very useful and I'm sure they've gotten ideas, met people and even gotten some business from them.

Depends. Are you looking to make a name for yourself? Then probably not, because the signal to noise ratio out there now makes getting an audience very unlikely. But if you're just looking for a way to express yourself in print--which can be oddly satisfying--and aren't so concerned with a big readership, then sure, get after it. And if you pimp it here, you'll get a little bit of an audience, some of which might stick.

They're worth it if you live life as though your eyes were the viewfinder of a Panaflex camera. But if you aren't narcissistic and self-important to the point of psychosis, then resoundingly, no - they aren't.

Consider that mainstream media doesn't police itself, and is satisfied by putting out crap that isn't verified.

Consider that the only people who catch the mainstream media putting out crap are blogs.

They serve a useful purpose there. Until the day comes when the Eason Jordan School of Journalism is gone, and no longer the mainstream, blogs will be useful.

Programming blogs are also extremely useful.
