The mailman has just been here and boy, am I happy!

This one's for all of you who are avid followers of Iron Maiden and were as deeply disappointed by their last album (Dance of Death) as I was, good news for you:

Iron Maiden has released their new album today (at least in Europe, that is - I believe the release-date for the US is later; sorry folks) and it rocks like it should!

A little darker than Brave New World and waaay better than DoD - this one is what one could and should expect from the band! It's simply great and I hope many of you can share my enthusiasm. Hey, maybe I even got some of you interested in Iron Maiden?

Anyway, this one gets two thumbs up - we have a winner!

Are you trying to seriously piss me off? Because that's the impression I'm getting by your trolling and flamebating. If you don't like Iron Maiden - why don't you just fucking leave this thread?

Anyway, back to more important issues - maybe the following will please those to whom the phrase "Up the Irons!" actually means something.

Track-by-Track review please. I'm glad someone else was disappointed by Dance Of Death. I was beginning to think I was lost amidst the sea of sycophants.
Definitely not. Dance Of Death sucked and I was very disappointed considering the high quality of Brave New World for which I had waited sooo long.

Track-by-Track review, huh?:eek::eek: It's a Friday night and I don't have anything better to do than to listen to it for a third time today. So that at least gives it another purpose. And before you might say I overdid it – I really enjoyed dissecting Iron Maiden’s new album a lot – otherwise I wouldn’t have done it, a’ight? ;) [numbers behind titles on a +10 to 1- scale]

01 (04:17) Different World [8]
Fairly fast and very melodic, although it sometimes seems that Bruce can't reach as high as he might have to - then again, there's a reason they call him the siren ;)
Solid opener of the album, but not as kick-ass as for example The Wicker Man on Brave New World

02 (06:52) These Colours Don't Run [7]
Reminds me of the X-Factor's Sign Of The Cross and a live version of Fear Of The Dark. Solid material with a sombre tone. Also sounds a like Seventh Son of a Seventh Son if you ask me.

03 (08:44) Brighter Than a Thousand Suns [8]
The beginning of this song reminds me of AC/DC's Hells Bells, followed by heavy guitar riffs that we haven't heard from Maiden in a long time. Darker and stronger than the typical Maiden sound, almost driving. Bruce is adding to that impression, too. Halfway through typical Maiden riffs, very melodic - followed by the driving again, heavy percussions.

04 (05:07) The Pilgrim [8]
Again, very melodic and somehow a little darker (but good!); the guitars again have that pushing feeling, sometimes even creating a certain "desert"-sound to it (IYKWIM), reminds me a little of To Tame A Land off the Piece Of Mind.

05 (07:48) The Longest Day [7]
This one's slowly gathering force, heavily carried by Bruce's voice. The instrumental mid-part reminds me a little of Blood On The World's Hands overall sound. Solid piece of music, a round number.

06 (05:36) Out Of The Shadows [9]
The beginning sounds like Fear Is The Key mixed with The Fugitive off Fear Of The Dark with a slight resemblance to Black Sabbath's War Pigs. But it turns into a very soft-spoken and melodic ballad sounding a little like Out Of The Silent Planet off the Brave New World.

07 (07:21) The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg [10]
Slow, soft-spoken, and melodic opening until after about two minutes - wham! - guitars and Bruce kicking in. No wonder this is the first single released. Again, the typically driving but maybe harder and darker guitars that carry you through the song.

Funny thing I found on the net about Benjamin Breeg (because, honestly, who the hell is he? Little can be found about him! I honestly believe this one to be a band insider)
http://www.benjaminbreeg.co.uk/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Breeg

08 (09:24) For The Greater Good Of God [10]
This one is my favorite song off this album. I can't say anything other than "This captures the typical Iron Maiden feeling in one song" (yet again, I should add?). Includes pretty much all of the stylistic and musical elements - be it voice, guitars, or percussion - you could expect in an Iron Maiden song. Fantastic!

09 (07:23) Lord Of Light [8]
Again, a song starting out low and soft-spoken with some guitar play and light percussion accompaniment for about one and a half minutes, but you already know that it won’t stay that way. And you’re not mistaken: crystal clear the guitar sets in, Nico’s getting ready, too – and while Iron Maiden most definitely is not Power Metal à la Manowar, I was instantly reminded of Burning off their The Triumph Of Steel. That’s only for an instance, though, because the song stays true to itself and Bruce sirens straight away. Then turns into a “normal, standard” Maiden song. Interestingly enough, Iron Maiden uses reverberation on this one. I could be mistaken, but I think I haven’t heard it before and it’s a little unusual for’em.

10 (09:20) The Legacy [9]
This one’s creepy – way too “happy” and on the “joyful” side the way Bruce sings the opening sequence supported by acoustic guitar. Can you say “evil smile”? Reminds me of the way the whole Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son is wrapped into an intro and extro, whereas the melody itself instantly brought back memories of Christopher Young’s Hellbound: Hellraiser II soundtrack, title number 1a Second Sight Séance – nice and melodic with just a slight touch of impending doom and eternal damnation up ahead. The impression is furthered by strong guitars (and synthesizers?) before the song evolves into more maidenesque realms. Another favorite and classic-to-be(come).

All in all - a strong recommendation to pick it up on the next shopping trip!

I love Iron Maiden, and I am looking forward very much to A Matter of Life and Death. No joke. I'm listening to them right as I write this.

But I am listening to Dance of Death.

Why do you not like it? It is a great album. Don't get me wrong, I do dislike a few, like Age of Innocence or Montsegur, but overall the album is amazing. Paschendale sent chills down my spine and is possibly the second-best song I ever heard. Rainmaker was shown to me by the guy behind Generic Empire, which led me to get the entire album because it was so good. Dance of Death? Great song. I can picture Bruce Dickinson dancing on the fire as I listen to it. Many of the songs sound like taking Celtic ballads and turning them, with guitar masterwork and the vocal powers of Bruce Dickinson, into epic rock gems.

Not here to argue, we can all agree on liking Iron Maiden, but still, it does confuse me. I love that album. Iron Maiden does short songs very well, of course; look at Bring Your Daughter...To The Slaughter, which I named a thread for, but their long, epic songs like Paschendale, Rime of the Ancient Mariner and The Clansman are certainly among their best work, and Dance of Death overall sounds like that.

*puts Dance Of Death in the player and after 1-2 seconds of hesitation presses play*

You got me convinced to give it another try ;)
I believe the two factors which influenced me on that verdict were a) the overall feeling I get when I listen to the complete album front to back - and probably after Brave New World kicked so much ass and while this album might be good, I didn't consider it as good, hence the disappointment. And b) (minor reason) - it didn't look like a typical Iron Maiden album. I hated the artwork on the booklet's front and back and on the CD (and where you put it) as soon as I laid my eyes upon it. Somehow that looked wanna-be and half-heartedly cheap.

I'll give you an honest opinion on it as soon as I've listened to the songs again, so please come back.
Iron Maiden were good once, but now they are old and TEH SUKKETH!
Try and crucify me, i dare you ;)
Nah - I'll let Eddie devour you. That should suffice. (And thanks for the ;) - that helps to get the bearing!) But you can still pick options b) and c) if crucifiction is not your thing :p

Have you already listened to the new Motörhead Kiss Of Death? The review shows promise and I've already put it into my shopping basket but couldn't get myself to spend another 15 bucks. The last album I've heard from them was Overnight Sensation and it sounded... like they got piss-drunk and recorded a bad jamming session, greatly disappointing.

I think Dance of Death was good, does that make me evil, Nightmare?:p
No, 'course not! I listened to it last night after The Warmaster pledged for it.

Oh yeah, I said I would make a new assessment of that album. Well here't goes:

It is a semi-good album that one can enjoy, but it doesn't have any depth to it. I feel that while I didn't really dislike any of the songs, it's just that I can't get myself to really favor one either. Maybe No More Lies would be the one closest to that.
Then, for some odd reason, the whole album sounds - how do it put it? - flat?!? I don't know whether that's because of the way they've recorded it, but it doesn't really sound full.
And I realized yesterday what else I didn't like about it: That "fancy" player that wants to be installed when I want to listen to it on my computer. I always use WinAmp, but no, BMG/EMI needed to put a separate player on it. That sucked balls big time.
So, it's okay I guess, but not something to be really proud of.
Hate to say it, but I gave up on Maiden after 7th Son.....
And you missed one of their greatest albums, namely Fear Of The Dark? Shame on you ;) That album is what got it all started with me. Ah, the good ol' days - will they ever come back? :p

I mean, The Duelists, ALexander the Great, Ryhme, 11:58, Can I play with Madness, The Trooper, Aces High, Tailgunner, Mother Russia was a jam I must say even considering my opening statment, I just want fecking Maiden, not what ever the hell has been going on the last ten years or so.

Ouch! It hurts to hear that. If that is what you want - I honestly don't know whether the new album will satisfy your needs. It's pretty straight along the lines of FOTD and BNW. But what am I trying to tell you - head over to their homepage at ironmaiden.com and listen to some of the songs yourself.

This may be heresy, but... I must say, in some ways I like the last two albums more than their old ones (runs from the torches and pitchforks). They just seem heavier to me.

Which is, not to say that I don't like the old albums, because that would be a lie. I'm talking about differences in degrees of awesome here.

Of course what can one do but wind down the sunroof...in the driving rain and desperately find the only IM CD in the car...of which I had none !:((((

Did have a compo with # of da Beast on it...so got that going...and just followed the bus! As one does..

Although I was to turn right onto the M25 to hit the M11 towards Cambs I thought fek it! I'm here...I'm now...I'm kick'n ass wiv IM on me stereo and following the bus...I have no choice! must follow the bus!!

Past Luton, past Milton bloody Keanes....past Newport Pagnell...Bedford...

I'm thinking...hmmm this could be a mistake!

then the bus turns off at Northampton!

Yes!!!

I do the same..off the roundabout....down the road heading into Northampton...

Not heresy to me - when you listen to all the albums in progressive order, you will notice how Iron Maiden has developed over the years and still stayed true to themselves, a rare thing considering the business (worst example? Metallica)
Dance Of Dance is alright (as I've said before) but it simply doesn't have enough depth for my overall liking. Now, with this new one, I'd say that starts where Brave New World left off.
As for their live performances - I have never seen a band which plays their material as clear and close to the studio album as Iron Maiden does. It's remarkable indeed!
heh...

Was driving out of London one day....off Staples Corner (start of the M1..) and what was in front of me but....yep....the Maiden bus:)

Yes!!!

I do the same..off the roundabout....down the road heading into Northampton...

my fekking car died on me!!!! bastard!!!

gutted is not the word. turns out they were playing there...and i was about a half mile from the gig and stuck!

Bwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaa :(
That is sooo cool, and sooo tragic at the same time. Wish I had been there - I'd have personally pushed your car to the parking lot and we would have attended the concert together. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/GermanNightmare/EddieRocking.gifhttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/GermanNightmare/EddieHeadbanging.gif

I don't believe that I'll be able to attend any of their two (imagine that: two? WTF, seriously!) concerts in Germany. The one closer to me is already sold out (why? WHY?!?) and tickets via eBay have tripled their prices - but what really bugs me is that I could see Iron Maiden on my 30th birthday in the South of Germany (like, almost other end of Germany) and that concert is almost sold out - and I'd have to go by train and stay down there over night which totally is out of the question budget-wise.

Man, they've had concerts in Hamburg before - why don't they this time? They have a show in Dortmund (West) and Stuttgart (South) but none in the North - which is a serious mistake IYAM.

(This multiquote thing is really neat! I have yet to figure out how to merge posts - but will probably do so once the occasion arises)

Yeah I had no tickets but was hoping that as I was follwoing the bus I could blag some tickets...maybe bring up the impact of Paschendale on the war or something else that was historical :)

Then the car died...eventually the AA arrived (this was way way back before 'rapid response) and fixed my car but I knew there was no chance of getting in

Suck to hear about the gigs in Germany! prices are crazy...one reason why I rarely go to watch big name acts..

Lemmy played for 'em back then...its a spacey prog rock band...but some really good sounds...but not really metal...but worth listening too...

Dammnation Alley, Motorhead, Sonic Attack decent tracks...

Seriously??

Wasnt that one of the ones without Dickinson?

That album blew ass.

I believe thats the one that nearly got them dropped from thier record label.

Both Dianno albums are great, as is everything up to 7th son of a 7th son...
After that...its a decent song here and there, or a decent riff here and there...

But thats it.

Hey, I like Dance of Death! There are some really deep and awesome songs on DoD. Have you ever listened to Paschendale, or Face in the Sand. So Awesome. But yes, I am elated at the new album's release. I live in the states, so i've got to wait another week to get it.

Good one, too! I noticed myself 'singing' "Out of the darkness brighter than a thousand sons" with my inner voice while not even thinking about it - always a good sign that the song has caught on. http://www.studip.uni-goettingen.de/pictures/smile/atomrofl.gif

No, that was the last one with Bruce. X-Factor and Virtual XI are the ones with Blaze. (Biggest problem with him was that the songs, especially the ones on X-Factor, were not "designed" for him. I actually like the songs from his album Silicon Messiah with BLAZE very much, those songs match his vocal abilities far better).
No Prayer For The Dying is one of the weakest albums in my opinion, Dance Of Death is far better than that one, although it does have some very good songs on it.
I like the songs on the Iron Maiden and Killers, but the recording quality is lousy compared to the later works of the band - even on vinyl.
UP THE IRONS!

As I've stated before, not only do I own it, I have actually listened to it - and wasn't really fond of it. No More Lies would be my favorite song off the Dance Of Death. One week and I hope you'll enjoy the new one as much as I do.
