UK Government Shows Impeccable Taste.

It seems like people in the UK won't get to ride around on those awful Segway things in public anymore. I agree with this. Not long after they were released, NYC took the sensible step of banning them from sidewalks which effectively prevented them being used pretty much, tho' you see the odd one. If only the city council had gone as far as HM government.

Anway, well done UK for showing some taste.

Well no one likes NYC and no one likes Britain. If people want to ride them in Britain, they should be allowed to. This is interferring in the private lives of people.

This is a disgusting move by Britain.

I would have one myself and use it wherever I could, especially at college. It beats walking. I do not mind if they are banned on roadways. That I can understand but to deny the people the right to ride them in Britain is idiotic.

they're as dangerous if not moreso on a pavement as a bicycle is (and they're not allowed on pavements here either though ppl ignore this). It's a motorised vehicle that you have to balance on. A certain amount of pedestrian collision is inevitable. Especially when used by damn crazy kids!

If they are that safe why should you wear safety gear? I see no probs with them being on cycle paths (which aren't everywhere so it'd be kinda pointless having one). In the hands of a responsible adult might be ok but someone who isn't could cause mayhem.

I don't. But generally cos the user can have accidents and hurt themselves. Accidents can involve others though.

Plus, the way I see it is you got legs, stop being lazy and use them. If you're travelling any real distance get a bike. How long does the battery on these things last for anyhow?

You've obviously never strolled along London's Oxford Street or Regent Street.
You couldn't get much more people on a pavement, just trying to cut through the crowds is a nightmare, let alone with one of them.

if it's that busy you physically won't be able to go 12 mph, assuming you felt comfortable at top speed in the first place (which most people wouldn't). and since anyone on the ground can very easily stop it with one hand and no effort, no, not really. joggers are more dangerous. or fat people going down a gentle slope.

But surely if it's that busy all it takes is for someone to jostle you when you're riding one of those things and the gyros are going to send you caroming off in a random direction over someone's feet? Not to mention that they'll take up a lot more pavement space, making it a lot busier than it was before.

Brakes don't stop anything instantly. This is why cars get into the so-called "rear-enders", sometimes fatally.

done and done. it is better at stopping than people are, it's hard to drive at top speed anywhere but really big open areas, most people feel comfortable on them at speeds where stopping distance is negligible, they are ridiculously easy to maneuver, and actually seemed overly safety oriented to me.

they are less dangerous to others than runners, and vastly less dangerous than bikes and skateboards (to say nothing of mopeds, motorcycles, cars, and trucks).

runners can go as fast or faster than a segway can and have worse handling. if we are using straight calculations of momentum to define "dangerousness" then segways aren't even gonna be on the list. or do you only walk in areas that don't have multi-ton suv's travelling at around 25 mph mere inches away?

I don't tend to walk on places with SUVs on the sidewalk.

There is no evidence that runners have worse handling than a segway. That issue is moot.

They are, however, heavier. And therefore capable of much more damage. It's not a point that can be disputed.

Why ban it from the roads? It can't be because it's too slow. Isn't 12mph about average for a pedal bike...

This is just the move of a bureaucrat who gets paid too much for his job, but not enough to buy a segway.

But at 12mph they shouldn't be allowed on the pavement. Too fast.
