Fuck it anyway.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Apple is recalling 1.8 million battery packs for its iBook and PowerBook notebook computers due to an overheating problem, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday.

The iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 models are the two Apple products affected by the recall.

The cells in the lithium-ion batteries were produced by Sony, which also produced the batteries that forced Dell to recall 4.1 million notebooks earlier in August.

Can't anyone makes bloody batteries anymore? Humph. Someone in Sony is going to bite it...big this time.

If my laptop battery gets recalled I'll be jubilant. Of course, it's an HP, so there haven't been any recalls on it yet. After two years it's been losing it's ability to hold charge as long as it used to. A new one would be awesome.

Lithium-ion batteries are not easy to make.

And the higher the energy density of any battery, the greater the likelihood of overheating and fire if a short develops.

I've got one of each. Guess I'd better check with the local Apple store.

What the hell is wrong with Sony? Honestly, this level of incompetence is unacceptable especially considering Sony is a well-established company with years of experience in manufacturing and R&D. But then again, when I look at companies like GM who've been in business for 90 years and still can't get cars right, I'm not surprised.

I find it ironic that my Dell battery, manufactured in China, is of better quality than the ones made by Sony in Japan. How things have changed...

See? You pay the Japanese workers better, and they start getting ideas in their head...

Better off with the inmates in China who do this as slave abor. At least they're motivated to produce a quality item.

It's the job security, if they screw up, they aren't going to get fired, unlike in China where there's a line a mile long to work at high paying jobs at technology plants.

Competition improves quality.

In Japan, there is very little competition compared to the US or China and many jobs are lifetime employment...you can obviously see what that does to product quality. The quality of goods China's been making have been rising along with their wages. We're talking anywhere from 20-100% per year in most cases...the slaves are slowly becoming the masters now that they've got growth and investment of their own.

It's like the Chinese central banker said: "First we were afraid of the wolf (the US), then we wanted to dance with the wolf, and now we want to be the wolf."

I could be here forever ranting on about that one!!!!!!!!!! :D

Everything I've ever had made by Sony has been shit, none of the items I've had (except the original walkman) has lasted. Basically they're about cheap electricals marketed as "premium product". Same as Nike trainers - made cheap in a sweatshop and sold at high prices (not sure if that still happens though).

As a result I avoid their products like the plague!!!!!!

It's giving me a headache :(

they aren't Dell batteries or Apple batteries, they are Sony batteries.

Sony is the cause, not the computer companies

Oh I know its not the computer companies. I was just "surprised" that it transcended across two companies the way it did. Looks to be a systemic problem at worst, at best a really bad batch.

My cousin did tech support for them when he lived in Buffalo, and he had pretty much the same opinion. He said of their laptops that if they could find a corner to cut, they not only cut it, they slashed it like a pissed-off woman with a straight razor.

When I go to my local electrical retailers they all seem to have the same opinion as I do. Sony=poor quality. Saying that all electrical companies do it I'm sure.
They do make a fine game console, however. I've had my Playstation 2 for five years now, and nary a quibble with it. Of course, I'm not what you would call a "gamer."

Update:

Sony said it anticipates no further recalls of battery packs using these particular battery cells, and said it has introduced additional safeguards into its battery manufacturing process to address the problem.

I'm not a playstation fan either. Console's ok. Newer versions of ps2 are teeny which I kinda like though I hate the controller. PS3 does nothing more than the others for me, just at a higher price is all. I have 2 friends with PS2's that have broken recently.

Sony's batteries seem to work just like Sony's rootkits - they're poorly made and inspire people to stop using Sony products. I can't quite decide if this is a good or bad thing. :)

Good for you! Don't give your hard earned/mugged money to those corporate types! I know a lot of the slimline ps2's had problems with dvd playback (may have just been a batch though) and it's crap that it has no off switch (cost cutting again  )

Howthe heck can they not have a off-switch?

Isn't it basic construction of electronic device you have an on and off-switch (combined in some cases)? Or did they think that once you turn it on its so good you don't want to turn it off?

It's not that GM cars are made badly - in fact check out the initial build quality on a mercedes or VW sometime - but that the designs are shit.

This is because american colleges are shit. Particularly the business schools who train the management that foster this crap.

Nothing to do with the blue collar though.

You have to turn them off at the plug!

Space saving/cost cutting! An off switch would double it's size!!!!! :p
You're being a little vague here. It does have an on/off button. It turns off the machine, but does not cut the power to the machine.

Ahh, that makes more sence :)

The problem I had with PS2 (first version) was that it made a lot of noise (from the fan I presume) so therefore I was never interested in it. Don't know how much the next versions sounded. PS3 on the other side looks nice, but the cost is waaaay to high for a consol according to me...

1. The slimline that I have is extremely quiet. I think the official figure I saw for both the slimlines and the new PS3 is 23 Db. Pretty quiet.

2. That's why I'm going to mug someone for their PS3 instead of paying for it. It's the American thing to do.

We had 6 Mercedes Vito's at work (All brand new) cos they kept breaking, mainly with ECU probs which led to it cutting out/losing steering and unable to start. This caused a few problems in some interesting situations. 2 had fuel injector problems. We spoke to our insurance guy and he said he'd had lots of similar reports. Jeremy Clarkson mentions merc's current quality loss on occasion too.
