one of those crappy D.T courses you have to do
Although most employers say C is the lowest pass grade they look for in a CV. Double Science is the majority, the one which most normal people take, and triple is taking three differernt sciences and learning an etra subject in the same time.
Apparently, a person who gets 5 A-C grades at GCSE earn £300,000 more in their lifetime then those who dont

I feel old... jesus wept, I got my GCSEs 10 years ago this summer!
Of course, in them days, we still divided science into physics, biology, and chemistry, and english into english language and english literature... <falls asleep and loses control of bowels>
Congrats on completion of them! What's everyone's plans for future? More study, work, anyone's result mean they inherit a weird bequest by a crazy (dead) relative...?

It varies from school to school, most do the triple award, mine did the double award, students generally don't get any kind of choice in the matter.

I got a slap around the head as my ''reward'' for my GCSE results, about four years ago. I'm surprised someone on NS has actually done worse than me. Although I did do a little revision for maths, science and english so I managed to get two Bs and a C. The rest was all Ds and Es. I managed to do even worse at college, I only went to avoid real work. I've regreted doing so poorly at school though (two years working in crappy minimum wage jobs will do that to you). Luckily I've been given a second chance and I'm starting university in september. I have the motivation to do well now after screwing up my life once. If it turns out that I was not just lazy but I'm stupid as well, I might be joining you in the army next year. Hopefully things will work out for me though. Good luck to everyone who has just left high school, whatever you want to do in life.
Remember kids: Do well at school!

They're actually totally wrong.
In order of very good to shit, it goes :
A* (great) - Pass + college
A (very good) - Pass + college
B (good) - Pass + able to do the subject at A-level standard
C (satisfactory) - Pass + you need 5 of these or higher to do any A-levels, and 8 of these or higher to 5 A-levels
D (just below average) - Pass
E (poor) - Pass
F (awful)
G (terrible)
U (cheated / forgot to put your name on the paper / unreadable / so bad we're not even giving you a 'G' for this )

Why do D and E qualify you for a pass if they don't even get you to the next level? Also, is there a percentage leveled with each letter grade?
This (http://www.vuw.ac.nz/home/studying/grades.html) is what my university uses, which I think is fairly standard here and similar to the marks given out at the old school certificate level. Getting a 'K' grade at uni is the one that would probably piss you off the most.

Actually U just means Ungraded. It could be that it was so low you can't get a U. Theres also N i think (not marked).

Um, that's a good question... Looks like I've got it wrong. When I did them, I think there were letter grades A* to E, F for Fail, U for Ungraded and N for the hell of it.

Thanks, that's nice to hear :)
@ Monkeypimp
Because an "F" is a showing that you basically learned nothing, whereas an "E" and a "D" are more to do with performing poorly despite generally having the knowledge, and simply applying it in a rather poor way.
I believe there is a percentage involved in the totals, yes, but I'm not quite sure what they are, I'm afraid :(
@ The other Hydesland post
G isn't ungraded, it's just "you are a retard of the highest order".
"N" has been replaced with "U", which stands for "ungraded/not marked".

What is your system?
Upper secondary school is called "Gymnasiet" and it's the grades from that one uses to get into university. It works like this: During gymnasiet you take a bunch of courses (each worth an amount of course points) over a three year period. Depending of what programme and school you went to, that can mean you have upwards of 30 grades. All these grades are worth "points" depending on how good they are. All your grade points are added, multiplied by how many course points you have that each grade represents, and divided by the sum of the course points you took (or something like that). You end up with a grade point average between 0 and 20. 0.0 = you didn't get a single passing grade (moron), 10.0 = your average was "pass" (you scraped by), 15.0 = your average was "passed well" (so, you applied yourself) and 20.0 = you got the highest available grades in all your courses (you freak!).
I had 20.0. :)

So essentially 50% is still a pass, just like here..

That's kind of like the US. (Well, except that our schools are untrustworthy, so you also have to take an independant aptitude test as well). But the theory is similar.
Baguetten

That's a flawed comparison. It ends up being 10 because the passing grade ("Godkänt" or "G") is worth 10 grade points. A "passed well" grade ("Väl Godkänt" or "VG") is worth 15, and a "passed very well" ("Mycket väl godkänt" or "MVG") is worth 20.
So, the average of "10" just indicates that your average grade was "G." It doesn't reflect a percentage of "pass" courses - you could have failed several, but gotten MVG in several other, for instance - so you can't say something like "50%."
Also, the most usual percentage for "G" on exams and assignments and stuff like that is actually 65%. 80% for "VG." 90% for "MVG."

The "SAT?" We have a sort of equivalent to it ("Högskoleprovet"), but it's offered as a sort of second chance for those who got bad grades. Universities have quotas for their courses, and usually 50% are filled with GPA students, 25% with Högskoleprovet students and the 25 other percent are divided between an alternate, adult schooling system and a weighted Högskoleprov that takes into account working experience.

Yes, the SAT.
More reliance is placed upon it here because of the lack of uniform national standards. It's not really very fair though putting so much emphasis on one three hour exam. Especially as it doesn't really test anything except vocabulary and some math.
