BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israel's foreign minister said Wednesday the situation in Lebanon was "explosive" while Syria's president says the deployment of international troops along the Syria-Lebanon border would be a "hostile" act.

Yes. I guess Syria doesn't want any UN peacekeepers to enforce any UN resolutions in the area.

Assad's getting his panties in a bunch because the international troops would make it more difficult for Syria to send troops into Lebanon? That's what it sounds like.
"They will close their borders for all traffic in case U.N. troops will be deployed along the Lebanon-Syria border," Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja said after meeting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem in Helsinki. Finland holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.
"This closing of the border would certainly have negative consequences for the people living in the region," Tuomioja told reporters after his meeting with Moallem.
You're telling me. There are a lot of Syrians who work in Lebanon, mostly as fairly cheap labor. In light of the recent problems between Lebanon and Israel, as well, it would make it harder for people in Lebanon to get out if bombing were to start again. But I think Syria would reopen the border in that case.

I doubt the UN would close the border to workers.
They are, however, extremely likely to inspect trucks to make sure Syria isn't delivering weapons to Hezbollah.
Syria isn't going to win against the UN peacekeeping nations, Israel, and Lebanon combined. If they want their troops massacred and their nation utterly crushed, let them attack but otherwise they would be well advised to sit back, shut up, and let the UN do its job.
Syria's delusions of grandeur are going to cost it dearly if it tries anything...Damascus has been trying for years to get back in to power politics in the Middle East, and they would be mind-bogglingly stupid to sacrifice that in a suicide war against these forces.

Assad threatened to close the border, not the UN.

Oh noes a peacekeeping force is going to attack Syria!
I'm sure it's because they really just don't want to be impeeded on the rearming of Hiz'bulla.
Why does it seem that peoples IQ's lower once they get into power? I'm talkign about pretty much every govt. around the world. Yes, even yours.

Because he doesn't want them along the Lebanon-Syria border.
Where they will interfere with the resupply of munitions to Hezbollah.
