making something out of nothing
Nice to see that people are so bored that there being only 9 homosexual charactes on network TV this season makes an article. Really now, how about some actual news instead of making something when there is nothing to begin with?

It could be because there's little to report, or it could be that the author is trying to get the public's attention focused on more gay tv characters. Or it could be that Mel Gibson hasn't made any anti-semitic remarks lately, and there's nothing to talk about.

Out of 679 series lead or supporting characters on the six major broadcast networks in the new season, roughly 1.3 percent are gay, lesbian or bisexual, according to the group's annual study. The figure last year was 1.4 percent.
Rofl. Stupidity at its greatest.

I'm sure there won't be any peace until 1 in every 10 characters on TV is gay. After all, that's what TV viewers want right? Lots and lots of gay people?

I think we should aim for 50% lesbian. *nod*

Whatever keeps the viewers sure. I'm sure there are parts of America where people definitely don't want gay characters. But my point is that the author of the article may have had an agenda; to rail at 'the man' for not being gay enough.
Personally, I don't care if 9 out of every 10 characters are gay on TV. I don't watch that much of it. It would just mean that Jack Bauer would fight a lot of gay terrorists.

Damn. I'll need to contact the Media Subversion branch of the LGBT Army. Guess our efficiency has dropped due to immoral conduct. Again.

It's the TV News section. If you are looking for world events to be reported in the TV News section the error lies with you, not with the source. The writer didn't do the study, a gay and lesbian rights group did the study. If you where expecting a group focused on gay and lesbian issues to do a study of world events rather than a study on how they are represented in the popular media, again the fault lies with you and not the organization.
They are a segment of the population. Representation is an important part of society, something we learned a long time ago from Amos & Andy to Julia to Good Times. It makes sense that someone watches it, and it makes sense that it would be reported as a short article in the TV News section, being about TV and News. If you where looking to see what pretty white girl was in peril, there are other sections of the news for you to look at. May I suggest in the future you pay attention to what section of the news you are reading when trying to find global events or the like.

Not currently. The guy who played Drew Carey's brother on the Drew Carey show was a transvestite for a while.

OH NO, its the down fall of society. they are losing the amount of gay characters.
i am upset about this. they really dont depict another of certain groups on TV. i want more shows to start depicting Nazi's in a possitive manner.

Well at least the US TV market has some realistic portrayals of GLBTs.
You could be stuck with the infamous Japanese celeb character "Razor Ramon HG (http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/face/archive/news/2005/20050720p2g00m0dm024000c.html)" ("Hard Gay")...
