By this point last year, there had been 11 named tropical storms, including 4 full fledged hurricanes, and were just days away from Katrina. At this point in this season we have 4 named storms and no hurricanes.

So much for the predictions of a season of well above average activity...

We're getting more rain in the Southwest, though, which is good ;)

We have four now? When did that form? Last time I checked, Chris was the last named storm.

That's the problem with making easily understood predictions. You run the risk of egg on your face.

These science johnies should take a leaf from the sybil.

I notice the graph is wrong. In 1995, there were 19 named storms out of 21 that formed.

Err... maybe I'm blind, but I only see data for 1933, 1944-1996 average, 2004, 2005, and 2006... Please point out where this graph shows specific data about 1995.

That's great news. A mild hurricane season will keep the oil and gas fields in the Gulf producing and enable us to restore the ones still offline from Katrina and Rita. It's also good because the areas hit by the hurricanes will be able to continue reconstruction without having to deal with another barrage of hurricanes. All in all, everyone wins from a mild hurricane season.

But...Al Gore told us that..that...The Hurricanes will get worse! Also he told us about the dangers of manbearpig! After all Al Gore cares about the earth, why else would he fly his private jet around telling us about the danger of global warming, then goes home to his manson which sucks up enough power to power a small town. Umm.... GLOBAL WARMING AND MANBEARPIG!

Err... no. Hurricanes don't happen on on single day.

Andrew was an "organised storm by August 16th and a named storm by August 17thy. Andrew's duration was August 16-28th.

Oh, and Corny - yes there have been 4 named storms in 2006 - did you forget Zeta? (Weak attempt to cover my miscounting. As I said a few days ago "(dammit, Jim) I'm an English teacher, not a math teacher!" ;))

There were more named storms in 1995 than there were in 2004. It would make more logical sense to post 1995 over 2004 on the graph.

This is what has me shaking my head. It may be worse since the creation of the PRC but was it its worse overall?

what!?!?! that's "unpossible!" (to use a well worn cliche)

and to think, those fucking bastards raised oil prices on "speculation" that this season was going to be worse than last year.... is it lowering? why the hell not!?!?!/!

And 2004 was only 2 years ago, making a closer comparison than 11 years ago, which makes more sense to me.
