Sleep!

Sleep that knits up the ravell'd sleave of care,
The death of each day's life, sore labour's bath,
Balm of hurt minds, great natures second course,
Chief nourisher in life's great feast. (2.2.34-37) MacBeth to Lady MacBeth
So, as I head off to bed tonight, I'd like to get some people's thoughts on sleep.
I know I've always had a bit of an adversarial relationship with sleep, with insomnia being a regular experience for me, and rarely have I got enough sleep in a night. I enjoy getting a good sleep, and I feel I really need more sleep, but, well, I cannot seem to get it.

sleep is never overrated. I only got about an hour last night, so I came home and crashed all day. And now I'm too awake to get back to sleep, and have work tomorrow. :(

For me, when I want to really sleep, It's a matter of either getting up earlier, so that I'm tired when I try to go to bed, or sleeping later, so I'm tired when I try to go to bed.
Otherwise I get no sleep at all.

I just sleep when my body wants to, and to hell with schedules.
This means that most of the time, I'm up all night and sleep during the day. But occasionally, usually for no apparent reason, there'll be a few days where this reverses and I'll sleep at night for a short while. Then my hours will spontaneously return to normal. These switches are irresistable, too--if I don't get sleep when my body wants to, I don't get sleep, and soon any hope of activity is out the window. I can never just "decide to go to bed sooner" as some would suggest. If I do make the fool mistake of trying to sleep while all signals are calling for alertness, my still-active brain punishes me with nightmares, which wake me right back up.
I also can't nap. A nap makes me feel much worse than just staying up. Once I'm asleep, I need to be able to stay that way until the demand is fully satisfied. How some people can nap for 20 minutes and feel refreshed, I'll never know. Whenever I try it, I end up in a fog and with my body screaming for the other 7 hours and 40 minutes until I finally go to sleep for real.
As for sleep in general, I wish I didn't need 8 hours at a stretch. It seems like such a waste of time to have to sleep for so long. But I feel like I've been hit by a truck when I don't get it. So it's a necessary evil.

Every time I wake up from a nap I feel like punching someone in the nose. They make me irritable.
What is this "sleep" you all speak of?

Being plagued with insomnia for the last month, I usually go to sleep by:
A: Popping extra strength tylenol with whiskey
B: Read
C: Don't sleep for 48 hours, then sleep when it's time the next day.

One doesn't need sleep when one has World of Warcraft.

You realize that if you take too much Melatonin your body just flushes it out of your system, keeping you awake for hours, right? Melatonin overdosing isn't lethal, but boy does it suck.

Behind the Wall of Sleep
Visions cupped within the flower,
Deadly petals with strange power,
Faces shine a deadly smile,
Look upon you at your trial
Chill that numbs from head to toe,
Icy sun with frosty glow,
Words that glow read to your sorrow,
Words that glow read no tomorrow
Feel your spirit rise with the breeze,
Feel your body fallin' to its knees
Take your wall of remorse, Takes your body to a corpse
Takes your body to a corpse Takes your body to a corpse
Sleeping wall of remorse,
Takes your body to a corpse
Now from darkness there springs light,
Wall of sleep is cool and bright,
Wall of sleep is lying broken,
Sun shines in, you have awoken
Oh sorry...thats "Behind the WALL of Sleep"
Mea culpa...

I don't know how this got on my screen, I guess I clicked it back in the optimistic hours. I'm replying directly to the OP, and apologizing in ignorance of the subsequent posts.
The daylight hours are a gruelling and bitter trial, to earn a good night's sleep.
One must eat, and if not a roof over the head, the right to be undisturbed somewhere must be earned, for it is a cruel hegemony we have made over this simple thing: a night's sleep. Crueler even than the gauntlet we run to eat, as long as garbage bins can be picked from as well as thrown into ... which may not be long.
To sleep somewhere, one must own the place, or pay for the right to sleep in the place. And no, don't envy the wild animals of the earth, for they are losing both place to sleep, and food to eat, year by year and increasingly. To be born human may be a horrible fate, but the alternatives are worse.
Ah, sleep, that knits up the ravell'd sleeves of care.
Mmm. Sleep. Goodnight.

I rarely get much sleep, mostly because there aren't enough hours in the day to do all the stuff I have to do, I end up at night making lists in my head for the next day, wondering if I forgot something and worrying that I might not be rested enough the next day and screw something up.
I have been in a lot of pain lately, and while I have a high tolerance for pain, it's just hard to relax and find a comfortable position to sleep in.
