COMMENTARY: Good job. Not sure about the troops involved-Possibly Canadian, British, or American, but who cares? Good job, and good hunting. 71 less bad guys sucking up oxygen in Afghanistan.

Up to 71 Taliban killed in southern Afghanistan

2 hours, 38 minutes ago

Around 71 Taliban and at least five Afghan police or soldiers have been killed when Afghan and NATO-led troops beat back a late-night attack by scores of rebels in southern Afghanistan, officials said.

Taliban fighters stormed a bazaar in the notoriously volatile Panjwayi district of Kandahar province late Saturday, district governor Niaz Mohammad Sarhadi told AFP.

As they clashed with police, reinforcements from the Afghan army and police and NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) surrounded the area and confronted the attackers, a resident said.

After the fighting 34 Taliban bodies were found scattered in the town, the governor said. Eleven were found in a nearby village and there were reports that attackers may have taken another 25 bodies away with them, he said.

The commander of Afghan army forces in the south, General Rahmatullah Raufi, gave the same figures. An Afghan soldier was also "martyred", he said.

A district police officer who did not want to be identified said four police were killed, three wounded and three missing.

ISAF confirmed it had responded to the attack, including with airplanes. A figure of 30-40 enemy killed was "reasonable" but ISAF was still assessing the casualties, said spokesman Major Quentin Innes.

Panjwayi, about 35 kilometres (20 miles) west of Kandahar city, has seen several major clashes between security forces and the Taliban.

On August 3 a suicide bomber killed 21 civilians in an attack in the bazaar that appeared aimed at a passing ISAF convoy. It was one of the bloodiest in a stream of suicide blasts in Afghanistan carried out by the insurgents.

The hardliners have been waging a revolt since being removed from government in late 2001.

Ah, I see; what do you think will happen tomorrow, though? It's like fighting a hydra - kill 71 here, but just as many'll appear somewhere else later, inspired by tales of the fighting. Seems a bit redundant to celebrate this side of the war on terror, I mean.

I did use raghead a lot in reference to the bath towel garbed ak pumping & RPG toting Anti-American militants, however people here shatted kittens, so to be nice I layed off that and used Hadjis. They threw fits over that...oh well.

I even posted pictures of the typical garb of an arabic militant. AK Mag vest and towel over the head.

A British soldier has been killed in a gun battle with Taleban forces in southern Afghanistan. The soldier, who has not been named, was killed in the volatile Helmand province at about noon local time (830 BST), the Ministry of Defence said. He was serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, from Essex.

"The soldier died as a result of injuries sustained during the contact. Three other British soldiers received minor injuries," said an MoD spokesman.

Twenty UK armed forces personnel have died in Afghanistan since 2001.

The family of the soldier was in the process of being informed of the death, the MoD spokesman said.

Afghanistan is going through its bloodiest period since the fall of the Taleban five years ago. Much of the fighting has been concentrated in the south.

About 70 Taleban fighters have been killed in clashes with Nato-led troops and Afghan security forces there, according to local officials.

But a purported Taleban spokesman claimed only 12 fighters had been killed.

It's not the duration of the battle that counts. It's how many are dead on each side when you're done.

Looks a little imbalanced here. Taliban don't have advanced body armor and high quality weapons with optics.

I don't know about fun, but it was instructive - glad I saw it :)

But did they or didn't they blow up the mosque in the end (well, about 2/3s through, actually, but you know what I mean!)? They kept changing terminology for it - mosque, building, target - as their priorities switched, so it was hard to tell.

Also fascinating to see how easy it is to blow people up without thinking of them as, well, people - they're just littlle white dots called 'targets' on the screen. Not like earlier wars, where you see your enemy's guts/charred bodies - just clean dots and explosions.

You don't have to do the good/evil thing.

I think of it the way the Mongols did. You cooperate, and we get along fine. You resist, and we slaughter you and everything in your region.

Of course, the Mongols never pretended they were anything but barbaric savages...

Huh?

We're watching a video of an AC130 targeting a Taliban/AQ Camp in Afghanistan right? I've seen the video a few times. Is this one of hezzbollah rocketing haifa, or 9/11 victims jumping off of the Twin towers?I'd find people making similar comments about those equally disgusting.

On the contrary. While they may not have put out bullshit PR about themselves, they did carry a large retinue of Chinese scholars on every mission. They would pilfer the libraries and other buildings for art and literature before the Mongols burned the places to the ground.

They also set up very favorable conditions for merchants along their communication routes, and were exemplars of religious freedom. If you were of any religion in areas under their control, you could practice, knowing that if people of anothe religion attacked you the Mongols would kill them.

No, he was only a saucier.

That's the point. USA is selling his war on terror to the world saying that they are sacrificing themselves for "The Freedom of the world". At least ye olde Genghis was honest, he was a barbarian looking for conquest and that's it.

The Mongols had some clever hangers-on, who they didn't mind tagging along, so long as they weren't in the way. They also instituted some tough iron-glove policies.

Neither of which alters the fact that they were barbaric and savage... and didn't pretend otherwise.

Yes, which is why I admire them. They were survivors, unclouded by conscience, or delusions of morality.

And they left a legacy that stood the test of time.

No - wait... they were in a flash in the pan, that vanished into obscurity the moment their charismatic leadership was gone... and left almost nothing behind them to celebrate their passing, except a trail of rape and murder.

Maybe I want something better than a trail of tears.

Ah, but if you combine the Mongol methods with a superpower that allows liberty at home, and a method of replacing leadership over time...

It would be interesting to see how one could pair 'liberty at home' with "unclouded by conscience, or delusions of morality"... the two ideals just don't seem to gel.

Of course - first we'd have to find a nation that DID 'allow liberty at home'.

At any rate, modern governments are much better at surviving changes of head of state than the Mongols. And they have much more lethal weaponry.

Let's see...

What did the UN do about Kosovo..... nothing. Only after NATO moved first did they "approve" anything.

What did the UN do about Rwanda.... nothing.

What did the UN do about the gassing and killing of over 100,000 Kurds by Saddam (for which he is now on trial)... nothing.

Words. Empty, useless, meaningless words. The UN (and by extension the international community, and I include the US in this) are willing to sell the souls of millions in exchange for the right to blow platitudes out of their asses.

Because they failed to do anything, they must have obviously supported it.

I wonder though: Is this your argument in favor of a strategy similar to that used by the Mongols? If yes, it's a pretty poor argument. If not, it's a pretty poor UN bashing hijack...

I doubt if anyone would stop the US from using Mongol tactics in places that weren't directly near their home countries.

There would be a lot of weeping and wailing, but no one would stop it.

I'd love to see US soldiers riding around on horses, shooting arrows from the saddle. Raping and killing willy-nilly!

Too bad Mongol tactics have been obsolete for at least a century.

Unless you meant Mongol strategy. No, you couldn't have. As a soldier, you wouldn't make that mistake.

I think you know what I meant.

On a tactical level, it would mean killing everyone in sight by use of infantry.

Oh, but don't people accuse US and Israeli forces of that anyway?

If we're going to be accused of it, we might as well do it.

Um you might want to check those history books. The Mongols forged both China and Russia. That's a pretty enduring testament.

How can a Christian oppose morality? It just makes no sense at all.

But do you really oppose it? You think that intervention in Europe to end the holocaust was the right thing to do, don't you? You have said this before.
