2,996: A Tribute to the Victims of 9/11
Bloggers honor the innocent victims of that awful day...

The idea is simple, but powerful: have a special tribute for each victim of 9/11, with each tribute being created by a different blogger. The 2,996 Project was started to coordinate the creation of the tributes, and that's what the site below is all about. Here you can sign up to make a tribute yourself, on your blog (you will be randomly assigned a victim). You can also browse or search through either the victims that have already been assigned, or those that have not -- and you can get pointers to more information on all of them.

Yeah, and stop the chain mail-like spam. That's all this is. Do something on your blog, send this to so and so many people, blah blah...

Why just 9/11?

Why not every single individual killed in attacks, wars, sectarian violence, road accidents or global starvation during this millenium?

Neat idea, but the scope is limited to the extent of being politically biased.

Why limit anything. Lets have a personal tribute on total strangers blogs for absolutely everyone who has been recorded as dying in the whole span of human history.

Oh, and I wonder what the familes of the victims would think about a random blogger being entrusted with theri son/daughter/mother/father's tribute.

The phrase "You will randomly be assigned a victim" in the description works on multiple levels.

Looks like the 'rememberance' for this year has started already. 11/9 sucked. We get it. We don't need weeks of this every year.

There's only 22 mourning days till 11/9. Time to wash your flags and start painting the stars and stripes on everything you own, other wise the terrorists win.

I'll go celebrate the jobs the USM is doing right now to prevent another 9/11. And go have a big shoot with some buds, roast up some hogs...have a good time in memory of the two.

Sounds like fun...one or two years ago I found this 5k run that honors the dead 9/11 fireman and policemen. If I don't already have work or an XC meet the day it's on I'll probably go again.

I rode my bike for 22 miles...that was long.

I suck at running, 6 and a half minute miles. I'm slow.

What kind of tribute is that? It should be a 9.11k run. Duh.

Hey, if you're going to be using metric units like kilometres, then you have to use EU date formats as well. Otherwise it's just nonsensical. Hence, 11.9.

Oh, that was just a play on you saying "not for long" and me having written "living." I initially thought it a crude joke, but it may have ended it up being ironically subtle.

One can hope for sense. Derisory as it would be, that hope. :\

If we took all the internet blogs, memorials, tributes, threads, posts, and sundry videos about 9/11, we could use them to rebuild the towers.

Frankly, it's sad.

It was just some buildings and a couple thousand lives. Big freakin' deal. Worse is done by a hurricane or well placed tsunami.

Still doesn't have the impact of "Remember the Alamo". Nobody cares anymore. Just let it go, man. Let it go!

There are probably as many 9/11 (11/9) tributes as there are porn sites now.

Sorry, I will be busy remembering the 11 million children under 5 years old that die every single year. For some reason those figures depress me more than those of 11/9.

What about a 2996 km run? That's even more patriotic. All participants could don hairshirts and flagellate themselves (Fass, pay attention: I said flagellate, not fellate) 911 times as well.
That'll make them feel all smug and superior.

Actually, seeing as this is America surely the most patriotic fat-ass American thing to do would be to eat 911 burgers.
