Going to Afghanistan

Surf Shack

If I go, of which there is about a 97% chance, I will be cooperating with elements of the 82nd Airborne in training Afghani soldiers and hunting down remaining Taliban elements in the mountain caves etc.

So, to get to the point, I am psyched! This should be a really awesome mission, and I'll be guaranteed to really kick some ass. Also, I'll have 0 guard duty because I'm in a critical MOS and they need us on the gunline right now.

Anyways, anyone else got a tour coming up? Any good stories? Or questions for that matter if anyone has any for me, or vice versa?

EDIT: Removed military info which was (correctly) pointed out as being inappropriate for public blogging

make friends with an old lady before you go. There is an old lady at our church that sends care packages to her neighbor's nephew who is in Iraq, I helped her pack and ship some when she was sick, she sends lots of neat stuff over.

Naw, Iraq was pretty fun, at least once we started "acquiring" food and supplies to spruce up RP 6, which was home for us.

And I volunteered this time, and I wouldn't have done that if I didn't know I would enjoy it. A lot of soldiers really like it, but the ones that don't get the most media coverage.

Taliban has more presence than mere mountain caves. Don't get surprised by the dissonance between what u r told here (especially by those who appear on TV and print media) and what u see there on the ground.

Oh and try to play some buzkushi while u r there...:p

That said, I do not wish you death or injury, nor do I do so to anyone on any side. So, here's hoping your stay is an uneventful one, and that the girls/guys/both sexes (whichever you prefer) in the Swedish troupe are nice to you, should you come across them.

My unit is attached to the 218th Brigade out of Newberry, SC. We just officially got our alert that a mission in Afghanistan from April 07-April 08 is a go. A stop-loss is in effect, which means that even if your term of service ends, you can't get out before they decide who all is going overseas.

If I go, of which there is about a 97% chance, I will be cooperating with elements of the 82nd Airborne in training Afghani soldiers and hunting down remaining Taliban elements in the mountain caves etc.

Yeah, you seriously shouldn't be giving out dates and units. The Guard apparently needs some serious work on OPSEC. When I went to Iraq I didn't even give my mom concrete info.

Anyway, remember the ROE, don't do dumb shit, and don't let people get away with dumb shit.

But it's good that you guys clear this up. I would've hoped the actual (you know, well-trained and stuff) military units would be a little more professional than "I'll kick some ass".

As for the OP: Good luck. Don't point your gun at people, especially while cleaning it. And take something to read, I'm no military man, but I suspect you'll get mighty bored mighty quick.

And telling you "Afghanistan" doesn't really make a difference. This is all public knowledge. But feel free to play the badass internet warrior role.

As for the remarks regarding the Guard, they are using videos of my units actions in Iraq, especially running convoy security, to train regular Army right now. We also never lost a man. So, running your mouth about the Guard really doesn't bother me. If your opinion mattered all that much to me, I wouldn't be a very good soldier, now would I?

Enough of the well wishes. I'm starting to feel humiliatingly sentimental, and we can't have those big bad killer soldier guys tearing up and whatnot. Honestly, I'd rather not think about it any more. I'll let you guys know after next months briefing what the final details are. As a fella pointed out, specific locations would be a no-go, but I can tell you if its a go or not.

Hey...when you are over there...you might well run into some rather well trained Khandars...trained by...well I am sure you'll find out. (hint - a Guards Unit!)

My objection was you giving out military info on the innerwebtubesnet...something yer CO and yer buds would not be happy about ....OPSEC?? Ever hear of it?

Believe it or not I am fully supportive of all action against the Tali's...I just have little time for gung ho soldiers who think dick swinging is 'the in thing'....
