Here in the UK, it has been said that the Conservative Party was the natural party of government for the 20th Century. However, with a Labour Government likely to last until 2009, what party do you think will rule for most of the 21st Century?

Labour ruled most of the 20th century in Britain.

As for the 21st century, I have no idea. Maybe the liberal democrats?

Yeah, until Maggie got in and saved the UK from becoming a third rate power like Spain.

Doubtful. Being a fairly new party in an old country is rarely a boon, and with the repositioning of Labour to the center while the Lib Dems are now effectively the most left-wing of the United Kingdom's three main parties.
...put that together with their desire for higher taxes and I don't see them taking over the government anytime soon.

Personally I tend to generally like them, tho.

New Labour is dead. The country hates it, even its own members. Labour must either return to its roots or be supplanted by the Conservatives.

The ALP.

No, that doesn't stand for American Lapdogs Party.

No, I'm sorry, you're incorrect. Labour didn't start to get into government regularly until after WWII, and the Conservatives have had sustained periods in power.

I think labour will own this century because the alternatives are crap IMHO

-I’ve never trusted conservatives
-Lib Dems have always seemed the weak party with no idea what there doing

It's not a new party save in name. The Liberal Democrats are the result of a merger between a small party called the SDP and the Liberal Party; the latter of which has been around since the 1800's. And with Blair's press to the right with Labour, its left-leaning membership has started to desert it in droves towards the Lib Dems while its right wing continues its steady drift to the Tories, who have always demonstrated a better execution of what is essentially exactly the same stance as the current cabinet.

If either Blair or Reid are the Labour leader in the next general election, you can be assured that we will have a Conservative government with a Liberal Democrat opposition. Even Brown will have a tough battle ahead of him to keep his party together in the light of its steady descent into chaos over the last 9 years. This government has succeeded spectacularly in polarising British politics, and that will take a lot of time to undo at the hands of a "centrist" leader like Gordon.

Marketing is life, brand name recognition is key. See Tesco.

Maybe! But remember that Blair is on the way out anyway. Whomever leads the party after his departure can remake/change course. Let's hope he does a better job than the American Democrats' Howard Dean.

Polarization has been happening since there were parties, but IMO has been magnified by the fall of Communism and rise of 24/7 news outlets.
