Either "two dudes stroking it" or "in this wasteland of uptight Mormon prigs, it's impossible to find high-quality hashish, electronica, fisting..."

Actually, that makes newspapers about 2000 times more interesting...they should consider it.

Actually, Le Monde is correct (French for "the world"). It's one of the rare instances where a French noun ending in "e" is in fact masculine.

http://www.french-linguistics.co.uk/dictionary/

1 monde Noun, masculine (a) world; le ~ the world; (referring to people) everybody, everyone; le ~ entier the whole world, the entire world, the world over; au ~, du ~ in the world; le premier au ~ à le faire tthe first person in the world to do it; la meilleure chose du ~ the best thing in the world; dans le ~ world-wide; partout dans le ~ all over the world; tout le ~ everybody, everyone, every bugger (Infml, dialectal); le ~ à moi my world; être de ce ~ to be in the land of the living; ne plus être de ce ~ to be no longer with us; "où va le ~?" That's a horrendously simplistic model that is bound to cause more errors than not. It's not the actual terminal letter one should look at for clues, but the terminal letters and what sort of word it is. Masculine nouns that end in -e:

Months, seasons, days of the weak, trees and metals: "un octobre, un été, le dimanche, un chêne, le cuivre..."

Nouns that end in -age: "le tournage, le village." Exceptions: "la cage, une image, la page, la plage, la rage."

Nouns that end in "-phone, -scope, -isme:" un organisme, le téléphone, un magnétoscope."

Words made up of verb+noun: "un lave-vaisselle, un parapluie, un portefeuille..."

Then there's of course "un problème, un système, un programme, un volume, un modèle, un groupe, un domaine, le silence, un lycée, un musée, un squelette, un murmure, un côté, un comité, un député, le pâté, un livre (feminine if meaning "pound," though), le Cambodge, le Mexique, le Zaïre, le Danube, le Rhône, le Tibre..."

As you can see, "ends in -e -> guess une" is something one should forget after the first week of middle school French as a Foreign Language.

Seems to me that Ephron is, in a geographically misguided way, simply saying that the NY Times isn't what it used to be, namely, the most respected paper in the business, a carcass of what it once was. But I doubt she's saying that the NY Times is the caricature presented on that site.

Considering that the paper itself is a major loss for the corporation it is a part of, I would say that whoever is in charge of it now is running it straight into the ground as fast as they can manage.

Subscriptions have plummeted, as have advertisment in the paper. And as far as its reputation for accurate news goes, they might as well have intentionally printed the crap stories and false news they've done over the past few years.

At this point in time, the New York Post is a far more accurate paper, and that's saying something.

I think you're mistaken, (http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=105317&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=895881&highlight=) but that's well-trod ground for you. NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2006--The New York Times Company announced today that in July 2006 advertising revenues for the Company's business units decreased 3.3% and total Company revenues decreased 1.8% compared with July 2005.

"Our advertising results in July were adversely affected by the challenging print advertising market, especially in categories such as studio entertainment, automotive and corporate," said Janet L. Robinson, president and CEO. "In what is generally a seasonally weak month, we continued to experience healthy growth at our digital properties, particularly NYTimes.com and About.com, which both posted advertising gains of over 30% in July."
Might be down some, but the press release numbers are hardly what anyone would call "plummeting."

Try comparing the performance of the paper over the last ten years.

Subscriptions, etc.

You'll find I'm not mistaken at all.

If I was a shareholder, I would dump my stock, since it's apparent that Pinch isn't doing anything to restore the credibility of the paper. If anything, he's gone out of his way to make it worse by denying it's a problem.

Here's a classic example of Pinch at work:

Sulzberger made the charge against his readers while he was on a panel at the American Society of Newspaper Editors according to Editor and Publisher magazine, which reported the story this way:

“Sulzberger [said] the worst thing to come out of the Blair scandal was … readers who knew about the incorrect reporting did not complain…”

Apparently, New Yorkers don't think much of the Times, either

The Times has seen its comparable core metropolitan circulation decline by 27% since 1993 (the first year that such figures were available online), when it had a circulation of 758,000. Its current 556,000 circulation places it a dismal number three in its home market behind the New York Daily News (689,000) and the New York Post (663,000).
