HALO - Video games as media

I was reading old issues of Time magazine when I came across an editorial piece on video games as a form of media (like paintings or motion-pictures).
The article was written by a elderly Vietnam veteran. He borrowed his grandson's XBox and a copy of HALO 2 to do his 'research' for the article.
He admitted in the article he has become a full-fledged junkie for HALO ever since. He said playing the game was like the last scene from Platoon where Charlee Sheen on the Evac chopper.
I've never played HALO or read the books. Can someone tell me whats so good about it that converted an elderly man into a XBox advocate?

Naw. He think Eut would enjoy HALO if he could see the Convent as Democrats and Sentinels as ATF agents coming for his guns.

Not to sound TOO fanboyish, but...
Why exactly do you think Microsoft went to the bother of buying Rare and producing the travesty that was Perfect Dark: Zero?
'Cause Perfect Dark PWNED Halo :P

Yea but when it comes down to it Halo isn't about the story. It's about the gameplay. It takes 5 seconds of fun and extends it to however long you feel like playing. Most people play Halo for the multiplayer though.

So you're saying the aliens were shot by his guns eh? How refreshingly different.

Once you snipe somebody and watch them spend the next ten minutes trying to hunt down your ass while you get longest life, you'll understand the addiction. Oh yea, and then theres "omg that was my face!" as you get stuck and BOOMKERSPLAT!

Halo is the greatest online game for Xbox live. Thats why its so popular.
Plus the alternative games you can make up with your friends are awesome. Flying around in a Banshee dodging a crapload of Scorpion tanks and Gauss warthogs is a challenge.

Now that, that sounds like a huge amount of fun. gonna have to suggest it to smy gamer buddies next time we play.
Halo? Hah, no. Halo is just a generic FPS that got a huge amount more hype than it ever deserved.
If you want true gaming art, think the Metal Gear Solid series, or Ico and Shadows of the Colossus. Those are probably the closest we've got to actual gaming art.

Most of the appeal comes from how easy it is to pick up and play. The mechanics are simple but require a bit of strategy and the weapons and vehicles are balanced well. It isn't especially beautiful or stylish, it's just very solid and playable.

Tis the greatest thing ever! (well it's tied with Oblvion but that's not the point) Halo 2 was only good for the multiplayer, on live and halo 3 is gonna kick ass.

It's not about owning Rare, it's about everyone else NOT owning Rare.

I've played many FPS-games, but Halo has been the only after Doom that I've wanted to play through more than once. Currently I'm on my fourth run.
The gameplay is simple, but it's solid and fun. No other game has the same flow.
As a bonus the two Halo books which told stories before and after Halo The Game rocked (the book about the game wasn't really that interesting).
