I need to expand my musical horizons

I'm bored with the music I currently own, and I was wondering if anyone could suggest any bands I might like? Pretty much any genre goes. My music collection is biased ever so slightly towards metal (power metal mainly), so any obscure metal bands would be cool, or anything thats a bit different to add some diversity :p

heathen
testament (woo!)
bolt thrower
machine head (not obscure but it still rocks ass)
metallium (german power metal... very awesome :D)

non-metal:
alex skolnick (jazz covers of metal songs; taught by satriani; ex-guitarist of testament)
cream (just cos they rock)
pitchshifter (blend of punk, metal and drum & bass with political and clever lyrics... my personal favourite band)
steppenwolf (cos they rock too)
Yngwie Malmsteen :D

They are truly brilliant (was it you I introduced them to?), but not as good as the two bands I'm about to recommend...

I'm going to recommend Biffy Clyro and Oceansize (particularly Everyone Into Position)

And you might like Sucioperro.

Interesting, I heard a story on (US) National Public Radio yesterday about ... well, here's a synopsis:

Robert Sapolsky, a distinguished neuroscientist in his 40s, had a young assistant who played different music every day, from Sonic Youth to Minnie Pearl. That made Sapolsky crazy -- and curious about why his aging ears still crave the music he loved in college. Is there a certain age when the typical American passes from the novelty stage to utter predictability?

And a link (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5652676). The crux of the story was that your musical tastes are pretty much locked in by your early 20s. And your taste for adventure in many things, too. Some really interesting points were made. :p

*is trying to keep up* There's lots of bands mentioned that I've never heard of, thats more than I expected :D

www.purevolume.com/refused - Didn't like, they're a bit....screechy :s
www.purevolume.com/deathfromabove1979 - I quite liked them, but not as much as I liked the guys piano scarf in the pic (gotta get one of those)

Broken social scene - I was impressed
65 DOS - *buys all their albums*
Sigur Ros - Pretty sure I've heard these guys before. I like. Lots.
The Fratellis (maybe not your thing) - I liked it til he started singing...
The Young Knives (maybe not your thing) - ^^

All Time Low - sounds like the sorta think I'd dance to when drunk :p bit cheesy, but not bad
The Sophomore Attempt - Hmmm...I liked "Elisabeth", but the guys voice gets annoying quickly ;)
It Dies Tonight - couldn't find, I'll have a proper look in a bit though
From Grace - same ^^
Azriel - had no songs up on purevolume, so I'll look elsewhere

And as for PMs list, judging by the names I recognise, I'm gonna like them all :p

Hmm...

In terms of metal...

Machinae Supremacy - A power metal/industrial(ish) group who mix the sounds of an old Commodore 64 with a dark-ish sound and traditional power metal drumming. Lyrics vary from political to moderately gothic.

Avantasia - Metal opera! 'Nuff said.

Otherwise...

Fugazi - Progressive/Hardcore Punk group. The only band I've ever heard who knew what the fuck dynamics were.

Phil Ochs - A witty folk-singer with highly political songs and a wonderful sense of melody.

And I was just going by the most commonly used definition nowadays (i.e., indie is a genre that encompasses Panic! At The Disco and Deathcab For Cutie), rather than the original definitions (i.e. bands that are on small labels or aren't signed).

Wait. You've never heard any Rush, Yes, or Queen?

They did dynamics, but the dynamics they did were dynamics of tone; which is to say, when they wanted a "quiet" sound they'd use instruments that fit with the "quiet" steriotype, and when they wanted a loud sound they'd use "loud" instruments.

Fugazi, on the other hand, never used accoustic instruments to attain dynamic difference. They used electric instruments, didn't change settings, and depended on skills alone to build the huge crescendos and decrescendos that their music sports. I've never heard a Piano so soft in rock and roll, nor a Fortissimo so loud. They used dynamic contrast in a way that other rock groups hadn't done before them.

1: Take a listen to "2112", "Hemispheres", and "Moving Pictures", and tell me Alex, Geddy, and Neil only did tonal dynamics. I'll laugh my ass off if you honestly think they did.

2: Sorry, but no. "2112", "Cygnus X-1", and "Hemispheres" have so much dynamic range that I can't even allow this bullshit to pass. And don't get me started on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"...

I'd also like to mention Rush's excellent "Red Barchetta". It opens with quiet harmonics that are played with more intensity as the song fades in, and then an arpeggio that's played moderately loud, so the bass guitar takes the lead.

After the opening comes the main riff, which is played with Grunge Rock intensity. The settings on Alex's guitar are changed, sure (more distortion), but he plays it with brutal intensity.

And then, there's "The Trees". Shall I mention that beautiful work of art that is a song?

Well, since you(the OP)mentioned liking metal and classical, ever listen to Apocalyptica(http://www.apocalyptica.com/home/index.php) or perhaps Nightwish(http://nightwish.com/)? You probably have(along with lots of others here), but you did ask for suggestions. Of course, if you'd like something of a slightly different nature, I'd also like to suggest a female artist named Emiliana Torrini. She has a good voice, but some of her songs(or, at least, the ones I've heard)can a bit.... odd. A quick tidbit about her: She's the chic who sang during the ending credits(or in the music video, if you have the DVD)of LOTR:The Two Towers. The movie is the only reason I know she exists.

I don't give a shit if it opens with an acoustic. It's still played softly, in stark contrast to the electric guitar that comes in after.

And then there's the interlude groove/solo. And then the pre-verse (the part where Alex's guitar sounds like a xylophone). And then the end of the song with building intensity that leads to the climax.

I honestly don't know what you're trying to prove here, but I'm not buying it. :p

The HHH would definitely be at the bottom of that list if it was ordered by quality. The Pixies, the Shins, Autopassion, and the Shout Out Louds are probably the best of the group. I was mainly just naming bands.

I'll have to check a tab, but I think he's playing on the fret dividers to make that sound. I know what harmonics are, man. :p

Edit: He's not playing harmonics. He's fretting on the dividers to give it a "woody" sound, which is really quite appropriate. It gains intensity with each successive "knock on wood", so to speak.

I've never heard any band use such a diverse range of dynamics so cleverly, hence giving the band a unique quality making it pleasant to listen to. :p

Simple enough.

Okie-dokie. I've never actually heard the song, so.... well, you can understand why I was wrong.

EDIT: What the hell is a divider?

I don't know what they're called (I honestly don't know *that* much about guitars... yet), but they're the metal pieces that make the frets.

You should listen to the song, though. The sound it makes is interesting.

Lol, that's what the frets ARE, dude. The area of neck behind it is just the semitone. When you fret (i.e., put your finger down), you're supposed to put your finger down right behind the fret.

We were still talking about the Fugazi song, right?

Okay, so we both know what we're talking about now. Good. :D

But it's hard to tell if he's playing on the semitones, or if he's palm muting... It really could be either, though it does sound more like semitone fretting.

Alright let me lay it out...

Power Metal - don't touch this stuff ... it's all the same and I find nearly all of it to be boring, once you've heard one album, you've heard 99% of the others.

Bands I recommend:
Children of Bodom (one of the exceptions to the powermetal rule above, the guitar work by these guys is amazing)
Trivium (Up and coming Death/Progressive Death)
Opeth (Kings of Metal and one of the most technically tallented bands in the world)
Devin Townsend (Progressive Metal, he's awsome I've seen him live in concert.)
Mastodon (These guys are fairly new and play what is called Sludge Metal, and it's fucking awsome.)
Dark Lunacy (Death/Metalcore, Get the album The Diarist)
Single Bullet Theory Obscure ... but awsome
Vader

That's the Metal, There are other non-metal groups I would reccomend like Snow Patrol, Vivaldi, The Weakerthans, Keane, etc.

Heard a few of those (CoB-I bought a ticket to the Unholy Alliance tour just cos they were playing, Trivium, Opeth, Mastodon), the rest I'll check out. Except Snow Patrol and Keane. Don't like them.

*Edit: What's Dream Theatre?

Yeah I like Apocalyptica, and I'm pretty sure I have a Nightwish cd around somewhere. Never heard of Emiliana Torrini, but I do like the LOTR soundtrack. I'll give her a listen to.

Also: Dream Theater (http://www.purevolume.com/dreamtheater).

Try Candlemass....doom metal with operatic vocals. Trouble and St. Vitus are also worth checking out, but if you like power metal, you'll probably find Candlemass more instantly accessible because of the vocal style.

(You are the person that said you hated Cathedral and Electric Wizard, though, right?)

Stoner metal like Kyuss or Sleep is also worth checking out...

And for something a little different still, I have a soft spot for drone metal like Earth, Boris, or Sunn O)))....so give them a try if you're open minded. :)

Oh, and the Melvins.

Oh, awesome. :) My personal favourite album of theirs is "Welcome to Sky Valley", but every Kyuss fan I meet seems to have a different opinion on what their best work is, so it's trial and error, really. :p

As for similar bands, Sleep (whom I mentioned before) are pretty close, as is the earlier work of Fu Manchu. You might like some Monster Magnet too (not so much the recent stuff, but earlier on they're great IMO) and also Queens of the Stone Age, if you're not familiar with them already - QOTSA basically evolved from Kyuss.

Down, Phil Anselmo from Pantera's side project (except better than Pantera, in my opinion), and the album "Deliverance" by Corrosion of Conformity are also worth taking a look at.

And if you don't know much Black Sabbath yet (you probably do, but eh, it needs to be said), go for their first four albums.

The link in my sig is dedicated to the stoner rock/metal scene, so you might want to check out some bands in the jukebox there too. :)

Power Metal - don't touch this stuff ... it's all the same and I find nearly all of it to be boring, once you've heard one album, you've heard 99% of the others.I dunno about that, I don't find power metal to be any more repetative than death metal. I enjoy both genres.
