A little help from ladies...

The Sinai Peninsula

I could use a little help here. Do the ladies prefer facial hair or don't they? Any pointers on what type of facial hair (if any) is "in" would be helpful and much appreciated.

I think a little scruff is super hot. I dont really like full beards, although CTOAN wears it well.

Depends on the person I think. Scruffy/ rugged look can be as hot as clean cut/clean shaven.

"Depends entirely on the woman" is the correct answer for everything in your post.

Aw, sorry, better prepare to be disappointed (or not, as may be the case).

There's no such thing as "all women prefer...". It completely and solely depends on the woman in question.
Same as for long or short hair, btw.

As long as you go with something that goes well with you, you're on as safe a side as you can be on. The rest will be out of your hands.

it depends on the lady. I haven't ever met a lady who likes a mustache, although once I post this they will come out of the woodwork.

Whatever you decide try to keep it well groomed, trimmed, combed, whatever. I don't like it when it's all scraggly or has food in it or whatever, it's just creepy and gross.

A goatee is nice and if you keep the edges straight you come off as well groomed and women like that, the alternative is to just be a little scruffy but be careful because as good as stuble looks it's quite painful for the lady.

In my experience, women most prefer to be clubbed on the head and dragged unconscious back to your cave. And when I'm out clubbing, I don't care about my facial hair, so you shouldn't either.

yeah, and the "mountain man" beard? not working for 90% of guys..keep that in mind.

My husband grew his out for a while after I had the first kid, and we called him Grizzly Adams, after about 3 months I made him shave it.........gross. http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:LaPJ00xdtjsdFM:http://www.dm-productions.com/bonanzafilm/a.danhaggerty_3.jpg

Dammit, I can't even vote in the poll. And I love polls, so that's not nice of you at all.

I guess another important thing that should be said: it doesn't only depend on the woman, but also on the guy wearing the beard. If it looks good, it looks good. If not, not. *shrug*

I don't really have any general preference, it depends on the guy, I guess.

The only thing that's definitely out is a mustache without a beard to go with it.

I'm pretty sure if there was a topic started by a gay man asking for men's opinions on facial hair, women wouldn't barge in and say "gosh, I'm so discriminated against!!! Why can't I give my opinion?!?!" A few might offer their opinion saying something like "well, I'm a woman, but this is what I think..." but they wouldn't be whiney and hijack the thread.

If you want to give your opinion on facial hair, just give it. But don't look in every corner of the internet for some reason to feel discriminated against (and then announce it to everybody). It wears thin.

Actually I'm a woman and I make a point of hijacking gender segregated threads. Whenever I see a 'hottest chick' thread, and there are a few, I always post pictures of men and have a little rant. It would be nice if people were allowed to discuss what they think with everyone, no matter what gender or sexual preference they are. Now stop bitching just because some guys have a complaint, they have a good point even if you don't see it.

Full beards destroy any signs of facial structure, and since I like being able to perv on jawlines and stuff, I don't like beards.

Mustaches on their own are a) second-hand car salesman-y and b) tricky to spell

Goatees look good on thin faces but shit on wider ones.

Since that's actually (gasp) what the thread is about. Not you supporting someone complaining that they aren't skewing the results because... hey, they wanted to post. Even though, guess what, they ARE skewing the results, and being pouty and petulant about it to boot.

I know it's been said a million times before, but it appears that we could always use a bit more repetition:

"Women" are not a hive mind. Women are individual people who have different likes and dislikes. Some women find facial hair very attractive, while others find it unattractive. Some women don't care either way. If you are still at a stage where you think "ladies" can be lumped into one general category on topics such as this, yet you are old enough to be pondering your facial hair, then you have much bigger problems than shaving can fix for you.

It stupid of people to pretend like it's a compliment to say "women are better behaved than men." The only people who benefit from such statements are lazy, selfish men.

The myth of inherent male wickedness has always been used as a justification for abuse. Boys will be boys. Men are just horny beasts who can't be expected to control themselves. Women are so much better behaved, so it becomes womens' responsibility to civilize the menfolk.

Women are held to a much higher standard of behavior and civility because of the self-fulfilling prophesy that "women are better behaved than men."

Women aren't any better behaved than men, it's just that women are PUNISHED for bad behavior more than men are. Women aren't angels any more than men are demons. Women are PEOPLE, and people are generally good but sometimes wicked.

Putting women on a pedestal is still objectifying them, so don't pretend like you're paying a compliment when you do it.

And yes, I intend to help hijack the hell out of threads like this one. This gendered bullshit is so Junior High that it makes me giggle.

I don't know, I don't see no immediate need to vote in the poll. If it mentioned stubble or had an 'other' option I'd vote that.

Actually, that's what's so annoying about you and Mr Oh No I'm Not Being Counted - you don't NEED to vote on the poll. Just say it. That would be on topic discussion and not off topic spam. That's what people do when there's no poll option - they say "Hey, what about x topic? That's what I'd pick".

And coming into a poll thread and seeing 'no immediate need' to take the poll, or even comment ON the poll? Seems a tad wasteful. But then, I am apparently the Overly Sensitive Anti-Spammer, so nevermind.

No he's not skewing the results, Baguetten has an excellent taste in men. I don't see how his opinion should be treated as different from mine (it's probably very similar seeing as I drool over all the pictures I've seen him post). I don't understand why you say he's skewing the results, sure the OP asked for women but it's not as if all women think alike anyway. I don't see it making any difference having gay men vote in the poll.

If I was trying to find out what the English think of England, because I was considering moving there, you can bet I'd be pissed if someone came in all "Well, I live in the US, and haven't been to England, but it seems cool, and I wanted to vote too!".

The OP asked for women's opinions KNOWING that all women have different opinions. He wants to appeal to the majority. The majority of WOMEN.

What you are ignoring is the second part of the OP's clause. It wasn't "Hey guys, I'm curious what women think of facial hair". It was "Hey guys, I want to attract WOMEN - what facial hair should I adopt to avoid making them think I have an axe hidden in my trunk.

I'm sure Baguetten DOES have wonderful taste, and I don't think he shouldn't be able to GIVE his opinion (in post form, similar to what I suggested for you above - "Hey guys, I'm a guy, but I like x"). But, since this isn't a public poll, he HAS skewed the results. The polls no longer purely reflect the OP's best chances of not-scaring-off-chicks.

But... you do have a point in that if you and he share similar taste, what attracts him would attract you. I'll certainly conceed that. And it's also worth pointing out that I'm being pointlessly nitpicky because I've been off forums for so long, I'd forgotten how fun it can be. So take me with a pinch of salt (or a palmful... I am half Italian, after all)

I contradicted the post because I disagreed with what the poster said. Have you never seen that done before?

Considering my whole place in this 'debate' consists of me being contrary (not for no reason, just... to see what happens), I think it's safe to say I've seen contradictions happen before:p

I'm sorry for not behaving like a good little girl and keeping what I thought quiet. I don't see how my 'bad behaviour' makes people think less of woman-kind. I don't care in the slightest what you think of me, I'm not going to start acting nice and agreeing with people just to prove that women are 'better behaved' than men.

Anyone who thinks of 'women kind' as an actual thing is a twit anyway (unless they're being horrendously tongue in cheek >.>), so don't worry about that. And of all the people to complain about ANYONE not being a good little girl... well. Won't be me, is all.

And actually, you don't need to care what I think, because I certainly approve in general. I just don't think you needed to be nearly so defensive about it. No one was trying to silence guys on this thread - it'd just help if they didn't vote in the (non-public) poll.

And to head back towards on topic, I support the stubble movement. My boyfriend also approves, because it means he gets to be even more of a slob than he is already :D

In case it wasn't clear, this is my consilatory "Oh hey, other people are probably taking this more seriously than me... oh shit, I better make sure they know I'm not sitting here behind my screen cursing them out or anything" post. Please accept it also as an apology if my contraranist nature annoyed you - and I hope Baguetten recognises the point I made here - it's more a matter of courtesy, considering the non-public poll.

See, here's the thing:

If you want to know what a particular woman is going to find attractive, it's not going to help you to ask a million other people what "women" like. This is because the quality of being a woman does not determine an individual's preference in facial hair.

Sorry, lads, but you can't get piles of naked ladies simply by shaving your facial hair a certain way. It just doesn't work that way.

If the thread founder wants to know how to make himself more attractive to women in general, then the best advice anybody can give him is very simple:

He can't.

What makes you more attractive to one woman will make you less attractive to another. What turns one woman on will turn the next woman off. Don't waste your time trying to be attractive to All Of Womankind, because it can't be done. (Unless you're Johnny Depp, but that doesn't count because Johnny Depp has superpowers and is a pirate.)

Honestly, the best thing a guy can do is figure out what sort of beard (or lack of beard) makes him feel the most attractive. His confidence is going to do more for him than the facial hair ever could.

See, here's the thing:

MWAHAHA! You missed my cleverly disguised loophole!

"what facial hair should I adopt to avoid making them think I have an axe hidden in my trunk."

He's not (or shouldn't be) looking for what *attracts* women - just what to avoid in order to scare of the smallest number of them.

But yes, I still have your "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WOMEN BECAUSE WOMEN ARE ALL DIFFERENT PEOPLE! *explodes into thousands of indignant giblets*" post bookmarked somewhere, so. Preaching, choirs. You know, all the good stuff

In other news - I have a job now! Hurrah (it is bookstore-er-ry)

Hehehe, okay, I can't argue with that.

There's the wisdom for the day, lads! Shave in such a way that you scare off the smallest possible number of women.

Firstly, I think I mentioned in my first post on this thread that I usually hijack threads like this. I have my reasons for this which I've already stated, so I hope you understand why I didn't bother to make on-topic posts (until you directly asked me what I thought). Also I am aware that I don't need to vote in every poll, quite often I don't if there is no option I agree with or care about. I'd hardly call this spam though, we're having a debate which is straying a little from the topic but is still kind of relevent.

If I was trying to find out what the English think of England, because I was considering moving there, you can bet I'd be pissed if someone came in all "Well, I live in the US, and haven't been to England, but it seems cool, and I wanted to vote too!".
Using your example I'd say most gay men would count as americans who moved to England at a young age and have lived there ever since. They still know as much about England as any english person would. I hate analogys.

I am half Italian, after all)
Why can't anyone who finds men attractive vote in the poll? The few men who voted in it won't skew the results, I believe their opinions matter as much as a womans. Sure I don't think the OP will want to be picking up gay men, I also doubt he'd want anything to do with me after getting to know me. So why should what I think be more important than what Baguetten thinks? I really don't see the difference at all.

Considering my whole place in this 'debate' consists of me being contrary (not for no reason, just... to see what happens), I think it's safe to say I've seen contradictions happen before:p

I probably seem like an ardent feminist now. I'm not offended at all, I may seem a little defensive but all I'm doing really is arguing. For the same reason as you are, it's fun.

You had to ruin the debate by acting nice and posting lots of happy smilies. :(
Anyway, I don't agree with what you say. That might have something to do with me not caring whatsoever about courtesy to someone who doesn't respect the views of all people.

I would have point-by-point addressed your other points (mainly just agreeing with them, alas, so I'll spare you the boredom).

But you certainly don't seem like an ardent feminist any more than I (hope) I don't seem like a homophobic twat.

You just happen to pick the extreme of the side of the debate you *agree* with. I've done that in far, far too many NS debates. Now I take the far extreme of the pointless side of the debate that no one cares about. And yes, I do use smileys to disarm people :p

Anyway, I don't agree with what you say. That might have something to do with me not caring whatsoever about courtesy to someone who doesn't respect the views of all people.
That's ok, I don't agree with me either - debates are much less frustrating when you can pick the point they stop being fun and just go "well, actually, you're pretty much right on all counts. I just like picking at things". Hence the apology, actually (some people consider it 'time wasting' for some reason... I can't imagine why. They get to win, I get to argue without losing. Happiness all 'round)

I wasn't avoiding YOU per se... I just had a sudden shift in groups and time (maths nerds = fun!) and MSN was being arsey and... well, now I'm at Daniel's place all the time, so I'm never on MSN or the internet in general :p

Plus I was rather pouty after the whole What-The-Hell-Shared-A-Bed-With-Guy-I-Liked-And-Nothing-Happened-GRAH! thing.

I still have your Gameboy you silly! Andandand what ever happened to One Known As V(NotForVendetta)? I invited her to a thing ages ago and haven't heard from her since.

In an attempt to bring this thread back on topic (sorry, Bottle):

For the most part I prefer clean-shaven, although some people pull off the stubble look very well - although if your whiskers are very wiry, keep in mind they hurt a lot when you scrape your face against the woman's when you kiss. If you have soft whiskers, then it's fine.

I have met a few men that look good in beards or goatees, but not very many.

But it's your face, decorate it as you wish. If a woman is rejecting you based on your facial hair alone, she's pretty damn shallow, and you probably don't want to be with her anyway.

Good advice. I've heard girls worrying about whether or not their hair styles will chase men away, and I think to myself, "I wish I had a hair style that would chase away the kind of man who can be chased away by hair styles!"

Of course, I must admit that there are probably some limits to this. For instance, if you carefully cultivate a Hitler mustache, then I really can't blame any woman (or man) who decides to pass on dating you.

Don't fall for it! Once you start making life choices based on appeal to your potential partners-of-choice, you're sunk! Do what you like best. And where's the "Myrth" option on the poll? ;)
YES!

most men want to attract the kind of woman who admires men who have their own mind and make their own choices.

if you want a woman who is overly influenced by the opinions of other and the trends of current fashion, take a poll.

you can attract either type. which would you prefer?
