I must strongly object to Kramer vs. Kramer! Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar for his forgetable performance, while up against Peter Sellers for Being There, far and away the superior film! To this day, I shun the Academy for this injustice!

No not really, I do enjoy many foreign films, and directors. Most notably Gilliam, Argento, Bava, Fulci, among others.

I also really enjoyed Ong Bak, although i do not know who made that film.

When I was very young, I watched a few European films (some of Truffaut's work, and classics by Bergman). Bergman was nice, if you could stay awake.

Also, Le Weekend, by Godard. Which was extremely bad.

After that, I never watched much European film. Not that Hollywood is much better, but it is somewhat better.

Interesting you would choose one of the prequels rather than one of the originals....at least you picked the best prequel. III was definitely the best star wars since Empire.....(i was not a fan of ROTJ)

Cabra...why so touchy about USians liking US movies, seeing as thats what we predominantly watch? I did, you note, include Kurosawa in my top 5, for example, and Rashomon and Dreams are also probably in my top 20 (so much for limiting it to 5). I dont necessarily think of Truffault or Eisenstein, though Ive seen the 400 Blows and Potemkin, merely because its been a long time since Ive seen them. My newest purchases, Tsotsi (South African) and Zhou Yus Train (Chinese) also escape the vacuum that is Hollywood. Looking at the choices on this thread, I think most of the USians who bothered to post are particularly fond of horror (Oh yes, I forgot Suspiria by Argento) or Science Fiction. But accepting all criticism as constructive...have any suggestions? :)

The main reason Episode III made my list was because ever since I was a kid and saw The original Star Wars, there has been stories and rumors about exactly how Vader got to be the half man/half machine form he is, and what, exactly was up with the dialogue between him and Obi Wan on the Death Star. Of course, the backstory was somewhat developed... we knew that Obi Wan and Vader had some kind of duel that resulted in his falling inot a pit of acid or lava or something, but nobody knew exact details and it was the lightsaber duel we all craved to see...

And While I wasn't terribly impressed with the prequels overall, the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan lived up to my hopes. I had been anticipating that lightsaber duel almost my whole life and it did not disappoint!

I will admit, the finale of the 3rd episode sans vaders demasculating "NOOOOOOOO" was delightful and worth the money.

Cabra... I hate to admit this, but it's true that most Americans don't get a lot of mainstream exposure to International movies. Until recently most stuff from overseas was relegated to Independent film channels and rarely made it into the more mainstream theaters. Smaller theaters sometimes can be found that cater more to those who want specific sultural films, like one that specialized in Indian releases not far from here.

Advertising... not so much.

That has been turning around a bit recently, with more Chinese work and Eurpoean movies making the mainstream here, but it's been a slow process. Most of our media fare from overseas has been in the form of Anime...

Agreed... and I think it's partly because American audiences don't "get" foreign films. The cultural differences and references are too subtle or unfamiliar and the movie wouldn't doo well. I liked the Ring, and would be interested in seeing the original Japanese Ringu. By contrast, I though the Grudge started out strong and faltered, and I suspect the Japanese original is a much better movie.

We Americans are an egocentric lot, and would do well to familiarize ourselves more with the world out there.

I just love that in Conan, Arnold was taught his lines as they went along, and didn't even know what he was saying some of the time LOL

Having said that, the symbolism in Conan was surprisingly deep for an adventure movie, and well worth the time to listen to the Director's Commentary

I cannot stress this enough...if you enjoyed the theatrical release, see the Directors Cut.

It fills in a LOT of story and character development that was quite obviously missing from the theatrical release (some bad editing to cut out various sequences)

It makes an already good movie ten times better.
