Halo. Nothing original about it.
Lol... originality determines how good a game is? Guess there's nothing good about perfecting game mechanics then(whether you agree with that in relation to halo isnt my point).

Yawn.
Civ 3 stole my soul this weekend for 13 hours straight without bathroom or food breaks.i hated it at first but once i figured out the small details it grew on me big time.
My opinion on the most overhyped games goes to
Halo 2
GTA San Andreas
Halo 3 (trust me,if the trailers are relevant to the actual game as much as the trailers were for the second game, then this will be just as shitty with just as many new unbalanced gimmicks and an even more half assed single player mode)
anything by nintendo.
anything from sony online entertainment
world of warcraft (yawn,oh look,ANOTHER everquest.id rather play the free everquest called guild wars.oh wait, thats just as lame as the millions of everquest clones out there that you have to pay for.pass.)
Counter strike
and last but not least, the ps3 if we were to count systems.

Final Freakin' Fantasy. *bleah*
oh yeah,i forgot that one, final fantasy sucks.it takes a special kind of stupid for someone to buy the same game 12 times just becuase the developers reworded the same plot and changed around the characters names and appearances while making them similair in both abilities and personalities to their former selves.

So what's wrong with the individual games? A rose by any other name, including Sunflower 5, would be just as sweet.
Oh, and I agree with whoever said Halo.

Halo is so ridiculously overhyped it's funny. Fanboys. Morons. That, and Spore. A game of intelligent design doesn't really interest me. Give me a game that accurately simulates evolution, where you can only indirectly influence the development of creatures by altering their environments, and I'll pay for it.

Halo 2 for sure. I enjoyed Halo 1, even if it was just a very well-made shooter. The plot was nothing special, but the action was quite good.
Halo 2, on the other hand, had none of the charm of the first game, the action was very poor indeed, the plot was unfinished, and the last missions were really, really god-awful.
Playing as the alien was no different at all from playing Master Chief, so that opportunity was rather wasted.
I'd have to say pretty much everything Peter Meyonleux (or whatever his name is, couldn't he have just changed his last name to "smith" or something?) has ever made goes in here as well, with a focus on Dungeon Keeper and Black & White.
Dungeon Keeper (1 & 2) : Despite playing as the baddies, this game was dull. The combat was basically "how many monsters can you get into this one area" and the building work wasn't particularly interesting.
The levels were also all basically the same, which made me quit the damn things after the first 7 or 8 missions of each, from sheer tedium.
Black and White series (1 & 2) : Where to bloody begin...
It's near-impossible to work out what you're punishing or rewarding in the first one, because your monster's likely done a load of things just after you saw him shit on your fields. When it then says "you've rewarded your chimp's baby-eating nature" the only thing that comes to mind is "ah, bugger".
Training your chosen animal is pretty uninteresting also. Very uninteresting, actually. "Yes, you've seen me cast this spell to make storms eighty-hundred times... now you know how to do it, just about..."
Town building - not interesting enough in the first game, in the second game it's horribly laboured... "you have built some walls" "GRRR WE SHALL ATTACK NOW" "Oh look, the silly buggers lost..."
Plot and setting - Cliché after cliché, it would have been better to have set it in the modern day, with your influence waning, and, you know, saving babies from burning buildings or whatever to gain some favour, and trying to get enough favour to get a cathedral in your honour in every level or something.
And having your monster doing a bit of Rampage-style actions on, say, invaders from overseas / helping in some form of civil war, and going around and smashing up their bases and stamping on tanks etc.
That would quite possibly be a better game.

Absolutely correct.
Also, I'll nominate Republic the Revolution as a runner up. It was supposed to be kinda cool, but was just utterly dire crap.

Good point. Republic was not that good, all things considered...

Halo was good in its day, except for the boring indoor bits.
Spore looks awesome but will probably disappoint. But youd honestly rather indirectly influence evolution than design your own creatures? even if they can have mouths that look like asses and asses that look like chickens?
Indirectly influencing evolution would be interesting but maybe not as fun.
For me the most overhyped is Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Its not that its bad, but that stupid levelling system where everything is the same level as you just ruins it. And they said it was going to have the most realistic AI ever, and then decided that they would put in no AI, and rather dodgy scripting that gets broken too easily.
After about 40 hours I gave up. A game where your character gradually gets weaker as you level up, and the missions get more broken until you just cant do them. god it pisses me off.

If you have the PC version, there are plenty of mods that rectify that. Modded up, Oblivion is awesome, even if the vanilla (original) version is flawed.

John Madden Football has been all hype for years.

**Mortal Kombat for Nintendo or Sega, both games sucked

Ah, yes. In the old days when the presence of blood in console games was actually controversial. The SNES version actually had decent graphics (very close to the arcade version, which I loved) but the fact that they had removed all the bloody effects ruined it. The Sega version had the bloody fatalities (unlockable by a code that naturally everybody knew - why they even bothered is beyond me) but the graphics were horrible. *Sigh* At least the SNES version of MK2 was true to the original.
To answer the OP's question, though, I'm gonna say God of War. Yes, it was an alright game, but really didn't give me much play time for my money.

I know about Republic. I was thinking "What a great idea!" but then they started delaying the release. that was a bad sign, i realized later.
the movies. eh, its good, but not what was advertised. that and the 'expansion pack', which should have been free downloads.
Oblivion is nothing compared to Morrowind. they simplified the gameplay, and i hated oblivion. i played morrowind through so many times. think about 3 vs 4. 3 had so many factions it was unbelievable. 4? nothin.
Any sports on the 360. Christ, everyone thought they would catch up to current gen in the dynasty/owner mode stuff in NCAA and Madden. or not. NCAA 07 on 360 is like Madden 06: the franchise/dynasty mode was spanking new in '98.
Daikatana. I am still not John Romero's bitch.
Halo 3. It doesnt come out for more than a year and you can preorder it.
I really want spore, but if they start showing signs of Republic Syndrome (tm), I might cry. two great ideas ruined, IMO.

The simplification was great! It was stupid how attacks in Morrowind were DnD based. And everything was static in Morrowind.
