I've been using the single bladed cheapies FOREVER. Now that I'm going back to college, I am going to spend some cash and get something that works a ton better.

Here's some off-the-top-of-my-head choices

Gillete Fusion
Mach 3

I use the Fusion one, then again it's one of the few I've been using that I've actually liked. I think it does alright as opposed to a 3-blade.

Don't use soap or shaving foam. Razors get shitter with the soap. Just soften the 'whiskas' with hot water and shave with a cheapie. Once you get the hang smoothest shave evar.

I like the "old-fashioned" ones that open up so you can put an actual razor blade in them. This is a more pricey model (http://www.gents.se/products/288) that allows you to select different steps of "closeness" depending on how good you are at shaving and what result you want.

One of these + a shaving brush + a good shaving soap and things couldn't be easier or better, I find. The initial cost of the razor is overcome by the fact that the blades are quite cheap and last a lot longer than disposable razors. Beware, though, that these kinds of razors require more skill (that comes with practice) if you've only used the disposable ones before. So if you're a newbie, you need to take it slow in the beginning.

There are a variety of shaving powders that address this very issue. I suggest you ask some of your african-american friends for advice.

Spend one month shaving with a non-electric razor, and come back to us.

I recommend Mach 3. I'm sure the others are good, but it's what I've been using after trying several brands after I gave up on electric razors.

Get an electric razor, just wash it every day and recharge it when it gets low - you'll save a fair bit of cash and won't risk cutting yourself.

That, or because you're hardcore - get a machete and swing at your own face, gracefully cutting off the hairs.

lol i hear that... got conned into buying one of those myself and it was utter shit :P

my advise is to go for a decent disposable type - you can get 3 bladed disposable cheapy ones, which work pretty much as well as mach 3 or whatever but you don't have to spend a fortune on replacing blunt blades

During the semester break (which is right now) I always grow a beard and then turn it into something different at the beginning of the next semester.

I usually simply use one of those electric haircutters minus the top, length-adjusting piece, et voilà, cropped facial hair.

If and with what a man shaves is one is his last little freedoms of choice :D

Ok, I know you asked for advice from men, but I've been getting good results from the Fusion when it comes to shaving various parts of my body. I've got nothing to shave on my face, but if you reckon you'll be shaving your pits or your pubes then I think the Fusion will be okay for you.

Besides, it always makes me smile to see my 5-bladed razor with two moisturizing strips, because of an Onion article from BEFORE this razor was designed:

I buy my husband Schick Quattro and for myself the ladies version, the only diffference is mine is pink and his is silver.

I think you can go to the website and get a free sample mailed to you, then if you like it you just have to buy refills (which are pretty cheap at Sams) that's how we got ours.

aren't they like a fiver for the stick and a couple of replacement blade sets? depending on how often you shave it's cheaper to get a decent razor than keep buying ones that you have to chuck out after each use. i've got a wilkinson sword one that works pretty well although i've cut myself every time i've shaved with any manual razor (which is about 4 times).

i don't use disposable razors. i don't shave very often because i don't like the feeling of being clean shaven, i only bother if i perceive a need to appear clean cut. i prefer to have a decent shave when i do tho. and the economics i described aren't mine, my friend told me it was so cuz he uses the same blade for months.

I'm still partial to electric razors and a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a Braun foil head razor and it works better than anything else I have used up to now. The main thing with using electric razors is to keep on top of things. If you're one of those people that just let themselves go on the weekends, Monday morning is going to be a pain to get a good shave. If shaving is religious as brushing teeth, then you are in much better shape.

I generally use a mach 3 – I'm not all that happy with it but it gets the job done. I will definitely be trying out some of the suggestions posted here though.

I am currently bearded – it is much easier but you must remember that a beard takes maintenance! You need to trim it before heading out or you will look unkempt. That and it generally looks better if you shave your neck too (but that is purely optional).

To keep yourself smooth, the best way by far is to use a shaving powder. Magic shave powder is petty good, but there are a lot out there and are mostly all the same. Stick to the powders as the creams are not so good – they tend to be far weaker (creams are for women’s body hair – even ‘nair for men’ isn’t good enough). Plus, if you use nair, keep in mind that it has a bad smell that will get absorbed into your skin, so make sure you have 24 hours before a date to get rid of it – powders don’t tend to have this problem. Don’t pay close attention to the directions as far as how long to let it sit on your skin – some people are more sensitive than others. I need to leave it on a lot longer than directed, while others get a chemical burn fairly early. During a smooth period, I would do this about once a week – 4 days of hairless, 1 day of you can feel it but not see it, and 2 of full growth (resulting in the 2 day old scruffy look which some women really like).

I've gotten a lot of good comments about the way the beard looks (neatly trimmed remember - don’t go all scraggly) but I am thinking of going back to hairless. I've often thought about switching to a cycle of going bearded through the winter and smooth through the summer. I've had this since christmas, and it is time for a change.

Still, the beard option reall is your best bet, you will look rugged, manly, and of course, still have those extra ten minutes in bed, and seriously, you will probably look better than slean-shaven... I mean, really
