Okay, you must choose ten albums to place in a time capsule and those ten albums will be your Statement of Musical Appreciation for the future(Greatest Hits albums are cheating). Then I would have to cheat! I refuse to buy non-hits albums that are 95% dreck just to get the one or two good songs that I want. So I'd have only a couple that weren't Greatest Hits albums.

That said, I'd break up the endless ocean of various forms of rock that people are sure to suggest, with a pile of Classic Country Greatest Hits CDs, none of which I have bothered to memorize the names of. And a couple by Waylon Jennings that aren't "greatest hits" ones, but I can't remember wtf they're called offhand, either (and I can't be arsed to look at my computer's playlist right now).

Why? Why LG, why are you making me chose? There's so much the following generations would have to listen to...

Tough one, and by no means is this list complete:

Beethoven - Symphony No. 9
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
The Beatles - Blue Album
The Beatles - Red Album
Motörhead - 1916
Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
Hans Zimmer - Gladiator
Klaus Badelt - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Well, there ya go. "Slightly" biased, but hey :P

Why no greatest hits albums? Simple; For the challenge. :)

Anybody can pick ten good artists, but picking the ten most influential albums is a bit trickier, isn't it? :)

You listen to the wrong music then, if that's a problem for you.

Oh, you meant influential overall, or influential to myself?

*shrug* I couldn't separate my subjective opinion fom my objective one if I tried. So...um... both. :)

I picked those influential for me - which will, after all, become overall influential once that time capsule has been opened.

Oh, and I would appreciate those albums to be pressed as platinum records - for good measure!

*shrug* I couldn't separate my subjective opinion fom my objective one if I tried. So...um... both. :)

Well, if I must have a guess at overall influence in modern rock (late 60's onwards, beforehand ain't my area of expertise...)

The Beatles - Umm, tough call...white album?
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electricladyland
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power
Pink Floyd - ...probably Dark Side of the Moon
The Velvet Underground - The V.U. and Nico
The Doors - The Doors
The Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

...although there are a few glaring omissions (I picked up to the 80's, so no Metallica, Slayer, the Pixies, Nirvana, TOOL, etc.) and some could be substituted for other works in the same genres from the same period.

I picked those influential for me - which will, after all, become overall influential once that time capsule has been opened.

Oh, and I would appreciate those albums to be pressed as titanium records - for good measure!

*shrugs* a lot of mine are too obscure.

not as easy as it seems this one! Actually it pretty bloody hard!

I am glad thought that you did not ask why though! LOL

In no order -

Hawkwind - Space Ritual
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
AC/DC - High Voltage
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Frank Zapa - Lumpy Gravy
Butthole Surfers - Independent Worm Saloon
Skatalites - Ska Authentic Studio One*
Beatles - White Album
Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Lee 'Scratch' Perry - Super Ape

* the nature of Jamaican music/sound systems meant that many many great pieces of music never made it albums until much later and then as compliations. A great track like 'Guns of Navarone' or 'Eight by Eight' did not hit the albums until a good ten years after it was first published by Sir Coxones Studio One (he passed away 2 years ago...gutted).

Loony Goofers ... mate ... this is much much harder than I thought! I am sure I have forgotten some that could make it in my list...and I suspect if I did this in a years time my choice would be different...

Much respect to you, sir. :D

Thanks :)

This is one reason I did not include bands like Nirvana and such...also the Punk bands I love....the Surfers just tied it all together really nicely ...

Alchohol ;) LOL

Brilliant band live...only saw them once...

It was a struggle not to include Primal Scream though....

I never got to see them, they were a bit before my time... :(

But my favourite track by them is probably Goofy's Concern. :) Kuntz deserves a mention though. I couldn't stop laughing the first time I heard it. :D

2 questions:

1. Am I trying to give future generations the best of the past, or just convey what I, in particular, liked?

2. Is a greatest hits album cheating in the case of a classical composer (like Beethoven)? I wouldn't think so, because they didn't release albums when they were composing.

Kind of Blue -Miles Davis

The only reason Kind of Blue is important is becuase it brought Jazz to the mainstream; other than that, it's my least favorite Miles album.

My Albums are:
Miles Davis-On the Corner
Miles Davis-A Jazz Tribute to Jack Johnson
Herbie Hancock-Takin' Off
Herbie Hancock-Headhunters
Thelonious Monk-'Round Midnight
Thelonious Monk-Monkism
Charles Mingus-Migus Dynasty
Mahivishnu Orchestra-Birds of Fire
John Coltrane-Blue Train
Miles Davis-We Want Miles

And many, many more.
