Is it hard to get music licensed for use?

Because I just had a boss idea.

Might need to look at the record industry web sites. I'm sure there is a way (perfectly legal way that is).

Because I had some boss ideas for using it in my game. Rather than compose everything, license some, especially for iconic moments. I mean, movies do it, why not games?

It's easy. Just go to a stock music website, find a tune you want to use and pay for the license. If this is some specific, popular piece of music you're talking about, well - that'd make it a lot pricier, not to mention harder to swing.

I use lots of stock music in my everyday work (I just don't personally acquire it, so don't ask about URLs to the best stock music sites).

Several popular pieces

Yes, and expensive. There are exceptions and it depends on use. Parody is a wide umbrella to use.

It's suprisingly cheaper (not in that it is cheaper, but how much cheaper) to license covers.

Lower your sights, then - unless you're a rich bastard.

Well, so far, I only know of one piece I really want to use - Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King."

Check on sites like Jamendo.com for songs which allow commercial-use. Magnatune.com also makes it easy for you.

That will be a long way out of copyright by now, surely that will make a difference to any price?

Yeah, that's true. But I'll probably have to dish out lots to get modern songs.

There are probably public domain recordings of it out there. I've heard that one in a lot of PC games...

Yeah, but my usage is unique!

Nah, not really.

Archive.org has a big downloadable library of recordings in the public domain, that piece might be there.

I used to be in a cover band and it was pretty cheap for us to get a license to cover a song, but I remember it being quite expensive to get the license to use it by the original artist........

Look into music licensed under the Creative Commons http://creativecommons.org/ .

Also, you may have pieces you know in your head, but don't limit yourself to those, there may be some other music that works better and that you can use far cheaper.

And if you know a musician who wants to get his or her name out, maybe you can make a deal.
