Supernatural Abilities

What do you think about the existence and/or application of superhuman or otherwise unnatural abilities?

I myself have always thought that such abilities arguably exist, or at least, we dont know enough about the human brain to cancel them out. Alongside circus curiosities I have heard many stories in my travels and witnessed many strange things. I've also met more than a couple of people who attribute supernatural abilities to themselves- however most these people are generally calling deja vu "Seeing future events" (Though there was one time I was positive I'd heard an entire class lecture before-even in the teachers own accent).

What do you guys think? And what supernatural abilities would you like to possess?

Poll to come.

No ... deju vu means "already seen" as in, you experience something twice. Right?

I studied it slightly in Psychology, it's the feeling you have already experienced something you are currently experiencing. Sometimes you can trace it back to previous events...and sometimes there is no prerequisite.

I saw a preview for a new TV show about evolving supernatural abilities. There was one character who could make something happen just by painting a picture of it. Whatever he painted would happen the next day. I wish I had that power.

I think the idea of supernatural or psychic powers is cool. I tiny belief in that stuff is mostly the coolness factor of them actually existing.

Sounds familiar. The name was on the tip of my tongue.

Has it started showing yet? I got the impression from the preview that it was a new show.

Its in the fall lineup, NBC I think.

If I ever had a supernatural power, it would be the ability to move freely within this dimesion. Teleportation, dissolution, flying, hoering...all that great stuff.

And if not that: The ability to control Dark matter.

I'd take teleportation and the ability to render oneself undetectable.

Some neurological studies suggest deja vu is a kind of feedback reaction in the brain, caused by the fact that the conscious brain lags about a second behind the subconscious and can perceive an event and its freshly formed memory simultaneously.

if a thing exists, even if it is totaly nontangable, it is a thing that exists, and therefore, however unusual, in some sense 'natural'.

i absolutely do believe this is far more diverse then anyone realizes.

so what i don't believe in is the use of terms like "super-natural" which are intrinsicly, in and of themselves, self contradictory.

I have deja vu a lot, I don't know what causes it, but I am pretty sure something is wired improperly in my brain.

For example, when reading a book or article for the first time, I can predict word for word what happens next, I don't know that it's particularly useful, but it's rather annoying. It's possible that sometimes I am re-reading something I had read years ago and forgot about (and since I have a photographic memory it comes back word for word) but there are other times when it is a brand new book, that I couldn't have possibly read before.

I have dreams that are vague about disasters, and about 9 months to a year later something happens that would fit, but they are so vague that I can't count them. For example I had a dream about a bad storm, and massive flooding. 4 months later Hurricane Katrina happened. Could that be what my dream was? maybe, or it could have been that we were coming up on spring, and in Oklahoma there are tons of "bad storms with flooding" and my mind was thinking about those.

I don't know that I can say that there are no supernatural powers, because I don't know. I doubt that there are outside of God and co. though.

I do get "weird feelings" sometimes and my day is just uber weird, but I think I have figured out that I am just paying more attention those days to patterns, and stuff, so maybe all my days are weird, but mostly I am too tired to notice.

Bah, I predicted the Armavia Flight 967 crash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armavia_Flight_967) the day before it happened. More spookily, I only made that prediction as a joke after the train I was on had just lurched suddenly, which reminded me of when I had predicted a train crash when I was a kid. I just regard the whole thing as an unlikely coincidence.

Edit: rewording, that didn't make much sense

More spookily, I only made that prediction as a joke after some crazy woman on my train suggested I was psychic for predicting a train crash when I was a kid (the train we were on had just lurched suddenly, which is why I had mentioned that earlier prediction). I just regard the whole thing as an unlikely coincidence.
yeah, I make those kinds of guesses everyday, it's not like my dreams though, I have documentation of those. The latest one is quite scary, but whatever, they are never anything I can stop or prevent even if they weren't so vague.

No, nothing is super-natural. In order for something to exist, it must be a component of 'nature' (i.e. reality, or physics if you will). As such, nothing is supernatural. Things may seem supernatural to us, from the perspective of our relitavely shallow understanding of the nature of reality. However, all phenomena that occurs has an explanation of some sort, whether we understand it or not. If it happened, it is natural.

If a person can do something, it is not supernatural. Otherwise they couldn't do it. This is like claiming that a beaver dam is natural, but a human dam is artificial
