Did any of you happen to catch yesterday's episode of the Stephen Colbert Report? Did you see the part about how Indiana's the top terrorist threat? It was quite amusing, but seriously, what are your thoughts on the actual issue?

It's all in the formula used to determine how much homeland security funding a state gets. (Number of monuments + importance to the national economy + population per square mile) multiplied by 0) + whether or not your state votes Republican.

How exactly is Indiana the top terrorism threat (for those of us who didn't see the show)? Largest number of chemical plants or something?

How exactly is Indiana the top terrorism threat (for those of us who didn't see the show)? Largest number of chemical plants or something?I read an article on this a few weeks ago--it all came down to how well the people putting the reports together for the states pumped up the potential targets--there were things on the lists like county fairs and street corners. It was freaking ridiculous.

Well, obviously, no one is going to attack NYC.

Here's the article (http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/07/12/security.grants.ap/). Some snippets from it:
Instead, the department's database of vulnerable critical infrastructure and key resources included an insect zoo, a bourbon festival, a bean fest and a kangaroo conservation center. They represent examples of key assets identified in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, and Maryland....

The report noted that Indiana has 8,591 assets listed in the database -- more than any other state and 50 percent more than New York.

New York had 5,687 listed. It did not detail which ones, but the Homeland Security assessment of New York this year failed to include Times Square, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge or the Statue of Liberty as a national icon or monument.

Had enough of Republican government yet?

I've driven through the southern part of it a couple of times. Can't say I've actually visited. ;)

Absolutely not! I want Bush and the Congress to double the national debt before he leaves...at this rate, he's only increased it by 2.5 trillion! I want to see that debt at 11 trillion by the time he leaves office, or else I'll be pissed. I also want him to veto another stem-cell bill and ruin our economic competitiveness in biotech even further!

(The sooner this ass gets out of office, the better. He's starting to make Carter look good and Nixon halfway competent)

As to the bolded part, I'm not too sure Congress or the Administration can be blamed for whoever in New York forgot about the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Bldg., etc. However, it is of course up to Congress to rectify this kind of shoddy accounting and they should be held responsible if they fail to.

You're not missing out on anything.. a few good Amish buffets, a nice truckstop just north of Ft. Wayne with a good barbershop, but that's about it. :p

Ha! I hope people are smart enough to get the math. That's funny.

Double it? I want him to quadruple it. Then we can brag to the whole world that we have the biggest national debt. Think of the pride we'll have!

Maybe they're upset the Indianapolis Colts didn't win all of their games or that the Indiana Pacers laid a brick against the New Jersey Nets? Other than that, I'm lost.

It was the Daily Show, actually. Dan Bakkedahl did the segment.

I remember they did a story like this awhile back. They said that Homeland Security stated in their official documents that Manhattan had zero landmarks and/or monuments vulnerable to a terrorist attack. In their evaluation of the city they classified the Brooklyn Bridge as merely a "bridge", and the Empire State Building as a "tall office building". Meanwhile, in Indiana, they're putting rural petting zoos, skating rinks, and Amish popcorn museums on the terrorist watchlist.
