What Is Your Favorite Seventies Rock Band?

Simple, what is your favorite seventies rock band?

Gotta go with my boys Pink Floyd. I don't think I need to explain why.

Has a runner up, Deep Purple. They are so underrated, and are the greatest hard rock band in history. I love them so much. All of the members are incredible at what they do.

How do you define "seventies band?" Did they have to be a band in the seventies or just do their defining work during that period? Because if it's the earlier, then you could throw the Beatles in there as a seventies band--their defining work was done in the sixties, but they were still around in the early seventies.

I mean defining work. Most of those bands where around in the late sixties, but gained more notice in the seventies, with the exception of the Rolling Stones, who were popular in both eras. The Beatles I define as sixties, because Let It Be was the only album they had in the seventies, and their best work was in the sixties.

Clapton's best work was arguably from the 60's (Cream and Blind Faith), but there are four albums worth buying from the 70's of his:
Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs
Eric Clapton
461 Ocean Boulevard
Slowhand

Off of that list, the Clash, but I'd much rather have the Sex Pistols, The Damned, or Sham 69.

All of them were in the 70's too, you know! It's not all bad metal and boring prog! :)

I voted Clapton, but I love The Who, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Led Zep....and the Stones...and what about some of Bowie's stuff....although I guess he's not a group. Shutting up now.

Man, some good ones, but I had to pick The Clash.

But Aerosmith (even though it ain't up there) rocked. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, kicked ass. Lynyrd Skynyrd, good music to jam to. The Who (why isn't that up there either?)... List goes on. :D

I prefer Miles Davis's 2nd quintet(Late 60's) and the Electric Miles of the 70's to anything else.

Well, Rush were/are hardly boring. Then again, they're just one of the many Prog bands, and they're definitely the most prolific. :p

My favorite band of the seventies? It's gotta be the Sex Pistols. Sure, they only lasted from 1975 to 1978 (1972 to 1978, if you wanna get technical), but they made some incredible music in those few years.

Yeah, Sham 69 were good, too. Hersham Boys is lots of fun... It's one of those songs you find yourself putting on endless loop whenever you play it. :D

Pink Floyd! Duh! They're my favourite EVER!

... Yes is another band I really like though, and also Jethro Tull was a'ight and from the 70s. The Alan Parsons Project doesn't count since it's not a band.

You should listen to Rush. They're not psychedelic like Pink Floyd, but they have a lot of energy and some really great songwriters. Plus, the instrumentation is flawlessly executed, and the music is quite complex.

My dad was a huuuuuuge Rush fan back in the day, and I'd have to say I liked Rush on the fateful morning when I heard it on the car radio and I said, I like this, so he said he'd let me listen to his enormous collection of Rush CD's sometime.

Yes, the Rush albums made it from the cabinet to his CD wallet... to the hood of his pickup truck... and crushed on the pavement. :headbang:

Though I have the LP's upstairs, it's a little hard to get into that when you have to go through a pile of musty, mouldy records and then hook up a record player and go through a bunch of nonsense just to hear really damaged Rush albums.

Wow, that sucks. The CD's are dead, and the LP's aren't in much better shape... Crappy.

I have four of Rush's albums on vinyl: 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, and Moving Pictures, in Excellent+, Excellent, Near Mint (save for a deep scratch on side one), and Near Mint condition, respectively.

I could *ahem* give you my MSN address so I can *cough* send some "samples"... Though it'll have to wait until Tuesday, when I get my ADSL turned on.

You know, that would be really helpful. The whole reason the discussion started was because I'd asked for a difficult guitar solo to tackle and he'd said he would find the CD with a song called 'Working Man' on it (and then the damn thing had to roll out onto the road). fleurveela@hotmail.com

I'll be adding it after I post this.

"Working Man" has a pretty difficult solo, but overall, "Red Barchetta" is much more difficult to play (bends all over the place, weird time signatures, complex solo).

And "YYZ" is probably one of the most difficult songs ever. It's downright insane.

Well, that's what I need to do, then. I think it's so sad that the quality of guitarists has gone so far downhill since Hendrix, Clapton, Gilmour, Lifeson, et al.

in order from the top:

moody blues
jefferson airplane
jethro tull
zager and evans
tangarine dream
THEN yes (highest on my list of those that were mentioned)
vanila fudge
cream
iron butterfly
emerson, lake and palmer

(several on the list i would consider honorable mentions, but AFTER this list of mine)

of course it might be argued that my taste (tecnoambient electronica with a bit of fussion thrown in and maybe a side order of certain kinds of folk and parafolk) doesn't run exclusively to what might be termed mainstream popular music.
